Tales of Rebirth Battle Tutorial: The Basics

- NOTE: This tutorial is based on the PS2 version of Rebirth, so obviously the controls will differ if you're playing the PSP port. Here are the controls for the PSP version finally since I kinda forgot about updating this. Oops.
Directional Pad/Analog Stick: Used for movement and highlighting a selection
Circle Button: Used for executing a Normal attack and for making a decision
X Button: Used for executing a Skill and for canceling an item
Triangle Button: Displays the battle menu screen (also used to return to the battle screen)
Square Button: Used to defend and to change your RG level when used with the Directional Pad/Analog Stick
L Button: Used to change your battle strategy when used with the Directional Pad/Analog Stick
R Button: Used to change targets when used with the Directional Pad/Analog Stick
Start Button: Used to jump (like you'll ever need to, but...)
Select Button: Used to change your battle mode (e.g. auto, semi-auto, and manual)
And this is just a suggestion, but I would recommend switching the buttons for jumping and changing your battle strategy since I find it to be a heck of a lot more intuitive that way, but whatever works for you.
This tutorial is intended for new Rebirth players or those who feel that their understanding of basic battle concepts is lacking. In other words, this is not a guide on how to own every boss in the game (although it will help you stay alive); rather, I'm hoping that it'll lead to a better appreciation of how kickass the battle system is for this game.
A quick summary of what's in this video:
Basic Controls
General Explanations for RG, FG, Ougis, and guarding
A brief snippet on the Force Cube
Notice that I use a LOT of text, so the pause button is your friend (if there's more than 4 lines of text, you will most likely have to pause it since I did a crappy job of incorporating enough battle "downtime"...unless you're a damn fast reader). And just so no one thinks that the AI is retarded in this game, I programmed Eugene and Mao so that they would basically stand there; it gets confusing when there are many bodies running around. And to clarify, no, you're not supposed to have this awesome arsenal of Ougis the minute that you step outside of Sulz...I bought those from the Grade Shop.
If this video is well-received, I may do some more that explain stuff such as Enhancing your equipment, Cooking, Technical Smashes, and all of that other fun, non-essential but extremely helpful activities in the world of Rebirth. In other words, make lots of comments, rate this bugger, or do something to let me know that it helped (or if it didn't help, give me some suggestions) or I'm just going to assume that I wasted my time. Well, not really, but you know what I mean, right?
And yes, I'm still working on translating the storyline so put that baseball bat down RIGHT NOW! - Zábava
They really put a lot of thought into how this system worked. Just started playing the game recently and while I watched this video sometime in the past, I couldn't remember all the details.
I think they did a great job of balancing the battle system too, even though I admit it's initially a bit confusing.
I really appreciate this video, it's greatly improved the way I play the game even after having it for almost 3 years now. Having an understanding of how the system works helps to enjoy the game the way it was meant to be played; I really feel system wise this is the deepest Tales game.
Wow, thank you for putting this up! I just ordered the game, and had no idea how the battle system worked. Your explanations helped alot. Now I'll be ready for when I finally get to play it! :-)
Thank you SO much for this video! I recently ordered the PSP version from Play-Asia and it should be arriving this week (the wait is unbearable!!!) I plan to follow your awesome translation guide on Gamefaqs as well, but this video is really going to help me to learn what appears to be a very fun and involved battle system.
Many thanks again for this vid and the translation guide! Can't freaking wait to play this!
Wow, this is great work lanyn, thank you for going to the trouble of making this for potential Rebirth players
nice! lol I even learned a bit after playing rebirth for a year (with the cool effect at the end
...thank...you...
The battle system in this game is so bloody confusing. You, my friend, have made me a very happy man. Keep it up :)
Coo...er, great! It really is amazing how much attention was given to the battle system though. And that's my favoritest setup ever, seeing as I spam it very often in my videos. ^^
Thanks a lot for this video, I was getting quite confused by all the systems in this game but this video made it all much more clear. Now I'm off to save Claire with some fancy ougis!
Fantastic video. It was tremendously helpful.
That is exactly what I was aiming for, so yay!
Yeah, that was actually one of the complaints when Rebirth first came out; people in Japan thought the game was too hard. In any case though, glad the vid helped clear some things up for you. ^^
Thank you so much for this. I was so lost before this. thank you.
This is awesome. I have a translation of the story, but couldn't read the menu's. This helps immensely.
Thanks a lot for this; I now got a better understanding how the battle system works in this game. The downside is that only makes me want to play it more! I REALLY wish the PSP port of this game comes out over here, since I'm unable to import stuff at this time; here's hoping...
really helpful both videos and guides, thanks~
good video. i've learned all this from playing the game, and since i can't explain things well, i'll just have someone look at this video to learn how to play.
Thanks for the great videos!!!
Ha ha, well, it's good that you asked those questions earlier since it gave me an idea of what to include in the video. =)
Very helpful
Good, glad it helps. Hopefully future tutorial-ish videos will be more polished.
I think he's referring to that technique that Veigue can use for an infinite combo.
By the way this video very helpful...I think I'm going to start this game back up again tonight now ;)
Yay on this video!
Yeah, I know what you mean. It took me about 3 months to figure this stuff out, especially the Ougis. O_o
And jumping is more of a novelty thing since you will automatically do so when necessary. Sometimes I'll have to manually execute when playing as Tytree, but everyone else seems to have enough range with their normal attacks. But it's there if you need it.
Yeah, once my copy gets here, I gotta update the description. One of these days though, I'm actually gonna just redo the whole thing, but this will have to do for now. ^^
Thankees! And I'm trying to keep it up, trust me. ^^
No prob! ^^
helped me much
I wish I'd seen this when I first started playing. Since I can't read JP (basically the only symbols I can recognize are attack attributes/elements from playing ToDr), I had to learn by trial and error.
I didn't know you could jump, though. That's awesome. Now I just need to see if I can find some practical application for it. xD
Huh, I didn't do anything...it's not showing up in English for you?
And welcome! Glad this was useful. ^^
Ah, that's what tales2 does in his 999 solo combo against Milhaust, right? Hmm, assuming that I can figure it out, I'll include it in the next battle tutorial (which I'm currently piecing together in my head, so it's gonna be a minute before it's actually finished). Thanks for the clarification, Majutsukou!
how do you change between auto, semi-auto and manual
@Senelfangirl111
Double tap the control pad in the direction you want to run. That's how it is for the PS2 version.
Omg, I'mma have to buy this game now whne it's out for PSP.
Yeah, kind of wish we had a solid release date at this point, but at least we know it's coming, right?
Thanks man. I handled it OK in Japanese until I got to the OUGI part, that was a bit tricky. Much obliged!!
How can you get the other characters to do nothing but defend? Is there a way to set them to manual like in other Tales games?
I set my Ougi to forward and X, then I get my RG up to max, but my FG will not turn pink in the foward X slot, so I have not been away to get an Ougi to work. What am I doing wrong?
Third time watching these vids now... I just can't seem to get a handle on this damn battle system. Nor can I pull off the Lower one's rg > lower cost rg Ougi combo either...
Do you know if this game will have a NA release for the PSP version? I kinda doubt it but i keep hearing rumors about it on other forums XP
u know the psp version while they r walking without battleing how do I change it?
So far, no news on an English release and to be honest, it's not looking promising. Namco has already announced that Vesperia and ToS: Knights of Ratatosk will be localized, yet Rebirth is coming out before either of those two games...well, there's always a chance. ^^
*puts down the baseball bat* :P
lol it is more complicated than the other tales series. a heck of a lot of things going on thats off tangent with the usual tales formula.
I'm not quite sure if I know what you're describing...could you maybe be more specific or give me some sort of context?
See, I have my reasons for being paranoid, people!! =P
Me: *buys a Japanese PS2 so I can play the Japanese PS2 games my mom bought all the way back when I was in middle school*
Me: This'll be easy, I've already played two games in Japanese (Tales of the World Radiant Mythology 2 and Madoka Magica Portable) all I need is to use my phone to translate it!
Me: *finds a guide that translates the battle mechanics* Wow this is helpf--
The guide: Rebirth happens to utilize one of the
most complex, integrated battle systems known to geekdom.
Me: ....
Me: ....
Me: Well fudge....
Me: Oh well it can't be _THAT_ bad.
Also me: *takes several minutes to figure out how to move into the different battle rows*
Me: Okay maybe it's a little annoying....
*Time skip to after the second fight with the dark wings when the force cube rotation function is unlocked*
Me: *visible confusion* WHAT THE HELL IS THIS?!
*Remembers how infamous Annie is for being pretty much completely useless when controlled by the Ai and how her play style is kind of complicated and difficult to understand especially if you can't read Japanese*
Me: *sobbing in the background*
Yeah, I went in completely blind too. I didn't even know you could flip the cube until my second playthrough and I did it by accident, lol

I might as well have not found out lol. I'm bad enough at neglecting those kinds of features (or at the very least not using it to the full potential because I can't be bothered to learn how to best tailor it to fit a certain character) in games where I can actually understand the language...so in a game where I can't even read the thing I might get a little bit done but by the end of the day I'd probably be more "oh look at the big numbers that'll be good!" than actually doing anything productive lol.
Is it actually that bad? No, I can probably manage. Is it annoying? Yes. Yes it is.
