Thanks for sharing this wonderful video! I recently took the train from Surat Thani to Bangkok, but the first-class cabin was not quite as nice as yours. Thanks for making this video, and wishing you many more wonderful journeys! 👍🏼

Great video, Kevin! I absolutely would take that overnight train as an alternative to flying. Thanks for sharing it with us and for all the tips. Too bad you didn't sleep well. I once took an overnight train between Moscow and St. Petersburg and it was one of the best sleeps I've ever had. I was worried I wouldn't be able to sleep since I have difficulty sleeping on planes, but I guess the motion of the train rocked me to sleep. Cheers!

14:22 Yo, Kev, I think the reason why sleeping on most trains are not comfortable as a ship is due to the bunk orientation. The fore and aft layout became the custom in the US and British Navies for practical as well as health reasons, and over time, it became standard practice. So, you and I, as veterans, are used that. But, from what I believe, the brain best assimilates (even subconsciously) when the body is positioned parallel to the motion of your travel vector. Civies experience this too when driving long distances. Easy to sleep in a reclined passenger seat ...drooling all the way. LOL

I took this ride in 1976. We paid extra for the air conditioned first class cabins. About an hour into the trip, there was a pop and a flash at the electric breaker box in the first class car and the power went out for the remainder of the trip. We spent the evening taking turns hanging our heads out the door window at the end of the car because that was the only window that could be opened. And spent the cool night sweltering in the bunk in the sealed, unventilated first class cabin.

Thanks for the video! I have a house in Chiangmai and have taken the train 12-15 times over the last 25 years, as I go between the U.S. and Thailand. I carry 2 suitcases and a carryon, so it’s cheaper to take a train than fly. I’ll be coming back to Thailand in September and may try to get a sleeper car instead of a second class air conditioned seat if they still offer a discount. I’ve never been able to sleep on a train, even after flying for 24 hours from the U. S., which makes it difficult to stay awake that first day, since the train arrives in the morning.
I’ll bet the train never made up that 2 hour delay. One time, the train that I was on broke down on the way to Chiangmai, about halfway. After an hour, it was decided to have the passengers disembark. There were enough vehicles contacted locally to take us to Chiangmai for slightly over the cost of the train ticket. At Chiangmai, I was able to get a full refund of my original ticket at the train station.

    • @30AndAWakeUp

I’ve taken the train between Bangkok and Chiang Mai many times over the last 20 years. I have a house in Chiangmai but had to move back to my hometown Kansas City while my 3 step children and my infant son went to school through high school. I’ve got 3 more years left. I do come back once a year. I usually take the second class sleeper in an older train because they have places to stack your luggage and I have two large suitcases and a carry on from flying over. Sometimes I fly but still go by the train station to ship the luggage so I can take Thai Air Asia and not pay for luggage. One time, I took the train and it broke down halfway going to Chiangmai. It must happen often enough that people with SUV’s showed up to take us for slightly more than I had paid for my ticket. Once we got to Chiangmai, I got a refund for my ticket.

Very interesting, thanks for sharing. Being a passenger train buff myself, let me add my two cents. First, it’s a bummer that the dining car was not open, that’s usually a great experience and one of the things that makes traveling by train so unique and pleasant. Your comment about the night’s sleep not being as good may have to do with the bed being perpendicular to the direction of travel. I noticed that the beds in the second class cabins were lined up in the direction of travel and may have been more conducive to good sleep. Lastly, it’s surprising that a first class cabin would not have its own bathroom, making it awkward to have to walk out of the room in the middle of the night. But hey, the price was right…:)

I’m trying to expand my forms of traveling to include trains. 🤣🤣. It’s probably a bad time to start here in the U.S. bc trains may be packed due to price of gas. These are the new China made rail cars introduced in 2016. I think the new trains are #9 and #10. Avoid the old sleeper cars scheduled at other times of night.

I don’t know why, but all long distance trains through That part of the world are freezing. We did the KL to SIN trip about 10 years ago and our journey was soooo cold.

I bought mine a few days earlier but there were only 2 first class cabins being used and I think there is around 20. However that could change as people start to travel more.

They usually have a dining car but it's been closed due to Covid. So you need to bring your own food as of now.
