- I get a lot of questions about traveling full time, whether it's in an RV or van or internationally. It's a hard questions to answer because each person's needs and financial situation are different. What I will say is you can always go try it out short term. I say this kind of tongue & cheek but you can always go back to your crappy life if it doesn't work out.

Tim Ferriss' book gave me the same great advice when I first started in 2008. I asked myself, how long it would take to get back to my old shitty life if things didn't work out. Fast forward 14 years, i'm glad I made the move.
Yeah, Tim's book is great. It's amazing to me, how long people will forgo the life they want, to stay in a life they hate because it's "comfortable"

Hi Kevin. I took a leap of faith back in 2018 and moved to Thailand for the year with my wife and son and it was the best thing we ever did. We had to put all of the contents of our home into storage, organise multi-entry visas, and sort out online learning for our 11-year-old son. but we did it.
I worked as an illustrator from the co working spaces in Chiang Mai and my wife taught English online to Chinese students. We had no idea if this experiment would work but it did in spades. We returned to our lives in Australia in 2019 with only the fondest memories of our time away. And to think if we'd hesitated two more years we would have missed out going because of the pandemic. As for your advice, I agree. Be organised, go with some savings locked away, but ultimately take that leap of faith and go. Thailand is the perfect soft landing for this sort of life change or experience.

I've been nomading for 7 yrs mostly via house sitting while teaching online.
I say the same thing. "What's the worst that can happen? You have to go back?" OK but you did it and you have those experiences. I've lost too many people in my life way too early who had "plans". "We plan;God laughs". "Trust Your journey" and all those sayings.

Great video, Kevin! I get that question about costs as well and agree it's a difficult one to answer because we all have our differences with how we like to spend our money. I retired a couple years ago and have been doing periodic 3-4 week trips to various places around the world (currently in Argentine Patagonia) and loving it. But I'm inspired by you and others who have become long-term travelers because it's definitely the direction I want to go. Thanks for the inspiration and keep the great videos coming! Cheers!

Again good content, it's funny I left Ireland in march last year and headed to Thailand but decided to leave at the end of May due to the lockdown and headed to Florida for a couple of months. Then in August I hit Belgrade which is a great city full of good food and nightlife. I'm now in the UK and planning to enjoy the next 6 months and back to Thailand for at least 6 months. Yes I changed my business to a remote style. I'm 54 years old single and I struggle with the state of western values. Thanks Sean.

Great video. I am doing the small corrections technique. I recently took the step of going to part time work. I will slowly reduce my hours until I retire fully.
People fear change. But I believe taking baby steps can help you overcome the fear.
That's a great idea and great advice for how to ease into it.
It is difficult to answer, take the military for example as you know you can have 2 E5's say both married 1 kid same age neither wife works one always asking for a few dollars one lives very nicely make the same exact pay. All depends on your lifestyle. My Appalachian hike coming up I don't want to share a room or stay in a hostel in an open room I will accept more cost to have a single room. Kevin. First, we do like the walk-and-talk style videos. Second, we agree that there are too many variables to life to have a set price. Plus their are thousands of budget videos on YT to find one similar to your personal lifestyle to use as a reference. You have a knack for uploading during morning coffee. Everyone should take a gap year. Even my accountant agreed when I met to discuss taxes. No one is promised tomorrow, make it happen. Yeah, being able to walk out of your apartment and get fresh greens and fruits for very reasonable prices is one of the pluses of living in SE Asia. Thanks for pointing this market out. I have walked all around the old city, but this market I never spotted.
There are a few little side street markets like that one in the old city. Kinda cool.
LOL...love it..."crappy life"! We certainly all have aspects of our life that for many would be "crappy." But really not being able to leave and go too far, especially with various lockdowns, I have been pleasantly surprised by all the varied adventures, and some pretty cool ones, that can be found right here in my own backyard and further through the province. Guess it really is a mind-set. But certainly do hope to get back to Thailand, and other international travel one day! Take care now...Bruce and Otis

Good stuff! Totally agree on how much it costs to do this life. I've done long term travel in my 20s, 30s, and 40s, and what I've found is that my values and priorities have changed over the years. I was fine with $4 hostels as a 20-something. During my 30s, I still enjoyed the hostel culture and the ability to meet/spend time with other travelers, so I still frequently stayed there, but in a single room. As a traveler in my 40s, I find the privacy of AirBnBs or hotels to be higher on my list of priorities. Clearly, my costs have escalated over the years, and I suspect that this is true for most. So I'd encourage people to get out there sooner rather than later - it's only going to get more expensive! The other thing I've done over the years to accommodate this lifestyle creep is switch up where I go - most of my 20s travel was in Europe. I did a lot of Central and South America in my 30s, and have spent much of my 40s travel in Southeast Asia. So even though my travel budget (roughly $50/day) is the same now as it was back in my 20s, I've been able to increase my standard of travel.

I did it left a shit city and a crappy job in Seattle back in 1995, no more crack city I'm out of here. Went to Kuala Lumpur Malaysia became a professional photojournalist , 25 years later living the life, million dollar condo paid for living life large and correct! Its my turn and I want the extra cheese ! Great affordable health care , the works BKK is only 2 hrs away Phuket 1 hr etc. Singapore 45mins I got the works. I made the nestea plunge bro.

Hey Kevin. Been watching since you started the RV vids...now watching the amazing Thailand ones. My question concerns the tap water in Thailand. I know not to drink any tap water, or even use ice. So does that mean I can't have a Thai iced tea (or any other non-alcoholic drink) rom a restaurant or a street vendor? Thanks!
I have never had an issue with ice. I think they make it with purified water. Water is soooo cheap here compared the other places.

I worked back words, added all my known expenses added expected new ones added a fudge factor of 10 to 15 % looked at the budget and live below the budget each month to keep and build reserves.
That's how you do it for sure.
Few have the privilege to do what you and some other free souls do. Many want to break away from their daily grind, but cannot, for various reasons. As simple as it sounds to travel without worry, for many it'll be a dream.
I've seen so many people with so many situations out here doing this. Anyone can do it, they just have to come up with a plan and make it work. But I do understand that many don't actually want to do it, they are happy, they just want to live vicariously through others.

I've been lucky enough to have an employer in the states that alots 6 weeks holiday pay. I've done 2 weeks here in a country, 2 weeks there and 2 weeks there every year. I love it. When I hit 59.5 years of age, ill take my savings and retire with it along with the company pension. Ill do 6 months out of the US and 6 months in. There's been a lot of negative news about the US these past few years. It has its issues but I still love it enough to not want to sell my home and never return but I'm truly looking forward to spending have the year in Thailand when the time comes 👍

Currently in California where I grew up but I'm feeling like I'm ready to venture out. Life is getting too expensive here especially for those of us with the crappy jobs and Asia makes sense as far as getting more bang for your buck. I'm almost 40, have a bachelor's degree, and no serious debt.
I've had my eyes on Thailand, Vietnam, Cambodia, South Korea, and Taiwan.
Out of these countries which one would you recommend for someone that wants to find a place to possibly live long term?
I don't mind getting a TEFL and teaching English for a while until I can figure out something else. Vietnam seems strict when it comes to extended stays, and Cambodia has less opportunities.
Its worth mentioning, ideally a place where Americans are welcomed. I know we can't speak for everyone but in a general sense. I actually don't drink or party and I have no issue learning local customs and I'm open to learning a new language too to help myself acclimatize.
I actually volunteered in Thailand in 2006 for half a year. I enjoyed my time there but definitely at the time it was hard to use English once I left the tourist areas. I'm sure much has changed since then.

So I have only lived in Thailand, so I cant really speak to the long term livability of the other 4 countries you mentioned. The biggest consideration though, is visa requirements. I purchased a long term visa to Thailand, but there are other ways. So that would be my advice, research visa requirements on all of them and figure out which fits you better.

I came across one of your comments actually in another video saying how people tend to dispute you on the notion of surviving off of 1k USD in Bangkok. If I remember correctly, you made that comment last year. Would you say that's still possible today? Mind you, I'm fine with an apartment in the $200-$300 range and I would eat only Thai food solely off the streets and markets because that's what I'm into anyway.

Until pandemic travel restrictions are fully lifted the only international trips I have taken have been from Thailand to USA and back. Many have no choice but to go back to their "crappy lives". I am luck because I have lived in Thailand for years on a Retirement Visa(Non OA). Thailand and especially Chiang Mai is the best combination of cost, things to do, medical and amenities. The only thing missing in Chiang Mai is a beach. Not really a big negative.

@@oceanlover3530 NON OA is a retirement that can only be obtained at a Thai Embassy or Consulate. Similar to a NON O Retirement Ext of Stay that can be obtained at Immigration in Thailand.

Can just break things up into 3 budget categories (eg monthly spend of 2k, 4k n 6k) to deal with such questions ..
You find that retirement is an addictive bug that may make people not mind spending less just to stretch the budget n be perpetually retired;, especially when they break away from the rat race n realized that we don't need many things to live holistically, simply n happily ..

I’ll definitely buy a pad in a location I like if I intend to stay there for 20 years as paying 7% rental yield annually would have allowed me to buy up the place in 10 years.
At the end of a 20 or 30 year stay, I would be able to sell the property for a least 70% of its value if it’s a landed house as land prices will go up n doing so means I will end up almost staying there for FREE ..
Having my own place will improve my quality of life as I can spice it up to my liking n add stuff that makes life comfortable like a bigger fridge n TV n having an EV in the garage etc..
Life will be really carefree as I will not need to worry about rental contracts n having to be constantly on the move n the Cost of Living will be really cheap if you take away the rent as Thailand have no property tax ..
The downside is that you have to really recce n stay for a while to make sure you like the place n to bargain hard before buying as Thai property is notoriously hard to sell after you buy …
