    This is one of the most brilliant leading lady entrances in a film. Old Rose ( Gloria Stuart ) had been already been introduced, but James Cameron made it clear with Kate Winslet's entrance that it was young Rose who was the real leading lady. This movie was so successful because it hearkened back to the film making of the great masterpieces of the past, like Gone With The Wind.

    It’s so weird, that we’ve already met Rose, and we’ve already seen her younger from the flashback she had of the drawing, yet it’s still so exciting when we see her come out of that car. The first time we see the life she lived. Almost chilling. But it’s sad to think about how beautiful and happy everything was in this moment, but then think back to the people sinking and freezing in the pitch black ocean only a few days later.

      I noticed that too. Someone else noted Rose's outfits are tight and restricted in the beginning of the movie, and get more loose and comfortable as she falls in love with Jack later on. I think the hat isn't just done for impact but also to feed into that. She is wearing all white, tight fitting clothes she can't move in, and she is wearing a hat that blocks her vision of the ship she is about to board, she has to stretch her neck to see it. And she's not invested in the ship or how beautiful it looks. Later, in the scene where she is looking out over the ocean, her hair is free flowing and her vision unrestricted, she can really see it all

The rivets easily popped out when Titanic hit the iceberg and the bulkheads did not stand head to toe as they only went as high as E deck allowing the water to spill from one compartment to the next and vice versa causing the ship to sink.

    I love how this scene immediately sets up the relationships between characters. Rose, beautiful and elegant but serious and not at all joyful, quite depressed and not too taken with Cal. Cal himself, full of joy and excitement with this adventure, eager to get Rose to agree with him. Rose's mum, who laughs at Cal's comment but doesn't sound genuine with her laugh - she's strained and trying so hard to make small talk and keep up appareances, but she's strained too and probably annoyed at how blasé Rose is being

    Everything about this scene was so great. The gloved hand, immediately showing it’s someone important, the large brimmed hat, putting the time period in place, and then the camera panning to rose’s face, revealed from under the hat as she looks up, starting from the lips, then landing at her eyes on Titanic. Classic beauty, classic filmmaking.

      Jean Yang its not 'unsinkable'. Thomas andrews (the designer of titanic) said the ship can stay afloat if 4 compartments have been flooded. J. Bruce Ismay is the one said that titanic is 'Unsinkable'. So alot of people really believed that its 'Unsinkable'. So, when the ship sank, alot of people got mad/angry at him. Because the 'Unsinkable' ship sank with their love ones.
      Im telling you people, its just a prediction. Your not sure if a ship is unsinkable. Its just in YOUR OPINION. If someone said it is a 'unsinkable' ship. Dont believe it. Its just a *PREDICTION*

    Interesting thing is that no one ever said the ship was unsinkable or advertised it as such. True, the mechanisms it had would have concluded that it was unsinkable but only because such a disaster (like scrapping an iceberg) was unheard of and very unlikely. A head-on collision by Titanic or one from another ship to Titanic would probably breach 3 compartments at most so the ship could remain afloat (earlier ships would likely sink or capsize).

    • @Minillus
      @Minillus Před 10 měsíci

      Pretty much this. The Titanic and her sisters were made to survive a collision with another ship.
      But not an Iceberg. And even then, most people theorize the Titanic could've survived a head-on impact with the iceberg (even though I'm not sure if it could. I'd like to hear people with knowledge on the subject talk about this)

    For those of you who dont know. The Mauretania was designed to be the fastest passenger liner owned and operated by Cunard (Which still exists today and is the comapany that owned The Carpathia, The ship that rescued Titanic's survivors) She was slightly smaller than Titanic but was designed for speed. She operated from 1906 to 1935 when she was scrapped.

      There is photo auf Olympic (Titanic's elder and equally long, but a bit ligher sister) and Mauretania mooring behind each other before being scrapped. They look pretty similiar in size. Particulary if you are not much into naval architecture, the Olympic class does not appear like a huge jump. (Though the Olympic class was around 30% heavier than Mauretania).
      Considering the size difference between Olympic and Titanic was rather small, Titanic was only deemed larger, because she was heavier, and HAPAG in Germany was working hard on the Imperator class already, I just do not get, what should be so special about Titanic in particular. That the newer sister ships are a bit heavier is pretty usual.
