Actually, this is the 1940s version. But it fits the foreshadowing part very well. The original lyrics that would have likely been sung on the Titanic are as follows: Eternal Father, strong to save, Whose arm hath bound the restless wave, Who bidd'st the mighty ocean deep Its own appointed limits keep; Oh, hear us when we cry to Thee, For those in peril on the sea! O Christ! Whose voice the waters heard And hushed their raging at Thy word, Who walkedst on the foaming deep, And calm amidst its rage didst sleep; Oh, hear us when we cry to Thee, For those in peril on the sea! Fun fact about that piano, it had previously been on Titanic's sister, the Olympic. I'm sure some of you have seen the photograph of the two ships docked next to each other. That was the moment when the piano was moved off of the Olympic and onto the Titanic. When Titanic sank, the piano was never recovered and is presumably destroyed. Olympic's piano was replaced in the 1913 refit and that piano still exists today.
First, second and third class passengers were allowed to mingle during church service, which on Sunday was held inside the first class dining room. It's inaccurate that Jack would be kicked out because all were welcome for church service. At the time it was probably seen as quite "woke"... but it was their attempt at the idea of "we're all equal before God".
Interesting though why Cameron made that artistic choice indeed. It was strange anyway for Jack, like that he felt he could just *barge* in during a service to talk to Rose. You know, that he could *not* wait until it was over etc. Either way, Cameron probably included the Sunday Prayer in the movie, because, of the line of: _"for those who peril on the sea"_ which was an omen for what we knew as an audience was to come of course later with the sinking. Then, including Jack getting blocked from meeting Rose further, because, there had to be a motive for Jack and Rose to be separated.
From what I understand Captain Smith held service for the first class passengers only. The other classes there were other priests who were second class passengers and held service for second and third class passengers.
It's a very nice sentiment, but there are no primary sources that confirm this. First and Second Class had their own separate services in their own separate dining saloons; there's little to no record of how services were held for Third Class. Quarantine protocol alone would've forbid Third Class passengers from mingling with anyone else.
No. The classes had church services held separately. The Captain held the service for first class in the first class dinning saloon. In 2nd class it was held by either stewards or passengers or anyone religious in second class. Third class was less of a deal because there were so many people from different countries that many had their own religious beliefs that there was no service held or organized by any crew members but some third class passengers made there own makeshift services in rooms such as the general room or open space.
Wherever, Lord our brethren go, Protect them by Thy guarding hand From every peril on the land. O Spirit, whom the Father sent To spread abroad the firmament.
