  • A walkaround and some comparisons to my previous 2020 Harley Street Glide. I forgot to mention the heated grips on my Harley were much better than the heated grips on the Honda. The Honda on max is only about mid heat level on the Harley. I never used my Harley grips above 3 (halfway) so I should be fine.

    It's amazing how many H-D riders love their Goldwings. I absolutely love having reverse on my 2014 GW ...it has certainly helped me get out of some precarious parking situations...like loose gravel on an incline.

    Great job on the walk around! I took one for a ride at Daytona bike week this year and have decided to go with the same color you chose. I have been riding my Honda Valkyrie Interstate for over twenty years and love it and it draws a lot of attention wherever I go but it is getting harder and harder to get parts for these bikes and I think I will make the move to the wing by the end of the year. Once again great job on the walk around😎

    Enjoyed the video. I used to work at a HD dealer ship. After what I learned and witnessed, I could never go back to HD. Doug, you sound like you are an accomplished mechanic. To that end the cost to change the drive belt or chain on a GW is ZERO, on the HD is over $1,000 since part of the motor has to come apart. The drive belt can get damaged so easy if a foreign object gets caught up in there. Once a customer came in with a HD trike. He has previously had a bunch of service and preventive maintenance done. His bill was like $4K!!! Three weeks after that service, a rock some how got caught up in the back and was lodged tight. It ruined his new drive belt. Another $2K thank you very much! Yep, I like my GW and not sad the HD is someone else's set of fun!

    • @Doug_Morgan
      @Doug_Morgan  Před 2 lety

      I have always had a love hate relationship with my Harleys. I have never had drive belt issues but I know what needs to be done to change one. The Harleys I have owned really do have their good points, but also have some real bad ones. I really do love the simplicity of working in an air cooled engine. I hate the fact the swing arm is connected to the engine and then the whole thing is rubber mounted. On both the Dynas and Baggers I have had it causes handling issues when you start to push them. Some of the stuff on the Goldwing makes you shake your head though, especially the access to the air filter. That and I hate pulling apart all the plastic panels that feel like they are going to break and will if you don’t do it correctly. Everything seems to be a bit of give and take. As for the other, yes I do most of my own work. My first engine rebuild was in my teens back in the 70’s after I blew my engine racing someone.

    I have a 2020 GW and a 21 Road Glide. Both bikes have a unique feel. My wife and I like to ride long distance. Here is how I make the comparison. We just got back from the Blue Ridge parkway taking the autotrain with the Harley to Washington DC and riding back home to Fort Lauderdale. The Harley is like riding a convertible sports car. Its fun and more of a moto "experience". The Honda gets you there from point a to point b without issues, and is easy to ride with no issues. But at the end of the day you don't get off the bike and say wow that was fun. Maybe it's the DCT which makes things effortless where the Harley you have to participate in the ride, controlling the bike. I actually enjoy the Honda when we take short runs to dinner or drinks or head to the Keys. The GW is like riding a sport bike in an out of traffic. It accelerates faster, weaves better in and out of traffic and that makes it fun. I occasionally use the reverse gear and me and the wife laugh, but it is handy sometimes. The navigation on the Honda is worthless and we just use the apple play anyway. The Harley nav isn't too bad, but with car play it's just a back up when out of cell service.

    • @Doug_Morgan
      @Doug_Morgan  Před 2 lety

      I would have to test a DCT for a while before I would ever buy one. To me having a clutch is part of riding a bike, the same as it is driving a sports car. Today's generations like paddle shift ,but for me it will always be a stick and clutch. My Harley touring bikes were mile munchers and the 42k I had on my last one in two years shows that. I am loving this Honda so far and have no regrets. It will never have the personality of a Harley however. I would never bad mouth either one of them.

    Can't explain it, I'm 5'6" and I find this bike cramped, I had a goldwing f6b, that was ok, seat height has changed, they also widened it, bars are back to far, ended up on a kawasaki vaquero, which I think is less bike but more comfortable , footboard put my knee slightly bent forward other than a 90 degree angle, helps after knee surgery, for me, nice review, enjoyed it

    I bought a new Goldwing in 2008 and had it about 10 years. In that time, I had a love hate relationship with it. The good? Power, reverse, performance and it handled VERY well. The bad? Lots of cheap plastic, horrible stereo, uncomfortable and few upgrade options.
    So, It came time for me to buy another bike, I checked out the new 2022 Goldwings and saw the exact same problems from my last Goldwing. Considering the bike is approximately $33k or so, there was no way I would have purchased another. Seriously, they need to beef up the plastic because it scratches easily (dealer told me it was an issue on new Goldwings), put a 400 watt stereo in it MINIMUM with better speakers and put on a plush seat for both rider and passenger. The recent "update" to the speakers and bag space was a good start, but seriously, for a $33k bike, some of this should be obvious.

    • @Doug_Morgan
      @Doug_Morgan  Před 2 lety

      I agree with what you say, I don't need the high power stereo though as I only listen to it through my headset. Much better sound without having to have it blasting away to overcome wind noise on the highway. They really need to improve radio reception though. It sucks.....

    Just found your channel and outstanding video! I own a '21 Street Bob that I love and plan to keep, and have been on the fence between adding a new GW or '22 Road King Special. Have test-ridden both, and my brain pulls me toward the GW, but my heart toward the RKS. The GW handled so effortlessly, but I found it the steering to feel weird (I know now that must've been the uniqueness of the front suspension). The GW's tech is incredible, but overwhelming...almost "too much," and I love the bare bones of the RKS. But your comparison of all the elements between your SG and your GW have me reconsidering. I subscribed, btw, and look forward to following your GW journey.

    • @Doug_Morgan
      @Doug_Morgan  Před 2 lety

      Yes there is a huge difference between the RK and the Wing. The RK is pretty much a bare bones ride in the way of tech. Nothing wrong with that, sometimes the simplicity of that makes the ride more enjoyable. It all depends on the person and the riding they do. That is why I have always been a firm believer of "ride your own ride" and do whatever make you happy. I will never get people that will go online and hate of people for what they may or may not ride. If they are on 2 wheels and having fun then all the power to them. If you are really drawn the the RK you could always get a handlebar GPS (I have one on my Bonneville) and a helmet com unit which will give you radio and bluetooth music from your phone. Good luck with whichever you buy.

    I've had HD full dressers and GW's, 6th and 7th gen. They are different bikes despite being heavyweight tourers. For long distance comfort the GW is very good. The HD was fun but just didn't have the competence in handling, comfort, maintenance ease, etc. Sold the HD's; still have the Wings. Also had BMW and Yamaha's big bikes. Again overall the GW is still my favorite although the older Yam Venture's, the 83-93 years, were darn good bikes too. Back then much better than the GW's were. Never a fan of the BMW's, they were just ok for me. Too $$$ for what you got. The tech on the new tourers is too much for me personally. Key fobs? Electric opening hatches and bags? More to go wrong for what value? Been riding since 1973 so I've seen massive improvements, but some of this is complexity for what gain? Ride safe and enjoy, whatever you like!

    How smooth is the manual and how far off the bar does the clutch engage? I rode the DCT and was not impressed - especially at slow speeds. I like to be able to do relatively tight U-turns - hence the interest in the manual. Thank you, sir. Respectfully,

    • @Doug_Morgan

      The shift from 1st to 2nd on mine is a bit clunky but not bad. The rest are silky smooth. The levers are adjustable for distance. This one engages closer to the bars than other hydraulic clutches I have had but not as close as a manual clutch if that makes sense. I have zero problems feathering the clutch in tight maneuvers. Some of my previous bikes with hydraulic clutches like the FJR did not feather well. They were like an on off switch to me.

      @@roberthaven8094 If you are that tall you will be really cramped on the FJR. It is much faster and is more towards sport than touring. Riding with a passenger will not be that comfortable. The Wing is much more comfortable especially with a passenger. You will probably want to put highway pegs on it so you can stretch your legs from time to time. I am 6' and have a set but only use them on long trips once in a while. Everyone is different. The FJR will run away from the Wing and out handle it all day long. The Wing is no slouch though and is very sporty for its size. BTW I hated the clutch on the FJR It doesn't engage until the last 1/2 of travel and is like an on off switch. I never found a windshield I was happy with on the FJR. Something about it causes a lot of buffeting around your head. The stock shield on the wing is great in my opinion. Bob I think you may be OK as the Goldwing has a fairly low seat height. If you can find one at a dealer get them to let you sit on one. One of the CZcamsrs I follow (Missenden Flyer) has one and he is around 5'7" as well.

      @@Doug_Morgan I follow the Missenden Flyer as well…… great channel and videos! I didn’t realize he is only 5’7” also. I believe he just traded in his 2019 Goldwing for a brand new 2022 model in dark blue. The seat height of the Goldwing isn’t my biggest concern. It’s the sure size and weight that I may have difficulty in maneuvering around in city traffic or in tight situations. There is a local Honda dealer here in Taipei where I currently reside. They allow test rides of the Goldwing but I feel I lack the confidence to handle such a big touring bike, plus they are super expensive here. They sell for nearly twice the price you’d pay in Europe or America because of the import taxes. Many have said it looks much bigger and intimidating than it really is.
