  • Hey everyone, as you saw in the new Porsche Taycan Cross Turismo First Wash Video on the AMMONYC channel, the gentlemen at Exoshield helped install protection film on the windshield. With the rising cost of cars, repairs, and parts, I wanted to protect the new TCT for daily driving duty in Northeast driving conditions (looking at you sodium chloride). Enjoy a thorough walk-through of the installation process as well as the difference compared to traditional paint protection film. Big thank you to the guys at Exoshield for protecting my first brand new Porsche. Enjoy! - L

    I work along side a glass business, and I can ensure you that this would be worth the investment. New cars have to have the cameras on the windshield calibrated , after a windshield is replaced. It's super expensive, this is probably alot cheaper, especially if your insurance doesn't cover everything

    Didn’t know this was even possible. I can see some clear (no pun intended) benefits for some windshield shapes that are more prone to rock chips and cracks.
    I had a 3rd gen MR-2 years ago where even the smallest rock was guaranteed to cause a chip in the windscreen. Needed repairs every 1 to 2 months and a new windshield every 18 months on average. This would have been great.

      Pretty sure it’s a new product. I first saw this product on a video a few months ago from Chicago Auto Pros on a Tesla. On those cars with a windshield that’s half the roof, which I can imagine is way way more expensive than just a typical windshield replacement (and typical windshield replacements are EXPENSIVE), it cheap insurance.

    As someone who lives in Canada, in a city that salts and gravels the roads religiously, a new windshield every 2 years with rock chip fillings done constantly it is basically a tax for living here. I've tried other brands of "windshield clear bra" and from my experience while the protector keeps my windshield intact, the constant peppering from small stones created micropits in the film that couldn't be fixed with a heat gun. When glass gets hit by tiny rocks usually the hardness of the glass means there isn't too much of a mark, with the film as it is softer even smaller stones would leave marks and after 1 winter the windshield had a slight haze to it. Heating the film would remove a small percentage but would still be annoying, and in bright direct sunlight it's almost like slightly frosted glass making it a safety hazard IMO. With my installer charging $650 for the film install and a new windshield costing me only $1200 it actually became more economical, and in my eyes safer, to just get a new windshield every 2 years instead of new film every year.

    If your windshield costs thousands of dollars to replace, like Larry’s Taycan, I’d says ExoShield, or similar is worth it. However, for most people, I think coatings like Supra Clear Armor is way more cost effective. It only costs $60 CAD here, and all of the cars that I have/had this coating on, never had one crack - chips yes, but the chips never cracked; all I had to do was repaired the chips.

  • @Onimalap
    @Onimalap Před 2 lety +1

    So interesting and so many questions… How about putting on older glass with some scratches? Fills or needs polished surface? Can you put coating on it? Applying on older car with seal covering glass requires tucking it under rubber or to edge? Can/should be applied on sides/rear? I guess I need to check their website. Super interesting. Thanks for video.

    • @utbigpapa
      @utbigpapa Před 2 lety

      I can't speak to this exact film. But another company called Stek has a similar type of film for windshields and it begins at about $500+. Really this stuff is for higher end cars. The Stek stuff also would get really scratched up and gross looking within 6-12 months. This looks like a better,Harder and Clearer film !

    • @utbigpapa
      @utbigpapa Před 2 lety +1

      It depends on if you'll need your windshield calibrated. Insurance usually does not cover calibration which can run several hundred dollars or over $1000 at a dealer. 💩

      Factory auto glass on my A7 runs about $1200 just for the glass, and the film ran me $500. Totally worth it with how much I drive (50k mi/yr) and I don't have "real" winters where I live.

    If clear bra isn't clear, how does it not compromise the quality of the colour underneath?

    • @utbigpapa
      @utbigpapa Před 2 lety +1

      Full on guess here: it compromises the light refraction of the paint but because you're not looking through it, it's not as noticeable. Looking at bare paint vs PPF, you can often spot the difference.
      Ever look at frosted glass and then apply water? I would guess the softness of PPF against the softness of paint allows for the frosted aspect of PPF to disappear.

    1: If Exoshield is so much more transparent than a clear bra, why not use Exoshield on the paint too? $$$?
    2: Since Larry put 70% tint on the windshield inside, will this reflect enough heat back out (at the exoshield) to compromise the adhesion?

      Its a historical term. The original "clear" PPF was originally just around the front bumper of the car as an advancement on those black "bras" that left tan-lines on the paint when you removed them. Now the PPF has been expanded to be installed on every inch of the vehicle.
