      It not about the score, score all you want, the issue is the celebrating of the goals, ( it's common place soccer edict to not celebrate the goals once you've scored 5 to six when the other team doesn't/ can't score.) Drinking Game: Take a shot every time Race, Gender or Nationality is brought up in an argument COMPLETELY unrelated to the topic being discussed.
    Nothing wrong with celebrations but after your lead is like 5+ goals, no real need to celebrate for every goal afterwards just embarrasses the other team more than they already are. You've essentially already won the game so there's no real need to celebrate when you're up by like 10 goals. Quick high fives, short small celebration and then get back to finishing the game off. Have some sportsmanship. You're out there to win yes, but rubbing it into the other teams face is over the top. I'm surprised there is no penalty for Show boating, would be good to keep the game classy if this is how they want to act. Only time to see crazy over the top celebrations in huge game winning goals or milestone goals. I love seeing players celebrate special goals, like the time Ovechkin did the "Hot stick" celly after his 50th of the season. But flopping all over the ground like some fish out of water doesn't even look like a legitimate celebration, looks incredibly forced and hurts to watch.

    Clearly the issue isn't being discussed in a way that makes it clear to Team USA, because they keep arguing one thing when the issue is something related but an entirely different point:
    1. Good for them winning a game they were obviously going to win.
    2. Absolutely score as many goals as you can in 90 minutes, and don't let up.
    3. Don't make yourselves look like some amateur rec league with excessive celebrations after every point scored.
    These ladies are supposed to be professionals, both on the field and off it. I'm glad they were having fun and yes, congratulations to those players who had not scored an international goal in regulation before. BUT, hasn't Rapinoe been here many times before? How about Morgan? These are seasoned players with a lot of experience under their belts, and I expected a little more restraint and some composure from their senior players. Where was their coach in all of this? Or was she shrieking like a high school cheerleader from the bench as well?
    They just entered the group stage and beat a team who they were pretty much guaranteed to beat as soon as the pools were announced. They beat them convincingly, and in the process set a new record, which again, great for them, that's very impressive. But maybe don't act like every goal scored is the tiebreaker in the semi finals. It came off as rude and showboating. There's such a thing as being called a sore winner, and this is what that looks like. Keep it classy, ladies, because who knows what might happen over the course of this tournament. I know that they are an impressive team, but if they ever find themselves down by more than one goal with less than 5 minutes left in regulation, and they see their opponents celebrating a little too hard, I know they'd be ultra salty about it.

    I think that there is a reason why men do not show these classless goal celebrations in garbage time - there is pride on the losing side that they understand and care about. Heck, I am a small point guard and absolute amateur level, but I have pride. If you score on me twice of thrice and start to clown about or talking trash, then I would foul you hard. Many basketball coaches acknowledge this and subs the starters for the rookies and garbage time players. The argument that some of the American players that scored their first ever World Cup goals should be allowed to celebrate like maniacs is a bad argument. First of all, no- you shouldn’t celebrate like that, even if it’s a significant goal for you personally. You might want to, but you’re gonna have to suck it up and respect the other team. It’s called putting respect, the match, the fans, the other players, and the sport in general over yourself (because all of that is, in fact, more important than you) - aka sportsmanship. I’m not saying the players can’t be happy, they can and should be as happy as they can be but there is a difference between your internal emotions and how you externally react to them or express them. Secondly, most of the goals that were scored and over-celebrated were not scored by newcomers, they were scored by veteran players and they still celebrated like they just scored the winning goal in the World Cup finals. So that should put that argument to rest.

  • @polkadotcat
    @polkadotcat Před 5 lety +1

    Abby, a men's team knows not to celebrate. Men and women approach the concept of respect quite differently. It stems from all throughout history if you disrespect another man he will either knock you out, or bring his tribe back to destroy your tribe. Guys will hire the guy who has been working the longest and is next in line - women hire the flashiest interviewee. These American women in soccer are self-centred in their celebration, and in society as well. There are guys who do that too, but they take an earful from their teammates and coaching staff afterward, and it shows they are not quite men yet. It's nice to see some women in the media to call out this as disrespectful.

    I agree with this assessment. Scoring what goals you can and staying on your game is not disrespectful, and there is the goal differential thing to consider, but taunting the other team is disrespectful. Almost every sport has something like an "unsportsmanlike conduct" penalty for excessive celebrations. Soccer also has a penalty for "bringing the sport into disrepute". This could easily be applied here, because the US women's team is perhaps worldwide the greatest symbol and spokesperson for this great women's sport, and when people see them mocking their opponents it is not going to make girls from Thailand think this is something they want to pursue. Sports works best when there is "respect in sport".
