- I've pre-ordered a Shaper Origin, but it isn't due to arrive until January 2018. In preparation (its now Sep 17), I've been doing my best to learn Inkscape and Fusion 360 so I can fully leverage the capability of this awesome machine.
Save $100 on your (and my) order of Shaper origin using the referal code: preorder.shapertools.com/ref/...

This video is a bare-bone tutorial on how to get your desired BITMAP/JPEG/PNG file into vector form and to your tool as quickly as possible so you can start MAKING!
Please let me know if anything is unclear, and i'll be happy to try and help.
Happy Making!

Great stuff. Looking forward to the Shaper video.
rr7110 thanks. Obviously very minimalist approach to converting file. But that was my goal. No more, no less
I too just ordered a Shaper and currently trying to learn Fusion 360. Do you have any insight to what the Shaper plugins will look like? If you look at the CAM features of Fusion you will see that the full cutting operation is simulated for the tools selected. Here is a good video that demonstrates the Fusion CAM features using the Shopbot post processor. I hope Shaper does something similar for a simulation and passes Z and tool information in addition to the vectors to the machine to make the cutting operation easier. Hopefully, just requiring you to follow a series of commands/steps displayed on the screen as you cut.
I do not believe it will pass tool information. From the videos I've seen, it is an on board tool selector (the screen on the actual tool).
I can tell from your comment that you are already far better versed in Fusion 360 than myself.
Good info. I basically found the same info for use with a X-carve.
John Conklin good deal. I'm glad you were able to validate my experience/understanding.
I wanted to provide the shortest, most to the point tutorial I could. *I'm from the instant gratification generation haha
Good stuff, thank you sir!
Andy Birkey as the first person to use a Cnc upside down...I’m pretty sure this video is below your skill set haha! But thanks for watching Andy!
No it wasn't! #actualmoron It was really helpful, seriously!
Did you do a follow on video on cutting out the panda?
sawdust1232 I let you you down. I did not.
Chronic Woodwork you had one job :)
Did you ever cut this? I'm curious if you had to make changes based on Shaper's required color palette.
ga1205 I have not yet, but someone actually followed this tutorial on the shaper community forums and did an inlay with Purple Heart and maple. I wish I could post a picture on here. Are you a shaper owner/active in the owner forums?
Maybe you can access this to see his process: it seemed to work for him. community.shapertools.com/t/my-first-projects/1090
Thanks for sharing the link. I'm not active in the forums (yet). My father bought one and I've been trying to use their Adobe Illustrator template to create a design, as well as Fusion 360, but nothing seems to be working. Thought I'd try Inkscape before posting out to the forums. Thanks for the quick reply!
ga1205 you bet! Look for Gary. He does a pretty good walkthrough. Inkscape is definitely limited, but it’s an great way to get started quick and build confidence. Thanks for watching and reaching out

thanks for sharing
Sunny sunny Sunny you bet- hope it helped! thanks for watching
How do Inkscape and Fusion compare as for as difficulty learning to use each?
JB Marker in my limited experience I’d say Fusion is more difficult, but they are just entirely different programs. Inkscape (to me) is more like illustrator or photoshop, where Fusion is more like another CAD program with the added power of parametric design.
Thank you sir. I have been toiling with Fusion primarily because I don't have any CAD background, so I will push on. But now after viewing your video on Inkscape, I can see the benenfits of that program as well. I'm supposed to to receive my 1st batch pre-order Origin anytime soon. Do you have yours yet?
JB Marker I do not. Im batch two. Can’t wait!
I feel like such a jerk, because I've got my S-O from the pre-order, and I've never once used it. Never once. Two little kids leaves me without much time in the shop and a long 'honey do' list.
Thanks for sharing this, because it gives me some ideas for a workflow starting with a paper design and taking a picture, which is something my caveman brain can figure out.
R. James Scheffler III I’ve got one kid with plans for others. Are you saying I have to give up woodworking !??? Haha
@@chronicwoodwork5466 I really hope not! Part of not doing much woodworking lately for me has been doing a heck of a lot more metalworking. I'm restoring a Bridgeport.
But! I've got a project in mind for the S-O and your vid has already got me planning it for this weekend. Thanks!
Do you have or are planning to make any videos using the Shaper Origin?
sawdust1232 I have a few saved stories on my Instagram on shaper. Not sure about CZcams though. Life just gets busy. I’m just a guy in a garage after work
