Encoding Cut Depth with Inkscape for your Shaper Origin with Jenner

  • This is a video showing you how to encode cut depth on your SVGs using the software Inkscape. Cut depth is a new feature introduced for Shaper Origin with the Jenner update. While the official way from Shaper Origin is to use Shaper Studio to do it, it is actually also possible to do it in a very convenient way with Inkscape (a free SVG editor).
    Thank you very much to Hynek, who has helped me to figure out how to do this.
    Note: Additional resources for depth encoding:
    - Shaper published an article about this topic (this wasn't available when I published this video): support.shapertools.com/hc/en...
    - Web app to set cut deptht cutdepth.storgaarddesign.com .

      You can easily open an SVG file in any text editor. Just right-click and open with. Add the code as he showed using the same tag, just adjusting the right side of the equals to match your needs. Can do this for each object, such as the “rect” one he showed in his example.

    Excellent! Then if you name the objects you’ll be able to identify different objects from the XML-file and define cut depths there. Just copy-paste ”shaper:cutDepth=mm” before /> and then add appropriate depths before that mm. I tried both and maybe editing them directly in to the XML-file is a tad faster. Naming of the objects is pretty fast. Anyway, this was a very useful video. Thank you.

    • @Woodensoul
      @Woodensoul  Před rokem

      Hi Pekka. Yes, that's exactly right, you can also edit the code directly. I have found this to be more time consuming if you have multiple/many objects/lines in your file, because figuring out which code snippet represents what object is time consuming. With Inkscape, you can just select the line you want and edit the depth. But both methods work indeed...

      I don't like using graphical user interfaces for describing geometry. I'm a computer programmer and am able to concisely and exactly express my designs in code.
      The two selling points of the Shaper Origin for me we're
      * It's small storage footprint
      * I could directly control it in a language I knew.
      If they're trying to take the latter away then I feel cheated.
      BTW: did you notice if there was an XML namespace definition for the "shaper" namespace?

    • @Woodensoul
      @Woodensoul  Před rokem

      @@marknahabedian1803 I applaud you for being able to control your design in code; a really nice skill to have. I don't think they are trying to take away that. After all, the SO continues to work with the standard SVG format. It's just that they are not teaching you how to do it, and thats kind of a bummer.
      Can you specify what you mean by "shaper namespace"?

    • @rogmag74
      @rogmag74 Před rokem +1

      @@Woodensoul The shaper namespace has to be defined in the xml file before you add an attribute starting with "shaper:" to the file. Shaper actually has an article about this, that fixes the preview error. Search for "Manual SVG Cut Depth Encoding".

    I hadn’t looked into this yet as I just received my Origin. But this is exactly what I suspected. SVGs are XML-based, similar to HTML so you can make your own custom tags. Thanks for sharing the exact tag so I don’t have to do the legwork. I have Fusion360 for personal use (free), but much easier to mock-up in Figma and to share across devices. Then just open the SVG in any text editor or code editor. I’ll have to do a little research to identify if it’s numbers with “in” for inches since I use imperial.

    • @Woodensoul
      @Woodensoul  Před rokem

      Yes, editing with a text editor works fine, it’s just pretty cumbersome to figure out what pieces of code are what lines, therefore the inkscape solution is more easiy to use. Regarding inches, try to find a file on the shaper hub encoded in imperial and open it in a text editor and you should be all set 👊🏼

    • @benmooreman

      That’s probably true. Mac probably run into an unknown tag and then just stops trying to resolve the code and spits back an error. You should be able to open and view in a browser. Haven’t tested but this is a common way to view SVG since it was designed for web-rendering of vector images.

    Thank you for this nice trick !
    Looking a shaper hub file (Flush Ring Pull 1.5in), I found the "shaper:cutDepth" parameter as you show, but also a "shaper:pathType" parameter, with "hogging" as value. Did somebody who uses AutoPass have an idea of utility of this ?

    • @Woodensoul
      @Woodensoul  Před rokem

      Most welcome, Jean-Baptiste! Hogging? I don’t even know what that means. And searching for it reveals some dodgy practices that have nothing to do with woodworking. I hope someone else can comment?

    • @jean-baptistefagot837
      @jean-baptistefagot837 Před rokem +1

      It seems "hogging" is when you remove a lot of material, like roughing (cleaning a big pocket for example). I find other values for shaper:pathType parameter, as "exterior" or "interior". I think it may be an old version of color system in svg, to know what type of cut Shaper must do. But it clearly seems to be a potential promising tweek for future developments to Shaper.
