    This is a video where I show detailed tests of a new tape for the Shaper Origin, called WonderTape. The WonderTape is made out of vinyl and is an alternative to the original ShaperTape sold by Shaper Tools. This video shows how this tape performs.

    Welcome to my woodworking channel. I am passionate about taking the most wonderful woods mother nature created and turning them into beautiful objects of day to day use. This is not a DIY channel about teaching the woodworking craft, showing you new and nifty techniques about how to build wooden objects or anything alike. It’s about celebrating nature’s beauty and providing inspiration for projects of your own.

      Hey Javier, right now not really. I’ve started to use the Shaper plater right now, and only use the tape for larger inlays or marking my larger pieces with my logo. 😁

    Thank you for another good video. I had not seen this tape, I'll have to try it. My experience has been with larger pieces and multiple passes where I am moving the SO over the tape on each pass. The sawdust and just friction from the tool base will scratch and tear the paper tape and make it unreadable to the machine. I have had to add more tape and rescan on occasion to finish a project. I'm hoping this tape will be better in these situations.

    • @Woodensoul

      Most welcome and thanks for your kind words. I totally expect this tape to be way more scratch resistant, but I should have tested that…

    Thanks for the video. Saw this online but did not buy it. Also did not realize Shaper Tape gets old. Reusable tape in specific situations has functionality. I'm not sure how happy I'd be trying to store multiple longer pieces of this.

      Most welcome. This is how I store it: czcams.com/video/hiGQ-Z0ARko/video.html, in plastic portfolios, that works really well. Or you can stick it to a laminated sheet. I am doing this already for paper tape, so will continue doing it with this one.

    Just ordered. If this doesn't delaminate then the extra $0.03 is totally worth it!

  • @TdotRob
    @TdotRob Před 4 měsíci +1

    The main advantage is the reuse? I was expecting the main advantage to be that the vinyl tape doesn't delaminate. Seems like the waste of tape that is unusable due to delamination would overcome the cost differential. Especially so when buying multiple rolls that all come from the same batch. The "answer" for delamination includes lots of user vigilance about the temperature of the tape and pulling it off the roll straight vs at an angle, etc. Getting free of all the required user vigilance alone is arguably worth the cost differential. For me, anyway. YMMV. Thanks for alerting us to the new product and the thorough review!

    • @Woodensoul
      @Woodensoul  Před 4 měsíci +1

      Delamination!! That was the word I didn't know. I had multiple (many!) cases of delamination with the paper ShaperTape, and that was what I was referencing to at the end, with the expiry date. That problem always cost me nerves, time and money. That won't be the case with this tape, so you are right, that is an additional advantage. I just think that the reuse will save more money than the delamination, but in sum its even better...

    So some tips, use a piece of tape or vinyl scrap and attach adhesive side on backer and it pulls right apart. Another pro tip peel just maybe half an inch of backing fold it back over then attach just the end and use the roll in your other hand and spool it out which creates a straight line, then cut if you don’t want to fumble with it, and hold the end and grab the tag end of the backer and pull back as you activate adhesive and press down.

    Thanks for the review. I am somewhat skeptical about the reuse property. How am I supposed to store it between projects? I doubt it can be rolled up.
    If it was a lot cheaper than the Shaper tape it would be worth it, but not at a premium over the Shaper tape.

    Do know how clear packing works over it? If you could peel packing tape off the vinyl you could leave the backing on and reuse it forever

    • @Woodensoul
      @Woodensoul  Před 4 měsíci

      I have used packaging tape in the past and it works well (czcams.com/video/hiGQ-Z0ARko/video.html), but how would you find this useful in this context?

    • @JakMang
      @JakMang Před 4 měsíci

      If the packing tape would come off of the vinyl surface, leave the adhesive backing on the vinyl tape and just place the tape with packaging tape over it multiple times

    cool product, but there is too much meat on the bone for the seller and not enough for the buyer. If it were $20 I would consider it, but at $30? I'm not sure its really worth it. The reusability factor is cool but honestly, I cut through much of my tape so Im not sure how much of it could actually be reused.

    • @Woodensoul
      @Woodensoul  Před 4 měsíci

      Yeah, the vinyl costs are rather high, so it's a low margin product. But as mentioned in the video, if you destroy most of your tape, then that product is not for you...

    I think this is a really neat idea, my concern would be that Shaper is owned by Tooltechnic Systems who also own Festool and SawStop. They have repeatedly shown that they will maintain their market dominance by enforcing through legal means their patents that they hold. It would seem that WonderTape is treading in that grey area so I hope they have consulted a lawyer before getting too deep into production and distribution.
