Most accurate statement ever about these cars. I learned to drive in a 2004 Polo 1.4 TDi and I ended up with a 1990 Mk II breadvan Polo because it came in as a trade in one day where I worked and I was not going to let it just be scrapped.

I feel this, as someone who's car is missing said interior panels and has the windows held up with adhesive tape. Nothing will ever put these cars down. The old ones might seem unwanted, but they will never truly die.
I guess itâs like the Toyota Corollas here in the US. I knew people who still have ones from like 2004-2007 and they still go strong.

As the owner of a 2004 Saturn Ion (you want a challenge, own a car where the company closed down more than a decade before- finding parts is an adventure) I feel this. Driver window? Nope. Motor took a dump in about 2015. At least it's closed. Sun visor on the driver side? How about your hand, blin?
Yet. And yet. All plastic body panels. Battleship gray. Hit it with a shopping cart? The scratch merely reveals the underlying gray plastic. Smack it with a knee? The door panel will flex and spring back. No dents. No rust.
Is it a POS? Yeah, by some points of view. Would I still keep it as a beater even if I got a different car? Yep.
I enjoy having a POS car. There's something satisfying about giving someone a ride and them not knowing how to get out of the car.
The immortal Saturn, every years theres always less and less, and they always look haggard. Truly an icon. The definition of drive it into the ground.

As someone who has always owned old cars, I feel every inch of this video. My old Datsun station wagon could do over 100mph - if you dropped it out of an airplane. But these old cars last forever. My current car, a 2007 Hyundai Accent, has almost 300,000 miles on it. Her name is Buzzkyll. Boris, you left out the most important part of the video - what is this car's name? Old cars develop personality. You have to name them.
@Grimmalkin61 totally agree. My old car, a 1994 Mitsubishi Magna, could hit 160km/h no problems (if it was on a steep downhill grade & I left it in neutral!)
My current car is a 2001 Toyota Camry V6. 320,000 km on the odo, auto transmission, & no air conditioning (compressor died, & it would cost more than the car is worth to buy a new one. Which sucks during the Aussie summer!) Still goes just as well as the day it was made, even if it's a bit of a gas-guzzler! It was previously owned by my old man for about 15 years, it's been mine for the last 2. I don't really have a name for it, other than just, "the old bus".

5:28 you know that turning that switch up actually lowers your headlights. So you are blinding oncoming traffic the most when the switch is at 0, which is also the position you are supposed to use when you dont have anything heavy in your trunk

6:25 I was able to buy a truck for wicked cheap and it was sitting on the lot for ages just because it has a manual transmission. It's so easy to learn and fun. I don't understand why so many people have issues learning
They want the comfort of not having to deal with the clutch pedal and changing gears, but sadly because of that most of those drivers especially younger ones are then on the phone because of it. So in the end, automatic gearboxes make our lives more dangerous.
Because it's hard to smoke weed while driving a manual.
Not only its easy to learn, but its also way more useful in countryside and small towns than automatic ones

Boris... I picked up on the polo a couple of videos ago when you first showed a couple of shots of you living in it. I completely understand all your mixt feelings and as a former polo owner (somebody does actually buy them :)) ) all i can tell you is that your polo will serve you until it's dying breath. THANK GOD that you didn't buy the 1.4 FSI because that engine would have made you pull your hair out. The 1.2 12V is relatively reliable and if you take care of the usual oil and filter change you shouldn't have any problems with it. Congrats on the purchase and may it serve you reliably until you can afford a new one!

I can confirm (ive got a 2008 Polo 1.4TDI that magically appeared in my possesion) that you have to keep an eye out that you aren't blown across 3 lanes when its a bit windy. Also 200km/h is acheivable with a steep enough hill, hope your staying safe boris!

Welcome to the VAG club, Boris !!! I also own a Volkswagen - a Volkswagen Bora to be precise. If you fix the rust, that Polo would be a better car.
Oh god - I had a 1.4 2008 model until last year - and everything you said about the handling of the car is exactly the same. The only real difference is that I got the floaty feeling once I got to about 90mph on the motorway. It brought a smile to my face to hear the same complaints.
I do miss the shelf under the steering wheel though. It was good for hiding mobile phones in.
