The Casualty Ratio is 3 Russians killed for every 1 Ukrainian killed. If memory serves, Russia's nominal population advantage is about 3.5 X Ukraine. Do you see the problem? Ukrainian WIA are far more likely to live and return to the front than their Russian counterparts.
Since Ukraine is not likely to run out of Equipment any time soon, Russia will continue to damage itself on Ukraine, quite possibly to the point where it can no longer defend itself. As far as going to war with the US, Russia is already at a point where it can not defend itself.

Victory isn't just based on numbers on ground and in Kia either. You also had a mad exodus of the smart russians leave russia before mobilization, you have a further amount being killed wounded etc. All that is effectively going against Russia economically going forward. Brain drain a bunch of war cripples for workers or no workers because russia just leaves theirs to die if injured, he'll they don't even gather bodies of their fallen. So then you have sanctions strangling the economy further, 14% of their refining capacity is pooched. So making less money with less I telligent people around and needing to care for war casualties. Look at the flooding look at the fires, russia already tears itself apart. The fall has begun it's just going to take time. Their economy is only being propped up by artificial means right now aka its on life support.

100 squaremiles is a very small territory. It's around 270 km². Kharkiv alone is 350 km². Moscow is over 2.500 km², so nearly 1.000 square miles. Kiev is around 850 km².
100 sqare miles or 270km² is around 1/1.000 of Ukraine. So the russian gains are tiny, especially if you consider, they already lost thousands of soldiers for this 0.1% of Ukraine, without even reaching the defensive positions, and with Ukraine willingly giving up some territory for losses. With this "strategy", Russia would have to lose millions of soldiers before they conquer Ukraine 🤷‍♂️

As everyone knows, it has not started yet. The big campaigns take off in June. Either this was preliminary reconnaissance by force, or a feint to draw Ukrainian forces away from Donetsk, which is obviously Russia's first goal. If Russia secures all of Donetsk and Luhansk, then whatever else happens in this war, Russia can claim a form of victory, of 'liberating the ethnic Russians' in Ukraine. The two provinces also make great negotiating 'chips' in any future peace deal. That is not to say that Russia will stop at these two provinces, I have always suspected their ultimate goal is a buffer zone along the Dneiper, inline with Belarus. This war is going on for years or until the west forces Ukraine to negotiate. The signs are the war of attrition is gradually moving in Russia's favour. This should be expected to continue unless the west's only hope, which is a collapse in the economic and political systems of Russia occurs. At the moment there is little sign of this.

The most important issue for Russia... is time. This accelerating dilemma converges into two conjoining scenarios.
Firstly the new weapons will begin to flow into the hands of the Ukrainian nationalists very soon.
It will be a steady trickle... but the US have made it clear, it's not going to abruptly end.
This means any major advance in the near-future will be far too costly to contemplate.
Pushing the war into a frozen conflict. Which only 'helps' the current Ukrainian nationalist regime enter NATO and complete safety.
Time is moving speedily against the Russians .. and they know it.
So Russia has to make gains now. The only way to do that is make Ukraine pull resources away from the main 'active' frontline.
To try and 'win' the oblasts they annexed... in order to say they have won their main objective.
They're using ill-trained cannon fodder to push aimlessly at Kharkiv. The Ukrainians know this is just a poorly executed subterfuge.
That's why they aren't concerned about it. They're only concerned about how Russia is using the propaganda from it.
It is a meaningless gesture, as most efforts by the Russian regime are now.
This leads to Russias' real and main worry. Trump is not going to be elected this year. That's official now.
Whomever, or whatever controls the US has made that obvious... Trump is not a mistake they're likely to make a second time.
This means four more years of a near-constant military lethal aid reaching the nationalists.
As soon as Biden is re-elected... there will be a huge push to 'finish Russia off'. Get as much lethal aid there as possible.
The Russian regime has no leverage... all they can do is rattle their nukes. But agains, it's a bluff... because they literally cannot use them.
Russia is on the ropes... and the regime in charge know it.

From my pov, this is no subterfuge or anything tricky like that. What you see is exactly what you get.
I base this on a few things.
    1. Russia has been successful with the tactics it's currently using in every war it has been in prior to this. Anything before that was the USSR. The winner of the last war always thinks that the next one will be fought the same way as the last. For historical examples of this, there are the French who thought WWII was going to be fought like WW1 and prepared for trench warfare only to be blitzed. US Command who thought Afghanistan would be fought the same way as Iraq. When it finally swing around it found out that it no longer had the skill to fight symmetrical warfare, etc. The loser of a war would be stupid to fight the same way so they always innovate to try and surprise the enemy.
    2. The Russian army is run by Conservative ideology and top-down leadership, as such, it's inflexible, ponderous, and slow to innovate and react. Combine this with 1 and the leadership will have had no incentive to innovate anything.
    3. The Russian MoD is dumb. It's a simple fact of a government run on Conservative ideology and top-down leadership. Bring smart gets you de-selected, furthermore, Putin is the absolute top and being smarter than him IS fatal, as a result, only people dumber than him who ideologically pose no threat get the post. Anyone else gets defenestrated.
Governments run on Conservative ideology are incompetent and the more extreme the Conservative ideology becomes the more incompetent it is, it can still be dangerous despite being inefficient, and once it's in the continuum of Fascistic ideology of Conservative ideology then the government becomes massively incompetent.

@@HubertBarnes No, Conservative ideology got them in those wars. The only consistent value in Conservative ideology across all societies and cultures is a superior/inferior dichotomy.

I'd love an interview with a Ukranian soldier who has been rotating in and out of the frontline since the war began. Someone who has seen everything through changes since before the war. I guess that will be a book after the war is over. They definitely could make a movie about the Wagers and prisoners that were allowed to fight for their freedom.

this oparation is clearly not meant at a decisive move, and there is little exepctation in the russian side that this will lead to anything significant. though it could be extended on an opportunistic level. teh goal here is to make the ukraninan side extend their lines, and throw soldiers at the norhern sector rather than the much more inportant east and south. this hightened exention will prevent ukranians from launching oparations more aggresively , and hopefully (for teh russians ) to prevent oparations like last summer's offensive in the south, which was barely contained and with very heavy casualties. it could be that they would even find a way to get belarus to allow them to extend the front from their territory , like they did in the beginning of the war. yet thos could be held in check by teh french warning thatthey would send troops in to guard that area...

This channel reminds me of the stories of Berlin residents who were still convinced that Germany was deep in Russian territory, destroying the remnants of the Red Army in the spring of 1945, when in fact the Red Army was just outside Berlin and the war was in it's final stages.

for this instance....which are extremely rare....we may see bureaucratic double speak work for Ukraine and its allies! kudos to whoever wrote that bill. When it comes to taking back territory I want to bring everyone's attention to the Ukrainians original breakthru that regained 300km of kharkiv which the russians are now fighting for AGAIN....that took 48 hours. With the level of russian training today or tomorrow doesn't matter all it takes is 1 exploited breakthru to watch whole swaths of their defense fall. If ukraines govt can remain outside the Russian sphere that will be the deciding factor as it has been in every country which russia now occupies. If the nationalism holds they will take it back doesn't matter who holds it....if they fall to the propaganda machine they will be Russia in all but name. Therer was a time in war torn chechnya where no one believed the people would ever support a russian-aligned regime but peoples memories are short....even when the tanks and mines are all around you., somehow. Ukraine must hold or else this is all for nothing, the world cannot let another war, another genocide, go unanswered and fade meaninglessly into history.
