always loved how the start of aoe1 feels so primal. makes me nostalgic to being a young kid trying to figure out this amazing game in an age before I had internet
Yes, I think I had dialup at the time but never played online until AOE2. My friend and I actually used the IPX protocol and a direct connection using the parallel port over some windows tool, I forget what it was called.. It does take me back too man, pure nostalgic feeling!

The first game I played on Windows was first-person airplane shooting. it was fun in its own way.
I think i had dialup only internet connection and I found it quite extravagant to text on the dial, but i had played a lot of RougeSpear in -dsl at the time.
I'd like to play RS3, Commondox, AOM 2, Hidden & DENGERUX and Allied Assault quite a bit now.
The first time I saw this game was on my cousin's computer in Germany, I was somewhere between 8 and 10 (my mother insisted on visiting our family in Germany a lot). The grittiness of it left a lasting impression on me. Same with Diablo 2.
I can still remember accidentally walling all my villagers in with houses bc I made a house circle around my town center

Score is very different in this game than AOE2. It gives 50 bonuspoints for having most researched techs, 25 for largest army, 25 for having most villagers, 25 for having most explored.. that's why score differences can be massive but game can be very close, when enemy has 1% more explored, 1 tech more, 1 more military etc. Furthermore, 2 points per tech researched, 1 for each vill, 1 for every 3% explored, 10 points for every artefact/ruins. And having a positive k/d helps a lot as well

@@blaubeer8039 also no loom makes axemen cut through vills like a hot knife through butter, they need like 3-4 attacks to kill a villager and the only thing that is remotely effective vs them early on are towers and slingers, both of which are expensive.
Defensive buildinds are shit in this game. They really made a mistake continuing with this outdated gameplay.
I have a feeling AOE1 was not created with having in mind that the players would get *this* good in playing it.
So Viper and zeda0 are literally outplaying its concept here

"villagers dont matter" remember in original AOE pre-rise of rome the pop cap was 50 so each vil really mattered back in the day. i never actually got ROR as a kid so when I eventually got into AOE2 the 200 pop blew me away XD
Oh, I remember that as well ^^ Also having a queue for your units vs individually pressing the button every time after the prev. finished building.
There was a patch "pop199", so your population increased up to 199 units in original AOE.

i played this today and it made me appreciate just how good aoe2 balance is. in this game if you're behind one age you die right away because unit and "blacksmith" upgrades are broken strong.
It also might be you just understand aoe better

The concept of garrison is foreign to the original Age of Empires. However, land units can "garrison" inside a Transport Ship, and the game even refers to this as "load".
I absolutely love how u have the elephants chase after u only to take them down for food to level up quickly
So as someone who grew up with AOERoR as a kid, does DE have those non-random scenario maps that were in the original like Catch Me If You Can or the non-random map Hill Country with the cliffs in the middle of the map?
I've been wondering that, as well. I used to have a crapton of fun with Border Patrol. 4v4, four villagers and a scout per player, and they spawned so close to each other. It was nuts, and I loved it.

Well played. Thus game looks like it is like 2 boxers punching at each other without any guard. Amazing.
You can only build on top of straggler trees though. And macedonians are not the most easiest civ to play. Can't get wololos but you get resistance to conversion. But I do recall they get fully upgraded towers, so defensive towers are always a good option :)

are the hotkeys in the same fashion like in aoe2 ? i'm thinking if it will be easy to adapt and not be misclicking all the time becasue you are used to aoe2
Similar to AoE2 HD. The keys tend to correspond to buttons in UI. Like: QWERASDF etc.

You should play on small islands its a map where you have to use transport ships but unlike pilgrim there is no major island but there is more ressources on the small islands

Nice game! Lots of twists and turns there. Slinger rush seems really powerful. I guess the counter is axemen or scouts?
Scouts I think. Axes do outdamage the Slingers, but they need to get close. If your opponent has 25 Slingers vs 25 Axes, many of the Axes would die before they get close because of micro, and because they move at the same speed as Slings. 1 attack from all 25 Slings would kill 1 Axe if they all land. Scouts though can easily close the gap, and have a bit more HP than Axes. If you get the +2 ATK pit bonus the Slingers will start dropping like flys against Scouts, but Scouts are soo costy. xD

What is the hotkey to selct the town center?
Lots of things I like better in AoE1. 1 being the team color is very visible on all units and buildings. Micro is also op lol
Yes you are supposed to make 3 docks early if you want to rush bronze age. Then put the majority of vils on wood to spam fishing boats. Nice hunting in stone age tho.
I got slaughtered by a player 😅 the funny thing the opponent had to literally send 50 scouts to find my last villager as I kept building town centres in random parts of the map 😂
Do you periodically return to play AoE 1 games still? My wife and I play every weekend but we never got into AoE II. It would be super awesome to see you show up occasionally :)

Can you watch the age of empires of Vietnam? I think you will be quite surprised. In the country we still play Age of empires 1 and have tournaments. we live on youtube but now we usually live on facebook gaming. we have a player named "CHIM SE DI NANG" and when he plays sometimes live views can go up to more than 60k.
Just watched one game - he's very quick. No idea what the commentator is saying - not quite as much shouting as memb, but a lot of words. Seems to be a mad race to bronze age then a quick win with the excess military.

Dude defensive play style make take longer and is tedious but its only counter is mass siege... Otherwise you cant lose

A bit late with dock in ror if you don't dock in conti or medit. I mean while you get rush you have time to press CTRL + D. If you get too nervous means you are not design to play this game. It is like a parallel system CTRL + D plus villagers plus barracks. Like a formula you remembered at school. Ror it is about pressing many keys noisy keyboard that is how you overcome your opponent. Another advance advise B + D dock quick, . For villagers, clicks and send parameters with SHIFT. That is how you beat in micro your opponent it works. A bit more on wood so you can do more docks.
