• Arpeggio - How and Why...
Take some piano lessons from Scott Houston “The Piano Guy.” In this video, Scott shows you how to play arpeggios on a piano or keyboard.
Using arpeggios is a great way to make your bass line more interesting and can be used as a terrific aid when improvising or getting out of a tune!
What exactly is an Arpeggio?
An arpeggio occurs when you play the notes of a chord in succession but not playing them at the same time. The notes are played separately, in some pattern but not together. Arpeggios can go up or down.
When played in your left hand, arpeggios truly can make your bass line come to life! In the video, Scott demonstrates many ways to play arpeggios in your left hand using patterns to make the bass line more compelling.
What’s more, using arpeggios in your right hand in an arpeggiated pattern can certainly be a fantastic tool to support you while improvising! Again, several examples will be shown to help you learn how to incorporate arpeggios tastefully into your soloing.
Finally, another great way to utilize arpeggios is as an ending for a tune. In our style of playing, you are always looking for a way to end your song. Arpeggios really provide an easy, dramatic way to get out of a tune! Be sure to take full advantage of them!
Houston’s life goal is to help you learn to play piano through piano lessons that you can take anywhere and at any time to get you started having some fun at a piano or keyboard as quickly as possible.
Scott Houston is the host of The Piano Guy television series on Public Television and has taught hundreds of thousands of folks like yourself, how to have some fun on their piano or keyboard. He wants to help you get there too-as quickly as possible.

HI SIR SCOTT,,THAT WAS SUCH A NICE INTRODUCTION TO ARPEGGIOS. NOW I UNDERSTAND WHAT AN ARPEGGIO IS. THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THE SIMPLE PRACTICAL EXPLANATION YOU SHARED . I ENJOY WATCHING YOUR VIDEO AND ALSO VERY ENTERTAINING PERSON YOU ARE SIR. I LIKE THAT SO MUCH..I WAS LAUGHING SO HARD...HAHAHAHAH
New sub here 👋. Can’t wait to practice the “anguished look” in the end. I’ve been doing it wrong all along.
Brillaint
Appreciate it ...
cool thanks bro
Thx... was looking for this kind of explanation...every other videos are running behind patterns
Thanks
:-)
Oh my while practising moonlight somata, those are arpeggios, however, i still have lazy fingers when playing other songs, want to play them well improvising arpeggios, I have your tape and book one. thanks
Cool teacher you are :)
I love ur class u are a good teacher
thx! appreciate it...
I love his online courses too, I'm taking them now, better than traditional piano lessons.
Ya know what for me playing these arpeggios looks hard that I screwed up the fingering for some of my scales practice. Playing arpeggios was only the beginning of my practice but I'll get use to it.
"You gotta sell it."
so an arpeggio is a fancy name for broken chord.
+gaming guy 2000 Yup. Exactly!
***** thanks, great guy :)
gaming guy 2000 not really
Redheadedmusician don't worry I know what they are now. I'm taking grade 3 now! yay
gaming guy 2000 how many years have you been playing?
u got to sell it baby!
Please what is the name of that song he played in the beginning, I love it.
Arpeggios are very common in Trance music.
"You got to sell it baby, you got to sell it!" hahahahahahahahaahah GOOD STUFF!
Yeah this piano playing stuff is VERY serious in my world. :-) They call it playing piano, not working piano, right?
5:39
This is the best piece of information I've ever heard
#look_serious XD
You reming me of Steve Jobs.
Pianist Ghandi
????
Your arpeggio video is one of the greatest explanation ever see. I am learning piano. I have a question . How can I learn a song today at home but when I go to class or in public I panic get nervous and forget everything I practice? What can I do?
Thanks for the nice complement... You get nervous because you haven't done it much. That's all. Stage fright is something that just goes away (for 99% of people) after you've played in public a few times. Realize that what you are trying to do (play piano for fun) is something that 99% of the people that might be watching/listening WISH they could do. They won't be harsh critics in most cases ... just jealous. That helps ease some jitters I think :-)
I share the same stage anxiety too! how can i control my anxiety so that my fingers won’t go soft and to stay calm to perform well?
How do Arpeggios fit in bits? If i wanna arpegiate a chord that repeats for 4 times, do i play every note 4 times?
Whats the name of the one he was doing at the beginning?
Moonlight sonata, I believe.
thanks for the video, but i am having one confusion between ostinato and arpeggio, if you can help
Ostinato just refers to a pattern that repeats over and over. So I suppose if you repeated an arpeggio over and over the same way within a song you could create an ostinato out of an arpeggio ...
Is it absolutely necessary to play arpeggios with correct fingering❓😁👍🏻
0:23 Could you please tell me the name of this piece? Great Video! Thank you :)
Mourad Blil It is moonlight sonata
I just started playing piano, and I'm getting a little sick of all these people telling me notes are important. I mean, I'm a free spirit.
LOL
I wanna be as good as he at piano
How can u insert arpeggio with melodies thanks
+Manny Singh The trick is to wait for a long pause in the melody line, typically at the end of a phrase somewhere. Then during the pause in the melody, you can fill in a few beats or maybe a whole measure or two if there is that much space, to run up or down a bit and give things a little flourish. Hope that helps...
can u give the suitable example thanks
Play Piano In A Flash / PianoGuyTV you are great =)
I thought an arpeggio is playing a broken chord plus the root note but an octive higher.e.g C arpeggio is CEGC.
СПАСИБО !!!!!!!!!! РОССИЯ ВЕЛИКИЙ НОВГОРОД
Anyone knows the name of the piece of music he plays in the first few minutes.
moonlight sonata
Moonlight Sonata by Beethoven.
I’ve practiced arpeggios so much as of late, but I still can’t get the fluency I want down. I can do small ones like 2 or 3 octave span but want to move to a full 7 octaves, any help?
Yes - put casters on your piano bench so you can slide up and down the length of the keyboard vs. leaning way left and right. :-)
Play Piano In A Flash / PianoGuyTV thank you, I will try that, and I’m gonna do some hard work on fluency over this week
I love you guy .... you have humor ....
but I'm danish nearly at 70' - and I find it hard to learn :-))
7400Denmark blueberry hill
Sell it.......nice angle. Thanks.
what piece did he play in the beginning?
Using the term "play" was generous (ha!)... but it was a tiny snippet of Moonlight Sonata (Beethoven)
Play Piano In A Flash / PianoGuyTV thanks😀
Are you still teaching?
Sure am! www.pianoinaflash.com is where you can find anything and everything about my program
Whats the first song/intro?
It's just generic "bumper" music we use for the intros and outros. Tried to put something together that sounded cheery and happy :-)
Play Piano In A Flash / PianoGuyTV no i mean when you introduce arrpegio that sound sad
Play Piano In A Flash / PianoGuyTV at 0:23
Moonlight Sonata
Play Piano In A Flash / PianoGuyTV ok thx
Não sabia que o Steve Jobs tocava piano.
This dude is clownin hahahaha
Steve Jobs plays piano
your a funny bubbley sort of person and fun to learn from thank you.click 'sub'
+gaming guy 2000 Tell my wife that would you please?
***** hahaha, sure thing!!!
Just my opinion Scott, but there's a difference between a relaxed, "this is fun" attitude, and falling into the trap of trying to generate traffic with silly behavior and graphics. If that really reflects your personality, then it's certainly not for me to criticize, cause it's real.. But remember first impressions matter. I've learned that the "POW! Super Secret Left Hand Pattern" type of videos, with the person yelling like a carnival barker, seldom convey any actual pedagogy, so I almost gave up after the first 20 seconds.
But even if you do it, keep it a little cleaner between the actual teaching, and the joking? You SO quickly moved into the kidding about "make a big gesture and scrunch your face", that I thought "is this about making music or about showing off"? Then you chilled out, "... all kidding aside", and were very natural, warm, and appealing in your delivery.
REALLY appreciate the clean headshot with neutral background when you are talking, and the overhead keyboard view is perfect. Just suggest a bit of "less is more" on the joking.
In other words, let it loose.
That's a cheesy introduction
I like it
Why thank you! I like to keep everything related to piano instruction VERY serious you know... Ha!
Haha nice😆
Thank you
