  • No wrong notes playing piano! (over a ii7-V7-IMaj7 progression)
    • Easy way to improvise ...
Today, Scott is focusing on improvisation by focusing on a often used chord progression that can provide a "pain-free" way to noodle around without any wrong notes.
Scott will be using a ii7-V7-IMaj7 chord progression. We'll be using the key of C. A standard chord contains three notes. We are going to turn these chords into 7th chords by adding a fourth note. Instead of having to jump up and down the piano, Scott makes it easier by moving down an octave and stacking them in a different order. In this way, you barely have to move your hand and simply have to find the notes with your fingers.
Now, with your right hand, Scott shows you how you can move all the way up and down the white notes and how each note can mesh with the chord you are playing with your left hand. Scott then shows how you can progress up and down the scales, use chromatic runs, and more, with keeping the whole idea of improvisation and creativity in mind. You can do it!
The last chord Scott shows you is a nice transition chord called a C sharp diminished chord that helps lead you back into the other chords. Finally, Scott combines everything and shows you how you can use these chords and scales to get creative and improv on your own!
Again, it is known as a ii - V - I (say 2-5-1) progression, and the more you practice - and there is not need for speed or accuracy - the more you can use your brain to make music. That is the focus of Scott's online pianoinalfash.com piano lesson learning environment - focus on learning how to play music, not read music.
We hope this helps! If you are interested in going further, visit learn.pianoinaflash.com/enroll to learn more about Scott's full Course offerings.

Your videos and course are helping me to reduce my dependence on printed sheet music...and actually PLAY, be playful, on the piano after a lifetime of reading sheet music and being frustrated when I make a mistake. The mistakes disappear when I play this way. And it’s fun. Thank you!!

Thank you, Piano Guy. When I was younger, my piano lessons were all about memorizing the notes on a page and playing them back perfectly. I mostly hated it. Learning how to improvise over chord progressions is so freeing. It opens up a new world! I am enjoying piano now and gaining much more musical understanding than when I was just trying to be a perfect copy of somebody else.

Yes, great job Scott. The target note was my hang up. Thank you for shedding light on that one. I was just randomly use the scale of the chord to try improvising without any fore thought of a target note as you just explained. I tried that target tip tonight and now I’m off and running, it was the missing piece. I’ve been practicing the three chord pattern that you just went over going around the circle 5th and am excited about applying it to all 12 ii V7 1maj7’s.

Thanks so much. Even though I've done tons of online lessons, I'm just that long-term classical player who needs (needed) a chart to be able to play. Finally, with moves that are really easy for me, my right hand was free to noodle, and after 10 15 minutes of noodling, tunes and motifs and licks began to emerge.

So exciting Scott! Santa brought me Scott’s Favorite Fake Books #1&2 for Christmas and I’ve already learned my very favorite song, Left my heart in San Francisco plus I was able to figure out the intro using your ear training techniques. My family is totally impressed! Now this video will give me a great next step to go it alone without needing sheet music and jazz it up even more. Thank you Scott!!!

Thank you for this explanation of basic improv .maybe now I can begin to put some of this other theroy to work and apply some tritone subs and ninths and elevens maybe even sharp and flat extended chords . The theory isn't very useful if it can't be applied to create music. Thanks again I think I might be able to put this to practice

This is excellent way to free your inner senses to find what works to feel and anticipate the harmonic stuff. This is helping so much. I am considering your courses but other factors may impinge? Great teaching Scott. You are giving me long awaited breakthroughs with music. I'm older and was too stuck in trying to trapped in the "other' pathway you mention, ok for classical but can impede others. I've realised I really like playing improvisation way. Like to do it with a bit of jazz too. Close to it here really. Thanks again.

One thing that was overlooked is the differentiation of the '7'. The ii7 and the V7 include the "dominant" 7 whereas the C7 is a major 7 which is 1/2 step above the 'dominant' 7
