In the non-classical styles, I typically teach and talk about we use Lead Sheets as opposed to traditional grand staff notation. However, it can still be very helpful to know how to read the grand staff, if even in an elementary way. Here we discuss 3 situations in particular. "Everybody Swings A Little" Audio Tip

I just saw a thread on another page concerning classical piano players having trouble trying to "swing" in jazz styles for the first time. It got technical and started devolving into what it would look like notated VERY quickly, so I responded with this and thought I would share it here as well in the hopes it may help some of you. Sometimes I feel that folks WAY over-complicate/over-analyze wh...

Hi there. I enjoyed your presentation and found it very interesting and helpful. As I play Harmonica and sing when I perform, I need to get a good quality microphone headset to use so as to obviate the need for me to try and cope with holding a hand-held wireless microphone at the back of my Harmonica. I would be very grateful if you would share with me the brand and model of the headset microphone you are wearing for this video presentation. The timbre of your voice and clarity of the overall sound says much for the mic you are using as it picks up every nuance of your vocal expression. Look forward to hearing from you on this by way of a posting in reply to mine. All the best to you. Cheers

That is an ancient Shure SM-10... I think I originally got that Mic in the late 80s when I was performing live all the time. Ha! That thing is an absolute warhorse and tough as nails. Because I wanted some integrated in-ear monitors (and a lot less obtrusive appearance) I have since switched to another headset made by DPA that is much smaller and less obtrusive ...

Hi Scott:) I would like to tell you a story. It all starts when I was around 6 years old. My "Parents" loved the Lawance Welk Show and absolutely loved Myran Florin on TV. They also loved Polka Music, especially the Polka King of Cleveland Ohio, Frankie Yankovich. This was over 55 years ago. I'm now 74. They thought they were going to fashion me into these people at a very early age. I was forced to learn Accordion, which I hated between the ages of 6 and 13, including emotional and physical abuse thrown in for good measure. I got beat to hell and back numerous times and finally at 13 years old, I had enough of it. I quit the accordion and told my "Mother" that if she beat me again, I would call the COPS on her. She finally got the message and left me alone. My "Father" never witnessed what my mom was doing to me because he worked second shift. He's another story! Regardless of the past, I grew up loving Music of nearly every type. My Refuge growing up and now is Books and Music from all the crap I went through growing up. My Favorite Music is Rock, 40s Big Band and Classical and of course Blues, especially BB King. The books I love to read is Physics, Astronomy, Cosmology. I became interested in the Piano and the Guitar over the past 10 years, which I currently own. I'm trying to learn them now. In retrospect, I should have had a Piano long ago. But, I guess my Parents weren't too smart in choosing the right instrument. I now consider the Piano the Ultimate and Universal Instrument to learn and play. I like the way you teach because I simply have a hard time "reading" music and using my Left Hand for Chords. Just today, watching your Webnar, I've learned three major Chords. And, I love it. I may take that step and purchase your entire course in the near future. It's heck of a bargain considering actual lessons are around $50 a half hour. Have a Nice day:) Mike

I am SO sorry for the fact that your early experience playing an instrument (accordion...) was so fraught with bad memories and lack of success. But I am thrilled that you now are casting off that "old wet blanket" and pushing to have some fun and learn to play piano. Thanks for the nice words. Glad you learned something at the webinar, and I wish you the best of musical times moving forward. Have fun!!
