  • In the non-classical styles, I typically teach and talk about we use Lead Sheets as opposed to traditional grand staff notation. However, it can still be very helpful to know how to read the grand staff, if even in an elementary way. Here we discuss 3 situations in particular. Helping me as a guest on this video is the fine concert pianist, good friend and colleague, Robert Estrin.

Great insights. Keep up the good work. As far as staff notation goes, for me it is another tool for helping to remember a song, because I can see the image of the score in my head. As much as I can see the image in my head of what my hands are doing. It helps with mental practice too.

Thanks much to both of you. What I love about you, Scott and Robert, particularly is how humble and meek the way you present, yet you are the experts in this field. GOD BLESS you all!

Great video and guest! I watch a lot of Robert Estrin's videos. I am a horrible sight reader, so I can't play classical music very well. But I'm happy to play Scott's way and am looking forward to playing from a fake book of 60's music. Looking forward to more videos of you two together!

I completed Scott’s online piano course and am using sheet music, but it’s slow going. Especially for those chords that are off the staff, I find myself just writing the letter next to the note. Any tips for improving reading?

HI Kelly! Wondering why you are trying to "read" chords (off the staff) as opposed to just using the chord symbols like I teach in the Courses? Maybe I'm misunderstanding something...

Play Piano In A Flash / PianoGuyTV Your course and technique are outstanding. I downloaded some sheet music for boogie woogie classics like “Boogie Woogie Stomp.” So I’m muscling through some stuff that’s pretty complex for me.
