Here we have one of the real war heroes. A guy who time after time, in the wars end, took off together with 30-40 comrades to intercept formations of 1000 bombers escorted by 1200 fighters, and survived and even got a number of kills

True, I dont see the bravery in attacking a small group of interceptors outnumbering them by 20:1

Willi Reschke was the best soldier from WW2, greetings from Tabor (Czech republic), from the piece of land, where Willi Reschke jumped from his burned plane. (Battle of Tábor and Jindřichohradecko). Legends never die

Willi was a natural born pilot; he got started late in the Weltkrieg--- due to his abilities, just as it was in the case of Jimmy Stewart, he was initially assigned to flight instructor duties...Fliegeroh (comment below) asked where Willi lived; he was stuck in East Deutschland , that's why his book only came out in this century. gl

I tried a translation. Don't judge too hard, It is a rather free translation to catch the meanings of his statements instead of presenting a meniculous translation of the phrases:
Q: How were the odds shooting down a Mustang (P51 D) with a TA or an 190?
WR: Well, how to say? I think every single (pilot) will have a different opinion on that.
But to be clear, the Mustang was good (capable). You must not underestimate her.
She was fast, agile, just good.
She had one big advantage against every single of our…
Well, I haven't had a dogfight against a Mustang with the TA anymore. A pity. In hindsight I regret not having a direct comparison. But with the 109 / 190 I had plenty of dogfights with the Mustang.
The Mustang was capable of making a very quick first turn, i.e. the initial turn.
It happened that (inaudible) she was already almost behind you. Many (German) pilots lost their nerves and dived away, which finished them right away anyway.
But if you kept on turning, you got her eventually.
Q: Then you got her eventually?
WR: Then you got her eventually. And if you knew that, and all the old hands knew that, they managed to…
    Q: With the 109 (ME 109)?
WR: With the 109, and also with the 190. With the 190 it's been even easier, because the Messer… 109… well, if you haven't had the muscles, your arms got tired. She (the ME 109) had a kind of a steering resistance (Steuerdruck = steering pressure). Sometimes you had to pull with both hands. You've got tired.
    Q: (inaudible)
WR: No, that worked fine with both / two.
I mean, she was good indeed (the Mustang). But… that doesn't mean you need to be inadvertily…
I'd say, the biggest threat was the overwhelming number. That's it.
A single one alone… you don't need to be frightened of a Mustang.
(WR appear to consider this might sound like boasting)
(with a calming tone) I'm just telling this out of my own experience.
But certainly… they were always like 10 or occasionally 20 of them, that was an overwhelming force. That was the dreadful.
If you seeked one of ours… there was no one… But Mustangs were always there. You had plenty of them around you.

Komisch. Bei N24 wird immer erzählt dass die Mustang das beste Jagdflugzeug des Krieges war. Ein ehemaliger Pilot der deutschen Luftwaffe, der im Kampf auf eben diese traf, war ganz anderer Meinung 😅. Flieg kleine Me 109 ! Du bist eine Legende.

    Hi,
Do you know if it is possible to send a letter to W. Reschke ? I am looking for photo or info of JG301 Stab III during this period : 16 october 1944 - 15 April 1945. My grandfather was a mechanic on TA152H plane.
    thx.

aikishugyo Many German pilots lost their nerve at that point and dived out, whereupon they would be immediately finished off.
yes germany had at the end of the ww2 pilots with 10 hours flightlessons . it was normaly to shoot down this guys.some of german aces shoot down a lot of mustangs, thunderbolds and spitfire. but the advantage was to much.

    • @moss8448

thanks man, yeah that 'long nose FW' was a handfull to say the least. Chuck Yeager himself thought that the 190 was the best overall plane of WWII and Kurt Tanks version was a beast. With all the books (and I've read hundreds) I've read about WWII aviation the one theme that comes across strong is it's not so much the plane as it is the skill of the pilot. The US was able to churn out pilots on an industrial level whereas the Axis were hampered by losses and rushing pilots into the fray with little experience and the veterans fought til they died or were badly wounded. Didn't help having Goering running the show either, they really should've let Galland do it and follow his advice.
Imagine if the 'Star of Africa' would've lived man he was something else; too bad a mechanical failure brought that guy down.
Way too many without real knowledge give so much credit to the Mustang I've gotten into too many arguments with Mustang fanboys.
