A good way to judge the spacers you need is to take the washers you have and place it next to the gap to kind of eyeball the chainline adjustment it will make. This can save having to do it a second time if the first washers you put on are not enough spacing or too much spacing.
+R - edits even when I build cheap bikes, the cassette guard is step one after initial build. Especially since you can see how off center it is, that was meant to be removed immediately, you don't even need to remove the cassette for those.
You mean to tell me that a spoke protector that is there to prevent the chain from chewing up the spokes if it ever comes off the cassette into the spokes in an accident, possibly snapping some spokes off, causing major damage requiring you to replace spokes and retrue the wheel, or at worst, buy a new wheel entirely is unnecessary? Please remove the spoke protector, and then tell us if all the time and effort and expense to fix the wheel if the chain chews up the spokes if it ever comes off the cassette in an accident was worth removing a $5 spoke protector. This was much better than your video on "How to assemble a bike". In this one you said "For this job". Making it individual, and not general. You just gained some respect back!
Great video! I am soon to be converting to 1x11 and I'm planning on having a chain guide, so this video is really useful for me. Would have been good to show us the BB mount technique! Maybe in another video... Cheers!! :-)
+WoD STALKER There is a puley and it does a lot a friction. I personnaly ride with only one jokey at the top, it's enough if you have a narrow wide ring imo :-)
+WoD STALKER Good question, the top guide has no extra contact however the lower guide does cause a small amount of drag but it is worth while for complete safety and piece of mind!
+Mike Probably not, I think they have just used the opportunity to shoot some maintenance videos because he has a bike that was delivered in a box and needs building and and also has parts to be put on and taken off...
It's for 1x chainrings. The front derailleur will act as the chain guide for 2x and 3x chainrings, as long as the limit screws are set correctly, no need to worry about the chain falling off. I didn't realise that your comment was already 2 years old so maybe you have already found the answer over time before I answered your question today.
2:02 What is he talking about? Why would you need to put the chain on before you put the crank on? Did I misunderstand this or is there something I don't know? Im pretty sure the cranks work and mount the same way.
+Scott Johannen you don't have to but you can (and it's easier, IMO). Some cranksets (shimano, sram among others) have the axle attached to the right hand crank such that they don't need to be properly mounted for the chainrings to be in the right place. I find it easier to put the chain on the ring and slide the axle through the BB than to go the other way around.
I have a GT Avalaunch and i removed the front derailer and took off the high and low gear since i never use them, since then i have been dropping chains. is there any other way to keep my chain besides buying a chain guide? Thanks in advance.
anyone had the Canyon Strive 7.0 and had issues to install casual ISCG03 Chainguides due the frame construction? My Sixpack Kamikaze Chainguide is ISCG03 (OLD) aswell and won't fit onto my Strive :(
how do i fit one of this chain guides if my frame does not have any places to screw on and my frame bracket is standard square tapper on. thanks for helpful answer.
Do these chain guides work with a bike that was 2X but is now 1X - but still using the 2X crank arm? Is there an issue with the Top guide lining up with the ring?
Hi there. I ride a Sram X01 with no chain guide, but I was thinking of adding one to diminish the chain shaking and heating the frame when I'm riding downhill. Does this i13 chain guide decreases the life of the chain? I wonder about it because of the tension that increases due to the lower guide. Did you change the size of the chain when you added the guide?

I've got that exact set up and can't seem to stop the friction and rubbing in the high gears when climbing. it's so bad I want to take it off. the lower guide is the main problem. what is the solution? Do I need to remove a washer?
@GLOBAL MOUNTAIN BIKE NETWORK hi how do I adjust the spacing on a mrp upper chain guide as it's rubbing the side of the chain. doesn't look to me that it's possible to install washers.

+HogBike Gold You shouldn't get laughed at for having an older or simpler bike (unless you ride with assholes). At the same time an XC hardtail is not going to be confidence inspiring for aggressive trails and may even be unsafe. XC bikes are designed for XC trails and if you push them much past that then they might be kinda sketchy to ride. Most peoples don't ride carbon but they do at least ride bikes intended for the terrain.
Limit screws on a 2x system should be able to be set with tight enough tolerances to avoid this from happening. If someone is still throwing chains with a properly adjusted front derailleur then they probably are riding terrain that a 1x system would be better ideal or necessary.
+Will Newnham it isn't a worth it or not worth it topic. if you are throwing your chain, check your high and low limit screws. If that doesn't solve the problem then you can get a chain guide but I'd look at the type of riding you're doing and consider switching to 1x

Are chain guides built for just the 1x drive train? Or do we have some for the 2x's?
It's for 1x chainrings.
The front derailleur will act as the chain guide for 2x and 3x chainrings, as long as the limit screws are set correctly, no need to worry about the chain falling off.

does a chain guide add a lot of friction to the drive train? does it 'waste' power?
+Ed Freedman very negligible for mountain bike. make sure you regularly clean the lower jockey wheel / pulley of any grime and dirt.

It shouldnt affect chain wear. They are made of plastic and only touch a little at the extreme gears. You dont need to change the chain at all.

if it's rubbing in the highest and lowest gears it's time to get the file out.
