  • In this part 1 of 2 videos, I look at all the Pokemon designs from gen 1-7 and tell you why I think they're good, bad or ugly.
This was way too much effort to make like 350 pokemon flail around the screen, but hey. That's my calling apparently.

Tentative list of things that I probably messed up in some capacity:
+Lickilicky is gen 4, so high five on me messing that one up. (I knew Carnivine was 4, I was confused by them bringing it back with no additions)
    +Gengar is poison type too!

@@TheSaltFactory I guess that makes sense, but then if Giratina is exclusive, the Rayquaza, Ho-Oh, and Lugia shouldn't count either. All 4 of these 'mons are either easier/faster to get in their own game, but also obtainable in their oposing games. The added Ultra Beasts aren't like Darkrai, Shaymin, Mew etc. The only thing that makes them exclusive is their own game and the progression system.

I'd argue that there's literally _nothing_ about Bidoof's design other than its real world species that says it's a water type. Look at Stunfisk. It's a fish, so therefore should it be water? No, no it shouldn't. Nothing about its design says water. But Bidoof? C'mon

And now that I mention it, I very much see the hypocrisy of that statement. I suppose my problem lies more in the fact that Bidoof is _literally just a beaver_ -- which isn't bad, don't get me wrong -- but every other Pokemon that uses neutral colors and looks identical to their real world counterpart is almost _always_ pure normal, at least prior to gen IV.

People should really split their videos with a pokemons design and a pokemons usefulness in battle or typing. Some pokemon are more useful in battles but that doesn't mean as a creature themselves they have no value. That's why the anime to me is so important because it can make you see something in a pokemon you didnt see in the games because they play different roles. For instance I'll never use the Regis in a game but I love them in the movie with lucario and mew as these abstract and intimidating robotic/alien creatures.

Example: You seem to chalk up Milotic’s design to “meh” because its evolution mirrors Gyarados. However you don’t acknowledge Milotic’s actually design which I feel is visually gorgeous and is suppose to mirror Gyarados’s more masculine aggressive design.

so... you'd rather have 50 Pokemon you like, over... 50 Pokemon you like and another 100 that other people, me, could like?
And the weird obsession with secondary typings... sure it can add to a design but it isn't a make or break kinda thing.
idk man, i fucking love gen 5, sure some of the designs are mega crap, Ducklett and Swanna are prime examples, but the good far out shadows the bad. I'll never understand why gen 5 always gets shat on so much when most designs are amazing and even the ones that aren't great are vast improvements on previous designs, looking at Roggenrola compared to Geodude, also Gigalith is fucking awesome looking. I've never heard anyone say they like the Tepig line, or say Tepig like you did. Complaining about Cofagrigus, a Pokemon with a strong concept and pretty good execution, and not Gengar, a "ghost", is also very confusing.
I'm not here to shit on your favourite Pokemon and i agree on many points but I'm just so sick of hearing people be mad about gen 5 designs.
"the first legendary Pokemon I liked since gen 3"... I am at a loss for words xD
Not only did gen 4 have some of the best new legendary Pokemon designs but the tao trio works remarkably well if you just look a little bit at the design inspiration and the, not to get too Rick and Morty 69420 IQ, in universe lore about the original dragon.
And i cant say this enough, MONOTYPE ISN'T BAD!!!

I was expecting something different all together. I came here with the assumption that this video would break down design theory, observe and analyze designs, give general patterns and themes found through each gen and lead an unbiased, professional walkthrough of pokémon design.
After watching the video, it left me with basically nothing.
In my opinion the video should be retitled to "My opinion on certain Pokémon from each gen". Here's why; The entire video discussed a biased and opinionated view on Pokémon as a whole. It didn't simply cover design like the title suggested. It also brought up typings, pokédex entries and stats which aren't necessary for this format where we are discussing DESIGNS. Those other factors are cheap ways to prove your points. "I don't like how the gen 2 starters have single typings". You said this in a way where it degraded the pokémon but didn't mention the design. I didn't want to here your complaining, I wanted to hear a discussion about Pokémon designs.
Now I will give credit where credit is due. I enjoyed how you mentioned simplicity in design, excessive features in designs and originality. Those are all key factors when it comes to creating a pokemon. Also the video had great editing and a genuine sense of humour. Over all, I got a good laugh out of the video but didn't leave with any sort of acquired knowledge.
Whether the objective of the video was to entertain of inform, It's partially my fault for entering the video expecting it to go a certain way with pre-conceptions. I will not give this video a like because it did a lot wrong, but I won't give it a dislike either because I can see the amount of effort put in to this video and that by itself deserves recognition.
    Have a good day.

You don't get the right to project your opinions as facts without real arguments, especially since this is an "EvalUAtIoN". In the start of the video, he says he will just look over the designs, but then starts bitching about Cofagrigus being Pure Ghost. If we start using things outside just how the Pokemon looks, it is appealing because it's supposed to be a dead person, and it's a sarcophagus, while also being an interesting new idea, a Pokemon based on a tomb.
Either you make an objective video (Which this is supposed to be) and use real arguments to support your stance (Krabby isn't very different from a real Crab and it's design is boring, Kyurem and its forms are overly designed and tiring to look at), or you make an opinion based video and then start talking about your dislikings.

Gen 1: Lots of organic shapes. Very "textured" designs (Like the rocks on Gravler, Rhydon, Golem, etc). Lots of the Pokemon look like real animals with an extra detail or two (Persian is a cat with a gem. Golduk is... a duck with a gem. Bulbasaur is a frog with a plant.) Very 90's anime eyes (Lots of Pokemon had the same 'DBZ'-style eyes). The Pokemon that weren't just "animal + element", however, were completely alien looking. Electabuzz, Magmar, Mewtwo, Jigglypuff... They looked more like generic "monsters" than being based off of any one animal, if that makes sense.
Gen 2: Actually was confirmed a lot of Gen 2 'Mons were just scrapped Gen 1 designs. So a lot of them look like Gen 1, some even look more simple. Very few stripes, spikes, or added random details. Very simple coloring scheme, most Pokemon just having 2 or 3 colors. Lots of smooth textured Pokemon, but still some organic looking stuff in there. A lot more "animal + element"-style designs in Gen 2 compared to 'Mons that just look completely unlike anything else. Much brighter colors, though.
Gen 3: A noticeable shift away from organic shapes, but not entirely. Designs overall had more details on them, more stripes, spikes, dots, doo-dads, etc. Not necessarily bad. A lot of people claimed Gen 3 Pokemon "didn't look like Pokemon" when it came out. Probably due to the style shift. Very experimental designs. Lots of Pokemon with new and interesting eye variants. Very... exotic color choices, for some Pokemon. Others, mostly grey's and brown's. Overall a huge mixed bag.
Gen 4: Wildly different from anything before. Lots of the designs feel "plastic", lacking _any_ organic shapes or texture. Lots of the Pokemon were _covered_ head-to-toe in details, doo-dads, and patterns. Clear design shift away from making the Pokemon look like "natural" creatures, and more like unique characters (this would be confirmed years later as intentional). Lots of more edgy, more traditionally "cool" designs. Designs overall feel a little more "cluttered" than in previous generations, not necessarily bad, but definitely true.
Gen 5: A callback to Gen 1, which was intentional. Lots of more organic designs and textures, lots of unique eyes (I just care about this a lot for some reason, okay?) Much less "over-detailing" than in Gen 5, though on some Pokemon it's still there a bit. Designs seem more... focused, I guess? Like Gravler and Onix were just, "Rock monster", but Roggenrola's line feels like "Rock monster, but with a unique twist." Not as many designs that look like generic RPG enemies, I guess. Designs are MUCH more colorful and diverse in themes. Sort of a mixed bag like Gen 3, though.
Gen 6: Tons of unique designs. Not everyone liked them, but most of the designs from this Gen were definitely new ideas that haven't really been done before. A nice mix of organic designs and more "robotic/plastic-y" designs. Some insanely cool ideas, like a squid Pokemon that's upside down, or a Halloween-themed pumpkin ghost that's base evolution also resembles a black cat. Lots of hit-or-miss designs in terms of reception, but I think that's because so many of the designs were just... not what anyone was used to. And I think that's good for something, at least.
Gen 7: A return of mostly organic-looking Pokemon! And also some amazing Alolan forms, which to me felt more like "reworked" Gen 1 Pokemon, as opposed to alternate forms. Lots of patterning and extra details and an INCREDIBLY bright color scheme, but it all feels welcomed given the tropical setting. Definitely a strong focus on making each Pokemon feel unique, while also making them believable "creatures" that could exist naturally. Lots of inspiration from real animals and legends! Which means less 'Mons that just look like generic monsters, but that's okay too!
Gen 8: Definitely a mixed bag for some people. I think it may be in part to having to learn new technology, but a lot of the designs here felt _really_ plastic-y. Most of these Pokemon look like action figures, with very little detailing or texture-work done. Again, I think it's because they were designed _around_ the technology, not designed first, then added in later. More of a focus on making designs look "popular". Not exactly "cool", per say, but many of them are exaggerated tropes or heavily stylized based on, mainly, European culture. Lots of details on some of them, that many have described as looking like "stickers put on to an otherwise feature-less Pokemon", which I can see. I don't hate them, but they don't feel like any of the previous Gens' Pokemon.

Just having more types doesn’t make a Pokémon well designed. For example you overlooked Cofagrigus because he’s not part rock when it’s simply a fascinating Pokémon in concept alone.
In my opinion, a Pokémon is well designed when you can tell me the name and show me a picture of it and I can imagine how it would act if it existed in the real world. One thing about gen 1 Pokémon designs is that they had limitations on what creatures they could create and express clearly through sprites. Without color, I’m sure some of gamefreaks scrapped Pokémon concepts were because they couldn’t design sprites that were clear as to what the person was looking at. And the anime came after the games, so they couldn’t rely on that.

I swear, the amount of times that "dual typing automatically makes a pokemon more unique" really gets tiring to hear, and not to mention it just is not true, I feel. A pokemon can be unique in design and still be monotype, frankly. If thr games were filled with mostly dual types, it would be an unforgiving hellscape of pokemon losing their identities to split designs all over. After all, it is what happened to the bug flying typing, normal flying. Like, there are only so many type combinations you can make look interesting and cool so many times.
Overall, man, I just REALLY don't like this video because you just seem to contradict yourself in a large number of ways and don't really give much consistent attention. It's fine if you have your own opinions, and if you feel dual typings are better than singles, that's your opinion, even if I don't feel it would be for the best. However, your reasonings and critiques are barely ever consistent. It's nothing against your opinions at all, man, or about "my generation being offended," just...get some consistency for your opinions, man, otherwise trying to discern your opinions on stuff overall is like trying to follow the shape of a 5-way-tied pretzel.

I believe this video should have covered how old boring pokemon designs were improved upon in later generations, you could also bash gamefreak for their lazy 3d animations while doing so, win win!
    What's wrong with machamp's arms??
There is an apparent bias towards Dual Typings in this video, which would be fine if you explained WHY you love dual typings so much.
I don't understand why pokemon based on similar animals/groups of animals are bad, why is tailow bad because pidgey exists? I see you are quite fixated on typings, but they DON'T have to be different types to be unique. In the case of seviper, it is far stronger than an ekans, and has a different design which I love. Everyone has their preferences, but you need to explain your preference for me to understand the points you propose.
The way you throw pokemon in categories of "This! This pokemon did it first!" reminds me of IGN branding every game "The Dark souls of X", just because they share a quality does not mean they can't be unique.
I understand that you may not have USED every pokemon you talk about, but it's best to actually find their types first, I'm honestly shocked you didn't find that gengar line had sub-poison from searching for the images.
Overall, a few points made in the video did impress me, but I really did dislike the rest of them, you need to explain "why" more.
