      Gen 9/paldea is My Favorite Current Region in Terms Of Pokémon Designs, The Pokémon introduced in Gen 9 Were Awesome, koraidon & miraidon Were My Favorite Legendary Pokémon, PLUS OVERALL My Favorite Pokémon introduced in Gen 9. They're Awesome & Have Awesome Design & Lore Of Being Legendary Dragon Types From The Past & The Future. They Are The Best Boxart Legendaries Design Wise. The Concept Of Paradox Pokémon is Awesome. But it’s Hard To Find A Bad Pokémon Design Besides A Few, quaquaval is My Least Favorite Starter in Gen 9, The Design is My Least Favorite, dudunsparce is so not creative for An EVOLVED FORM Of A Gen 2 Pokémon, Just Adds A New Segment and it’s a New Pokémon Now. And dudunsparce SHOULD HAVE BEEN NORMAL/DRAGON Type & Have A More Unique Design From its PRE EVOLVED FORM. Another Pokémon That is Boring For Me is squawkabilly, squawkabilly is One Of My Least Favorite Pokémons in Gen 9. A Bad Designed Pokémon. Other Than Those Two, The Roster Of New Pokémon Were Awesome, koraidon & miraidon Were My Favorite Boxart Legendary Pokémon, Their Designs Were Awesome, Being Ancient Dragons From The Distant Past & Robotic Future Dragon From The Far Future it’s Awesome & An Easy God Tier For Me, Other Awesome Pokémons Like
      chien-pao Which is My Favorite Sub-Legendary Pokémon introduced in Gen 9, baxcalibur is Now One Of My Favorite Pseudo Legendary Pokémon Ever, it’s Design is Awesome. Reminds Me of godzilla. And skeledirge is My Favorite Fire Type Starter Pokémon. And meowscarada is My Favorite Grass Type Starter, tatsugiri is Cute, Yet Strong At The Same Time, it’s Design is Awesome Too, A Sushi Dragon is Dope. So it’s kinda hard to find a Bad Designed Pokémon in Gen 9 Cause Most Of Them Were Awesome.

    24:16 I think Enamorus' lipstick marking is also based on the mouth tattoos of Ainu women (a practice which was done to repel demons of disease), which is why it points out at the sides.

    While I have no interest in using Sawk and Throh, I actually like their goofy Muppet vibe. Considering the Muppets originate from America, it kinda works. The positive feelings I get when looking at the Muppets transfers to these two. I actually like most of the Unova Pokémon. I think the worst of 4th gen is Lickilicky. I don't get what they were thinking making that the evolution to Likitung, how? It basically went from elephant/rhino featured humanoid thing with a stupidly long toungue that looked as formidable as it does goofy and endearing and they basically de-evolved it wall-e style, making it's features much softer and stumpier. I get that it's rotund from overeating I guess, but that's a concept that could be better explored in better ways I feel, like maybe let it retain some definition in it's legs at least instead of making them look like they'll buckle the second they hop off a mobility scooter.

    I think some of your criticisms like ‘lack of pattern’ is less intense than you make it out to be. I’ve noticed you add a lot of unnecessary patterns to convey a type just to fill up a blank space. Pawmot and Sneasler do not need added patterns. That would not change any of the other complaints you had about them, and might even make them too cluttered to be creature designs.

    Regarding Eternatus, here is its Shield Pokedex description: "It was inside a meteorite that fell 20,000 years ago. There seems to be a connection between this Pokémon and the Dynamax phenomenon."
    So yeah, it's not a ton of backstory but I think alien biology gives us a pass on the non-standard design, especially considering it's entirely responsible for gen 8's gimmick. This thing needed to look both otherworldly and powerful and *boy* did they achieve that with Eternatus in my opinion.

    I am the BIGGEST Slurpuff defender out there. It's a silly little dog thing made out of desserts, which I think isn't even CLOSE to a bad concept. It's not exactly intimidating and it's not the cutest thing in the dex, but i feel like so many people hate on it purely because it has to be associated with Aromatisse. Slurpuff also has one of my favorite color schemes out of all the pokemon. Pink, white and red is a great color combo and i wish that people could appreciate this silly little pokemon with the respect it deserves.

    Really wish there was some lore that Eternatus is an Ultra Beast. Would have 100% made its design and G-max form make more sense for its odd and yet badass appearance. Like it wrecked havoc on another world and got beaten and banished into the SwSh world. Then when it reawakened it brought about the first Darkest Day, and really hammers home why G-max/D-max is incredibly foreign to just Galar as it’s origins of power are from another dimension! :D

  • @RoninCatholic
    @RoninCatholic Před 9 měsíci +85

    The thing about the Krabby/Crabrawler comparison wasn't that Krabby was a better design, but that the technical skill and the flavor put into the older concept art made these creatures look like _living creatures_ while all the rounder shapes lacking roughness in newer versions of what should be anatomically similar creatures make them look more like plastic toys.

    • @ShirotheWiseWolf

      Yeah, a big thing that needs to be addressed when talking about gen 1 and 2, is outside of the original gameboy versions, their designs all change so much, i love the original art, they had such character and emotion i don't dislike the gba versions of them, but it simplified them and made them "cleaner" and transitioning to 3d, they lost so much of there depth and soul, making a lot of them look basic and boring. which i don't think is fair to their original sprites :')

    • @firstwaddledee9182
      @firstwaddledee9182 Před 9 měsíci +49

      Well, it’s more that it had a lot of design aspects and almost none of them made it through in the design. Visually, nothing about it say’s plague doctor, perfume, flamingo, or masquerade. And on top of that, it adds in a cancan dancer aspect which doesn’t really mesh with the other design concepts. I’m personally fine with the design but I have to admit that it isn’t a good one.

    As I did during the stream, I'd like to defend Herdier.
    It looks like a policeman due to the colour scheme, which is logical as it is used by the police in the Unova region. Its Pokédex entry refers to the fur on its back as impervious to damage. It is clearly based on a bullet-proof vest. It could also be a reference to a superhero's cape, which also makes sense since the US is known for its superhero comics. A lot of those heroes are depicted as living in New York (which is what Unova is based on) or a city that has clear inspiration from New York. Police are a form of heroes, so there's a connection there as well.
    The moustache and eyebrows may be based on a terrier, but they also allude to a stern human man who's giving you a look of disapproval, sort of like a disapproving father. 👨 Its entry mentions that it can help its trainer raise their other Pokémon, which is probably a reference to that. This also ties in with it being a herding dog as they help their owners with taking care of farm animals.
    As for not being as interesting as it potentially could be, that's the case for a lot of Normal-type Pokémon. I would, in fact, say that it's a standard trait for a lot of them. The Meowth line (literally just cats with forehead decor), the Litleo line (although it ties in fire, it still looks like a relatively normal lion), etc. Also, most birds who are part Normal are very simple and similar to their real-life counterparts. Pidgie is the most obvious example.
    Then again, what makes sense to me doesn't make sense to everyone, so there's that.

      Yeah... Herdier might seem basic, but it's a solid design! It also adds up ad it has moustaches growing, which continue to grow when it evolves into a Stoutland! Herdier is a good design, and Herdier makes me feel i can trust him, and, design-wise, i sometimes prefer him over his evolution Stoutland, which has these big moustaches after evolving from Herdier, but the Sun and Moon anime made Stoutland popular because of the Litten episode. But i can see why some people may think Herdier is too basic!!! I still think that, design-wise, it's still better then other Pokemom!!!

It can be both cute and tough, as seen in its official art. It looks very friendly, but can beat you up. Its hands being like those electrical pads doctors use is very clever given it learns Revival Blessing

    My personal opinions on why certain choices aren't that good:
    -Krabby's design takes the general crab as we know it and puts cute eyes on top, while using the bi-color shell as a line for the mouth. It resembles a crab superficially for a reason.
    -Sunflora exemplifies the 'happy sunflower' trope as a character. The design is fine for what they were going for: It's simple and cute. Too much more would ruin it.
    -Oh come on, Herdier is fine. Again, it's simple and cute.
    -Palpitoad looks like it's between two evolutions? I wonder why? Sounds like the design is perfect and this is just being nitpicky.
    -Crabominable looks terrible and absolutely horrible. I hate it. It should be #1 for that gen.
    -Sneasler looks fine imo. It's made to climb mountains and gives the look of a punk assassin, which fits its personality.
    -Tandemous are supposed to look simple because their entire theme and their UNIQUE MOVE is based on multitudes. They're all supposed to look extremely similar to each other. They are legion.
    -The Pawmi line keep a consistent theme and get fluffier and taller as they evolve. Each one looks more and more like a dumb fluffy friend and I contest that it fits them perfectly.

    couldnt disagree more on eternatus, it’s one of my favourite pokemon designs and i think its concept is executed exceptionally well. it’s an otherworldly, skeletal dragon, built of shapes unfamiliar to the life on our world, yet still having the motif of a grasping skeletal hand. the whole point is that it’s unsettling and doesn’t feel like it should exist, it’s a terror from beyond the stars. if you can defend pokemon by saying “that’s the concept it was going for”, then im doing that for my boy eternatus.

    Gonna go to bat for the Paldea-mons here:
    - Bramblin I don't think is any more basic than like a Morelull or Bounsweet. All are simple plantlike creatues who are small and cute.
    - Squawkabilly's whole thing is that they form large gangs, so I can't really imagine what a huge flock of them would look like if they all had these intricate patterns. Would probably look way too busy is what I'm thinking.
    - Bellibolt's mascot-like appearance is kinda the point. It's the signature Pokemon of the egirl. Think of all the cute animal emotes on livestreaming platforms, they don't all have the most realistic animal proportions. Bellibolt also takes inspiration from the famous Pacman frog, a round little blob of an animal with stubby little limbs, and this connection with Pacman further ties back into the mascot aesthetic.
    - I've heard a theory that the Pawmi line is based on a shonen anime character arc. Pawmi is when the protagonist is at their youngest and weakest, no training whatsoever. Think Child Goku. As Pawmi trains, it evolves into Pawmo. Since training, its gotten a lot stronger, actually developing something of a fighting style, hence gaining the Fighting-type. It's the same Pawmi we all know and love, just a little more mature and capable. Upon finishing its training, Pawmo evolves into Pawmot. Its golden hair now spikes upward akin to a Super Saiyan, and its larger muscles allude to its higher power level. Despite all the increases in power and combat ability though, it's still the same Goku / Pawmi / other protagonist we know and love. I mean they did make this line the signature Pokemon of Nemona, who has all the energy of a Goku-type character.
    I love the designs from Scarlet and Violet all around. They weren't afraid to push the envelope.

    Lumineon isn’t even boring at least by the standards of fish Pokémon. It incorporates the concepts of both deep sea and reef fish and is also a pun on “butterflyfish” having fins that are actually butterfly like (as opposed to real butterflyfish, which look more like angelfish or similar reef fish.) It has a mix of concepts and is actually pretty interesting, apart from its typing. That’s its one flaw, they should’ve given it fairy type in gen 6. Would’ve fit well since it’s bioluminescence would be fitting of moves like moonlight, moonblast, and dazzling gleam. Also fairies are depicted often with butterfly wings so that ties the connection together. Would’ve made this Pokémon stand out more like it deserves to, because it is interesting. But with VERY bad stats, a mono type of the most common type in the game, and stuck at the end of the gen 4 dex, I see why people overlook it so much. It deserves so much better.

    I mostly agree with the earlier ones. A lot of your picks for gen 3 and 4, I actually like, especially the bugs, though I guess a lot of what I like about them is situational more than anything I objectively admire about their designs. As for ambipom, I was going to say that the nose may be a reference to a snub-nosed monkey, but considering the main concept of aipom is to be an exaggeration of a prehensile tail, it doesn't even make that much sense to add old-world monkey design elements. And I'd actually say taillow looks even more like just a cartoon bird than pidgey, which, as you mentioned, doesn't look exactly like any specific bird, while taillow's pretty much a one-to-one with an actual swallow.
    I actually like enamorus, and am to this day pretty strongly convinced that people are biased against it due to its being shown as a 3d model first rather than as a drawing, as just about any other pokémon is. I see the seemingly incongruous design elements as suitable for it as the Love Hate Pokémon, hence its combining pretty characteristics with unappealing ones. I guess bruxish is also kind of meant to have that flashy-yet-unappealing look to it, so I'd say it's debatable that it qualifies due to its arguably hitting the mark it was going for by not looking particularly attractive, even if a lot of its features are traditionally used as pretty signifiers. I'd say a comparable pokémon that probably does fail design-wise is jynx, considering its origin of a mountain hag means its design elements evoking seductiveness don't really suit that origin, though I actually kind of like jynx too, albeit mostly in a so-bad-it's-good sort of way.
    And while I mostly can agree regarding gen 9, I don't think shroodle can be called poorly designed, considering it's a pretty clever idea to make the unevolved form of the graffiti-artist pokémon look just like Kilroy (a classic graffiti drawing), plus, being a poison type, it can pull off not being all that cute, and its clipping teeth is less a problem with its design than it is with the cheap, rushed graphics of the game it's in.
    Pretty good video, I definitely enjoy all the thought put into it.

    Flamigo should absolutely be a full entry instead of a dishonorable mention. It is just a flamingo with cartoonish proportions. It does not look like a punching glove, no matter what people say. If it was intentional, it would be more obvious. It being a balloon animal would make sense if it actually looked like it was made of plastic instead of being a normal bird. Also, being a "garden flamingo" is not a defense. A garden flamingo is just a decoration that looks like a flamingo. Flamigo is not a decoration, it is a living thing.

    I think the Kling line partially exists just to show off gen 5’s new graphics. As Kling the gears spin at a steady pace, but Klang’s larger gear slows them down. The new gear added to Klingklang speeds them back up to regular speed.
    Still don’t think it justifies the design. If you wanna show off your graphics, make a good design to show them off with instead of a tech demo with eyes.

    • @JacobPDeIiNoNi
      @JacobPDeIiNoNi Před 9 měsíci +2

      I strongly disagree, pika clones being one stage is a good thing. The point of them is to be cute and relatively simple, which is fitting for one stage pokemon. Because if you try to incorporate more stages while still making them cute and simple, it’s really difficult to add things. Leading to a pawmo situation where it just stands up. Quality over quantity, I’d rather have fewer evolutions that are actually distinct rather than ones that barely change for the sake of it.

      @@JacobPDeIiNoNi But here's the thing - we've had too many two stage or one-stage Pika clones. It's like the Fire-Fighting deal that started around Gen 5 or the more human full-evos debate that started around Gen 7: they're getting repetitive.

    • @JacobPDeIiNoNi
      @JacobPDeIiNoNi Před 8 měsíci

      @@GlitchanBlack For me, saying we’ve had too many of them just because it’s the standard feels like an arbitrary reason to have a 3 stage line when one clearly was not needed. The issue with trends like fire fighting is that they stifled creativity and variety within the designs. I would agree pika clones do the same, except that pawmo and pawmot are evidence for the opposite, two evolutions one of which barely changes, and the other only a little. Functionally pawmi’s evolutions change so little about it’s design that there’s no reason for it NOT to be one stage. Again I agree that we should get pika clones who aren’t one stage, or at least I would if those evolutions were interesting. But otherwise there’s no point but to break a trend, a trend that doesn’t need to be broken if the only designs it was restricting are lackluster ones like pawmo and pawmot.

    I don't think that Ambipom looks creepy. I think it's overhated and that it just became a trend hating on it.
    Saw and Throw are are also onis and they even reference the japanese tale of the red and blue oni. And they also have some war propaganda references (japan used onis of those colors to represent USA during the war). And sesame street was made in the same city that inspired the games. Not to mention that two presidents were the ones that pretty much introduced Karate and Judo as a sport in the US.
    I like how the gears move in the klingklang line. It makes sense for the gear mechanism go get more complex as it evolves since that's exactly what happens with machines the more complex they are.
    I like Crabominable, it reminds me of the ice king from adventure time.
    I think the gen 8 pokemon mentioned have interesting designs and way more personality than many other pokemon and represent very well ehat they're supposed to be. I literally have no problem with their designs. The same goes with Eternatus.Eternatus looks menacing and dangerous. It nails being looking like a pokemon that could cause a world ending cataclism.
    By the way, Coalossal was NEVER meant to be a train. It's concept is thigns related to coal. That's why the first stage is a piece of coal with a miner cap, the second stage is a cart full of coal, the third stage is a literal coal monster that carries coal like a miner and the gmax form is the entire coal mine with a giant furnace for the case. Heck, even its pokedex entry is a reference to a very harsh winter were coal was extremely need in UK. And the shiny version is a reference to the color of certain kind of high quality coal.
