  • HMX-1 is the Presidential support squadron based at
Quantico, Virginia. Secondary missions include administrative
support for Headquarters Marine Corps in and around the
Washington, DC area; administrative and tactical support for the
Marine Corps Combat Development Command; and operational testand evaluation of rotary wing aircraft. Only Marine Corps Officers with strict security clearances may apply to fly with HMX-1.

I had a fellow Marine buddy test for HMX-1 and they accepted him and we all knew he would go and they'd take him. He was one of those super cool and super squared away Marines. Every Marine eventually meets one of those kind of Marines. Ya know, runs a 300pft, high pro/cons, wins every board he goes on and doesnt come off thinking your below him. Thats the kinda Marines that are at HMX1 yuut

The VH-60N Whitehawk, is used for overseas travel as the VH-3D is too difficult to transport. They have to pretty much remove the whole top part of the helicopter to get it to fit. The Whitehawk is easier as it squats low enough and can be readied faster on the other end. The Navy still uses UH-1Ns called Cotton Tops but these are used for Admirals and other officials. The reason that a Bell has not been used, is because since the first purpose built Executive Transport was built, it has been a Sikorsky helicopter. Sikorsky has been flying the POTUS for 60 years now.

(Recognizing full well this is the USMC’s official account as I post this) the entirety of USASOC, 82nd ABN, 101st ABN, and a host of other units would be rather surprised to hear that they are a ‘backup’ organization. Different organizations exist for different missions. Let’s say you hypothetically have a rapidly unfolding crisis in the pacific rim, a rapidly deployable expeditionary organization with robust internal air assets like the Marines would be just the ticket. Let’s say you have the real prospect of a high intensity ground conflict in Eastern Europe erupting against a near-peer threat...that mission set has an organization like an Armored Brigade Combat Team from 1st Cavalry Division written all over it. An airfield in a denied enemy held area needs to be seized so the US can rapidly expand a lodgment and flow in follow on forces to expand their combat power in the area? A Brigade of the 82nd ABN is just what the doctor ordered.
