How I Overcame My Fear of Public Speaking | Danish Dhamani | TEDxKids@SMU

  • Communication is the most important skill for personal and professional success. In this talk, Danish Dhamani discusses how overcoming your fear of public speaking is key to leading a fulfilling life and unlocking your true potential. Danish’s vision is to empower everyone around the world to overcome their fear of public speaking and to become a better communicator. As a first generation immigrant, for whom English is a second language, the fear of public speaking haunted Danish throughout his early life. By constant practicing and coaching, he soon realized that people are not born public speakers; instead public speaking is a learn-able skill. This is what inspired Danish to create Orai, a mobile app that uses artificial intelligence to improve your speaking ability. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

The problem is that no one really gets it. Everyone thinks that you just have to talk and get over it, but it’s not like that. Every single time I have to go to class and I know I have to talk because my grade is on the line, or simply the thought of having to talk terrifies me. It has completely taken over my life, i am constantly shaking and my heart beats so fast it feels like it’s going to get out of my chest, I get so red and nobody understands it. Nobody gets how ashamed I feel because I can’t get myself to do something that seems so easy but it’s so difficult for me. Anyways, thanks for coming to my ted talk.

Today I had a public speaking in front of 600 people and I failed miserably. When i came into that stage, my mind was covered blank instantly. And when I was having a hard time giving a speech, I paused constantly, lost my speech started to talk non - sense. Although, I knew today I wasn't prepared enough and that I have learned how the public speaking works in front of 100s of people. Even though I lost my speech, I turned this horrific experience to a large and best opportunity and lesson I could get in my life. I know it sounds crazy, I left my emotions flow for many hours then I ended up being positive with myself. I gained huge amount of confidence after my embarrassing experience of todays speaking in front of a crowd. I got an opportunity to understand how I must react, settle my self, emotions and how I must be very prepared for my public speech. I don't know why, but it was embarassing and weirdly I feel very happy about the fact that I failed and analysed my faults.

Make sure your speech has sub headings and practice each part, over and over again until you have a pretty good idea of what you’re talking about. Now after that you want to record yourself saying the full speech and then listen to the recording of your voice each night or whenever you want to practise. It helps so much. I also have the fear of public speaking. I from a country where our native language is not English. But in our colleges we are asked to give our presentation in English. And, I am not good at english so it makes me feel anxious to talk. I start to shiver, my heart starts pounding, then I get blank. However, I believe I can make it someday. So, I want to tell you all that its okay if you are not good at it, but do not stop there, keep trying...

Heartwarming knowing I'm not the only one suffering with a public speaking fear - that "over to you"/spotlight moment is horrific and kickstarts a whirlwind of physical and mental symptoms that I, at the moment, am unable to suppress/manage. Work have been great about it, but there's nothing that lifts the soul like reading and listening to likeminded individuals. You're all super brave. We've got this!

One of my students told me that when he discussed his anxieties with someone close to him, like his wife or a close friend, then he found that the moment he started opening up to them, the anxiety decreased-even before he received any advice or support.
Togetherness definitely decreases anxiety. There is a saying in the wisdom of Kabbalah that “a sorrow shared is a sorrow halved,” i.e. when we share a sensation, we divide it up, and in turn it becomes more manageable.
Since it is quite easy to see how sharing our experiences lessens our negative feelings, the question is why do we not use this ability more? Why is it so hard for us to share our fears and anxieties with others?
We are indeed afraid of opening our hearts, letting everyone see that we have certain fears and anxieties. That is, in addition to whatever fears and anxieties we hold within, we usually have additional anxieties about sharing them with others, that it might cause others to perceive us as weak. Since society in general values stronger, smarter, wealthier and fitter individuals, opening up our anxieties to such a society makes us vulnerable to exploitation. We thus need to seek a social environment that would not exploit us for opening up, but would rather give us a sense of faith and confidence that it can help us cope with any negative feelings.
A social setting that can guarantee faith and confidence in its members is one that actively draws itself to the upper good and benevolent force-the force of love, bestowal and connection. It is this very same force that awakens negative feelings in us, whether they be fears, anxieties or several other painful sensations, in order for us to draw closer to that force, and we do so by drawing closer to each other.
If we wish to connect with the upper force and let its perfect quality of love, bestowal and connection fill our lives with a sensation of faith and confidence, then we need to emulate such a quality toward other people-giving them a sense of faith and confidence, and for them to do the same toward us. By wanting to positively connect with others, we then start awakening the positive force dwelling in nature into the connections we create, and we then feel a new sense of faith and confidence wash away any anxieties that we might be holding within.

I have a presentation next Tuesday to the whole school. Often, I feel like I can do it when I speak to myself, but then a nagging thought pops up in my mind the next moment and says, "No, you can't. You can't even speak confidently enough to your class, let alone to the whole school." I'm not... unprepared. Whenever I look at my teacher, she gives me a sense of relief and looking at everyone else with their gloomy faces jumbles up my mind. It's just that my mind goes blank and my words tangle like strings and the information that stores in my brain all disappear. I also want to do TED talks one day, you know, to share my experience with the people who want to hear. But, I aspire to be like this man. I'm only fourteen with so much else to do, often ostracising myself for every little thing but I journal a lot so yeah. Well, time to do my best.

I think from what I've experienced, many times it's because we're afraid of being judged by the people listening to our speech, and we lose our confidence 💔 this also means we are giving those people our power and energy. I've done this countless times and still do it and I'm just thinking that if we can get past that part of putting those people above us and not care about their opinions then maybe presentations and public speaking would be easier.

And the ridicule got worse each year into high school and college.
I'm doing my Ph.D. degree now and I have gotten a better hold of my anxiety. I have realized the way forward is to do things that make you happy, have a positive frame of mind and if possible, to take up leadership positions - to put myself in front of everyone else to build the person I want to be.
