A little history...when first introduced, some cars had a solid roof panel that would open and retract and that was called a "sunroof." In 1973, Lincoln Continental introduced a tinted glass panel that opened and retracted and marketed it as a "moonroof". I would say the terms are interchangeable today.

My understanding is that a sunroof is a glass panel in the roof that may or may not open, but allows light in. A moonroof is a metal panel that opens to allow sunlight into the cabin but eclipses the sun when closed.

To clarify, Honda is investing $15 billion of its own money. Canada is putting in $2.5 bil via tax credit and Ontario is putting in the same. Total is $5 bil from governments. 1,000 more jobs at the upgraded Alliston plant but it was not disclose the amount of jobs for the other 2 plants Honda is building in Ontario. This deal does not mimic the IRA.

My understanding of the difference between a sunroof and moonroof is as follows. The Sunroof is a panel that forms a cohesive appearance with the rest of the roof. You can't see through a sunroof. It can slide into the roof or can be completely removed. Moonroofs are made of tinted glass and are transparent. Modern cars mostly have moonroofs or panoramic moonroofs. The first Sunroof was a 1937 Nash, and the first Moonroof was a 1973 Lincoln Continental Mark IV.

  • @robbilton9006
    @robbilton9006 Před měsícem

Re moonroof vs sun roof. If you go back to the olden days. Sun roofs were small and most were just tilt. All were glass.
The first moonroof I remember was the 83 Toyota space cruiser. (Hiace minivan) That had a tilt sunroof at the front and a huge slide moonroof at the back.
If you roadtrip inland come have a coffee stop in Abbotsford.

Actually I believe to be technical, a sunroof is what some older 80’s cars had where it was a metal panel that opened. Once they became glass they were technically moonroofs because you could see the moon through them at night. However, today both terms are used interchangeably.

Streamer in the UK boought an Porshe EV for something like 100K pounds. Two years later he decides to upgrade due to improvements in range and charging. Porshe dealer not interested in taking it as a trade in on the new car. Best price he could get was around 55K pounds. That didn't even cover the fiancing left of his original car. Poor example but it shows how resale values can drop due to changes in tech. Leason learned? Leasing an EV is the way to go until there is more stability in the market.

Going back at least a couple decades, I think manufacturers, people started calling it a moonroof when they went glass, opening or not. That's not a hard and fast rule; as been suggested they really are used rather interchangeably. But I think that's where the new(er) moonroof term came from.

    • @autobreza7131
      @autobreza7131 Před měsícem

Correct. The opening roof sections were all called sunroofs until Lincoln (and others) started using tinted glass opening panels around 1972. The terms are now pretty much used interchangeably given the timeline.

I wonder if those who do use the term “moonroof” have sunroofs which automatically retract the shade when opening. That would make the sunroof appear to operate like past moonroof designs. I remember my old Toyota XA30 would retract the shade however my Mini R56 doesn’t. Interesting…

Ppl are short in $$ and unless the EVs manage somehow, magically, to overcome their shortcomings, develop the technology further and also become more affordable they will probably be still something most people won't consider anytime soon.

I'd rather not have a payment then keep leases (nowadays the only way to get $$ off EV MSRP is through lease incentives). I save a bit towards my next car purchase each month after I get a new car. Over a number of years, the savings method works as long as I start saving even a bit immediately. And I'll own the car eventually.

A factory with 1000 workers doesn't mean it only benefits that 1000 people. Usually a lot of works in that factory will flow to smaller factories as sub-contract works. And people benefit directly or indirectly from these factories in turn will help other businesses to grow by circulating their salaries. That's why the governments are willing to spend billions of dollars to bring these high-paid jobs to their own countries.

My dodge durango 2016 just broke down and I started hating it.
I left it at the office and went home with my friend. Now I am thinking of just getting rid of it
It is cranking up but not starting I believe it might be fuel pump and it also has ticking sound which could be enginer lifters sound which is a common issue with dodge.
    What should I get ?
Chevy traverse is still not available in my country and I do not like 4 cylinders
Grand highlander is not available also and the normal highlander sucks
    Ford explorer seems outdated
VW teramout is not bad (but also 4 cylinders) and no dealership is in my city which would be hard to maintain
    CX90? hmmm
Honda Pilot I bought one in 2016 which I kept for 1 month then sold it, I did not like it
Kia telluride looks nice but I don't think kia is reliable and I usually keep my car for over 10 years
Should I just finance a new car or just fix the damn Durango :(

    Moonroof incorrect, sunroof incorrect
Many years ago , my 5 year old niece asked to open the 'Skyroof' , probably the most correct description
Every time you use it, you see the sky - 24/7

You are wrong about sunroof, it's what you call moonroof, sunroof, you open on sunny days for ventilation, moonroof started in Japan, I believe Nissan was the first, it was several paneled roof, to see the moonlight and stars.

👍🏼 A sun roof is a removable piece of glass or metal than is kept in the trunk or garage. All but gone. A moon roof is what we are a custom to today. A retractable portion of the roof.

I had a grown woman, in her mid 50s, come up to me 15 minutes before the eclipse in Austin TX and asked me if it was okay to wear her sunglasses to look at the sun as the solar eclipse happened. I was incredulous. I said calmly said (which was really hard to do), "No you shouldn't look at the solar eclipse with your sunglasses. If you do, e you'll end up with permanent eye damage or be forever blinded."

Honda received $5B ($2.5 Provincial Conservatives and $2.5 Federal Liberals) to build four production plants for battery manufacturing and EV assembly. Not $15B. Honda received the least in tax dollars but is making the largest investment in Ontario.

    • @andreaspencer9813

Isn't that what we said? Honda is investing 15 billion dollars. What we didn't add is The Federal and Ontario governments are both providing 2.5 billion in direct and indirect incentives.

    • @CoolTatts

@@andreaspencer9813yes you shared that Honda was making an investment but then Zack went on (5:50) to add “so why is this happening” and spoke about the IRA in the US and the Canadian government matching this by seeding these industries with tax dollars and then the number of jobs our tax dollars are creating. Saying for 1000 jobs it seems expensive. Which implies the dollar amount shared is what the government is seeding. I was just clarifying our tax dollars weren’t the number shared and that it was both Provincial (Conservative) and Federal (Liberal) investments.
Notice the comments you’re getting about people angry with the government ‘spending our tax dollars’. This is a polarizing topic in Canada, as you know.

I can't even buy an MX-5 around here, well, unless I want to deal with the worlds scummiest car dealer chain. They're charging $47k+ for a GS! Nothing unusual for these guys. Other dealers within 200kms hardly ever get them in, and when they do, they're automatics, RFs, ugly colours (gray, poop brown). I've pretty much given up, getting too old anyway to be trying to hunt one of these down.
