God I'm so scared for that Mayor woman. So much bravery but in such a dangerous place. Please be safe.
She is a journalist.
Fuck, you guys are correct, my bad.
Yeah, the thousand other male mayors have it so easy right
Dr Corico it's not that male politicians are in any less danger. Bit let's be real here, some would not stop at just killing her. It actually happened with a woman in Colombia I think.
INB4 she’s murdered and her snuff film surfaces from the Deep Web.
Like clockwork
I absolutely love Mexicans! They're my favorite country. Every Mexican I've ever met has been genuinely sweet and kindhearted. I wish them the best of luck!
I am a 68 year
old man who was born in Ohio and had only lived in on other place before last August (Florida for the past five years).
I have never had anything against Latinos (or blacks or Asians or anyone else) in my life. I have lived in San Jose, the capital city of Costa Rica for most of the past 11 months, and I have grown to appreciate Latinos in particular much more than I ever thought I would. There are lots of immigrants here from other countries in Central America, and lots of ex-pats from the USA who live here as well.
Of coyrse there are social problems here: such problems exist anywhere human beings exist. But it is a democracy and generally life is good.
Is the goverment corrupt? Sure. All governments are to at least some extent: the nature of the beast is that "Power corrupts".
But in autocratic countries where a single person IS essentially the government, you have to add the last part of the maxim I quoted above to the discourse, and that is that "Absolute power corrupts absolutely".
Most of he corrupt money infesting this country's coffers comes from laundering drug money for the drug cartels in South America. But most of the populace is willing to overlook that as long as their lives and moderately high standard of living are preserved. That is the local "Social Contract".
Very, very few Costa Ricans even attempt to emigrate to the USA, because many people who are not rich correctly assume that they can live better here than there.
I would guess that there are more relatively wealthy ex-pats from the USA here than there are middle class Ticos (people born to at least one Costa Rican parent) in the United States. Somewhat surprisigly, a whole lot of the ex-pats have admitted to me that they voted for
trump, but most of them have healthy bank accounts, or real estate, or good stocks.
I live on my pension from The State Teachers Retirement System of Ohio, not from Social Security, and I watch carefully how I spend my money, so I get by OK., and I am happier here than I had been for years before coming here. :-)
Thank you +Courage Karnga. We mexicans try to be very friendly, and from time to time we find friends for life in random places... :) Have a nice one! May God/the Universe bless us all!

That said, "Mexican Macron" is probably a good example. :/
@@danixdefcon5 With the little difference that Macron is a neoliberal with nationalist tendencies and AMLO a leftist with nationalist tendencies.
@@victormeunier9075 Actually, I think most Mexicans have now realized that AMLO was/is the worst possible option. He has not delivered anything of his supposed promises, most of his economic politics are stupid decisions, he governs through caprices and tantrums, he has dismantled any autonomous organization that served as counterbalance, has demonstrated to be hypercorrupt, nepotist, incompetent, blames absolutely everything on his predecessor and is incapable of owning on his mistakes... although in his speeches he wants to be portrayed as leftist, his actual politics have hurted women, children, the poor, etc. the most, also he made alliances/pacts with ultraright parties which constantly work to undermine minorities' right.
Usually I love John Oliver, but I think than in this case he underdelivered, with I knew why.
@@TheMacLovinn Could you please recommend me some lectures on that subject? I don´t know anything abot mexican medias, but I speak spanish.
And I think we all should take Oliver´s takes on foreign elections with some prudence: his take on the french elections wasn´t particularly well researched either. 2:22 Imagine getting a few bucks by posing for some stock photos not many people will ever see, but finding yourself in tv with John Oliver calling you the Mexican president...
I dont know why but always everything involving Mexico is so weird and surreal
That's not really that high an honor, considering who the President was...
That Mexican congressional candidate, "Fernando Puron," was murdered in public, while posing for a selfie with a supporter after a campaign debate!
A surveillance camera captured a man walking up from behind, raising a gun and shooting him in the back of the head, that's terrifying!
Evidently, Puron was running on an, "anti-cartel platform," obviously making him a target in Piedras Negras, which is scary for Americans, too because it's a town on the Texas/Mexico border.
He was only one of 113 candidates and politicians who have been murdered in Mexico just since the election cycle started.
Fifty relatives have also been killed and 132 politicians, mostly at the local level, have been threatened.
15,000 candidates run for the most open government positions Mexico has ever had, so Drug cartels and organized criminals felt especially desperate to try silencing those who would threaten their hold on lucrative smuggling routes to the world's number one consumer of illegal drugs, the United States of America.
This is yet another huge reason thousands of innocent people are seeking asylum in America, Because they fear for the safety of their families.
And, whether you like Mexicans or not, or believe we must reform our Immigration laws and practices, it's difficult to believe anyone who would say that they wouldn't try doing the exact same thing to protect their family!
How do you even clean a country whose entire government is corrupt? Anyone who shows the slightest sign of resistance gets killed, and the only remnants are corrupt politicians and police officers.
Agreed

Shakeel Zaydan the only way to end cartels is to legalize drugs
Not at all.
Once you remove their main source of income, they're just gonna move on to the next thing that sells. Cartels aren't just an abstract concept, they're people, and thus, they can think. Once drugs don't sell anymore, what's stopping them from doing bank hits instead? Kidnapping and ransoming en masse?
And that's assuming that all countries, suddenly, legalized *all* sorts of drugs completely. 'Cause even if it was legalized in the US and Mexico, there's still plenty of countries out there to support drug trade.
And even then, that's assuming that drugs were legalized to the absolute, no regulation at all, and with anyone being able to buy as much as they'd want. Otherwise, if there was even a tiny bit of regulation (like, say, you can't sell heroin to kids), then there'd still be a market, even if niche.
Things are unfortunately not that simple, and if the solution was that easy, it would've already been tried. Because, even if drugs were legalized, all they'd have to do to keep their stuff selling would be to sell at a lower price than normal.
Plus, come on, it'd just be destructive. Just imagine anyone being able to buy heroin. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

You actually like the Santa bits?
@@ericktellez7632 So much so I am rewatching the video because you reminded me of them. Between John's reaction and enjoying dark humour and gross out humour the Santa bits was probably made by someone like me, for people like me.
Well, it’s 2:30 A.M. EST right now but I got this notification on my phone and I was like “Ehhh, it’s summer vacation, I don’t have anything to do tomorrow anyway” so here we are.
It's 8:30 AM here
basically the same situation for me
Succ Norris same dude
same here, except i got work at 8:30 😅
Its 12:10 p.m. here
How did you not mention Duarte's scam in Veracruz of giving child cancer patients distilled water bags instead of chemotherapy?
Porque todos sabemos que es una basura el pri :p
It would have been to horrible.
Ex Governor Duarte got thrown in jail by Peña Nieto despite being his ally because he was a sociopath who pretended to give kids in his state chemo treatments but they were really filled with only water. Oh by the way, aren't cancer sick kids' parents protesting Lopez Obrador's arrival in Mexico city's airport today because their kids are not even getting saline water bags, and also no chemos since 2018?
The comment of AMLO being a mexican Donald Trump is very accurate
What the hell was with the Santa skit?
I imagine at least 1 parent called their kid in when Santa came in, and then immediately told them to run away!
i came expecting a collection of corrupt politician, i left to search for Anaya memes.
Hahahaha theyre great
You will find a tsunami of them. He's like a robot
He's a Mexican Zuckerberg.
Mexican here, did you find the chicken little ones?
He brought out graphs and pictures to the debates like the weird emotionless sociopath nerd he is. There's one picture where he fakes sleeping with his glasses on.
I literally fast forwarded through Santa 🎅 bit
same!
Aamir Tanoli yeah I love this show but that was over the top
Aamir Tanoli wise decision
Same. That was terrible.
Well that could be summed up in one statement = what was important is he said he jerks off 364/365 a year lol :)
As much as John Oliver my rip on himself for being a coward, whimp or unattractive male, he really is the best, most honest and investigative host around.
I love his sense of humour and his very informative show.
Keep it up John, England and America love you
Awesome segment/episode!
Yet, with all due respect; the Santa sketch totally threw me off!
Last Week Tonight is one of the best shows on cable television.

you forgot to mention distilled water instead of chemotherapy at Veracruz during Duarte’s time.
José Armando Dávila Márquez Nope. That's American businesses stirring up trouble. Viacom would put a stop to that line.
13:08 Uh oh, I guess this is what's coming for us now
The fight in mexico is difrent from the one in the US......in the us is about hatred and the fight in mexico is about corruption and poverty.
I’m from the future. What’s coming for us is MUCH worse.
1:45 John Oliver, actually, that's a very common insult here
as a mexican citizen i litterally dont know either to cry or laugh
That's how Americans felt in 2016
Ainsley Harriott cry
Is it possible Ainsley is both!!! GASP!!!
Been there, when he did a segment on Iran.
im 1/2 mexican mate , i learned the spicy meat (yehehea boi) recipie on mexico
As a Portuguese person I can attest that our mice, in fact, have very large penises. Actually, when we have them in our houses, we usually find them through the sound of their genitals dragging along the floor.
Inês Pardal : any cats being assaulted?
This is true.
that must keep you awake at night.
Inês Pardal that’s unfortunate
ded
Im quite surprised by seeing how accurate jhon got his mexican politics background , he truly made a good research about the topic ,he knew wich was the popular perception and even knew that jose antonio meade didnt had a chance to get elected so he didnt bothered at all to speak about him...thats a hell of a good job.
And yet Meade was arguably the best candidate
@@AGRS22 fuck off dumbass ,he never was.
Still thinking of El Bronco telling his children that Santa doesn’t exist everyday, unprompted, and emphatically
well. that's santa claus completely ruined, then.
Well, there's always the Easter Bunny. Oh wait...
Didn't he make the Easter Bunny a drug addict in a previous piece?
Pierre-Yves LE GAL maybe the tooth fairy
Oh wait
she sneaks into children's bedrooms while they are sleeping
nah, he's a filthy old man just like uncle. that's real all right.
Never liked the idea of an drunk, obese man breaking into your home and leaving a random box by your fireplace?
wtf was that Santa sketch!!!
iKentSpell War on Christmas! FoxNews was right 😱😱
iKentSpell that’s perfect is what that is
I think it was jack black?
Jay Koerner it's Bobby Moynihan from SNL :)
Baysa S awesome! Love that guy!
My mom told me Santa was fake from the start, and I never worried about it after that. Why is that so hard for parents nowadays? Just tell your children how it really is and maybe they'll actually want to give gifts instead of receive every winter.
Oh you know its christmas
They couldn’t come up with anything funnier for the Santa scene?
Jonathan Skee These skits are so unnecessary. The show has so many forced parts it's impossible to not cringe while watching an episode. Don't get me wrong I still like John Oliver but the show has really changed for worse.
It would have been so simple if he just came out, told El Bronco to fuck his mother, and left. But instead they had some serious cringefest.
I found the first Santa scene funny, but I generally agree. The show would work better if they didn't try as hard to be funny. They can have a few jokes here and there, but not overdo it with everything being a punchline. The jokes just end up being cringey most of the time.
"Students were handed over to a drug cartel and murdered, and their bodies were burned."
5 minutes later
"OOH I'M SANTA I MASTURBATE"
They're propagandists NOT comedians.
Okay, this was great, but I have to mention that the Santa Clause bit was, as John Oliver might say, _objectively terrible_ .......
I love this show's work and that was just... painful to watch.
Yeah... WTF were they thinking? Especially at the end... After having delivered such powerful messages... You guys thought dumb cringy sex jokes without punchiles were the best you could? I would've shared this video if it weren't for that idiotic part...
Agreed
It is so bizarre. A politician being absurdly opinionated about Santa is funny enough by itself, did they feel they had to pad for time with a completely unrelated joke?
Indeed, I also feel he did not went deep enough, for instance Duarte 5:29 that fucking piece of shit, stole about 109 millions (and this is for real) by buying IV water and passing it off as IV chemo to treat children afflicted with cancer, I feel people really needed to hear that to truly grasp how fucked up things are over here.
Watching this after Jan 6th is interesting when hearing about when they stayed in Mexico city's square for months on end.
I may or may not be listening to this during my break siting in my Nissan Sentra
That Santa bit will be remembered as the moment LWT jumped the shark.
This is literally the thing getting me through my sundays especially since I don't have GoT
imagine not having got and being mexican right now
What about Westworld?
Got?
Alex Silva there is no fun in bingewatching only 2 seasons
xDqrkCupCqkx_ Game of Thrones
that "legitimate president of mexico" thing hits a little too close to home nowadays
Santa has me CRYING! I think I just ruined my entire life.
Most of this episode was pretty good like usual.
The Santa parts were...not.
Drew Boivie Santa bit, was drawn out and bad on a otherwise good report
+Team Binary Santa go HO HO HO and a snow go rain
On the contrary, the Santa parts were spot on and hilarious.
They were not to my liking, either... but to each their own, I suppose.
are you trying to say you watch john oliver for the journalism? although...the santa stuff was pretty factual
7:30 - 7:33 the sign language for cutting hands it hilarious.
Sillyworld : Wow, thank you for noticing this!
The best part is that he has to change signs when it switches from figurative to literal cutting
Lmao imagine having to process that comment while also making sure you're depicting it accurately to possible deaf/mute voters. If I were Mexican I'd vote for the sign language man.
welcome to Mexican politics ;-;

I work at Walmart and cash checks.. I would never attempt Spanish.. I made that mistake while working at a Whataburger in Tempe, AZ asking a Hispanic could "how can I help you?" in Spanish.. certainly didn't help, lol
I hope he does a 2024 Mexican election episode next week
When he started insulting the so called cartel head, I was scared for John lol
because you love coke and marihuana? lol
@@ixtabehecatl what’s wrong with marihuana lol
A lot of us just learned an awesome insult in Spanish. 😂😂😂🤣🤣
Deanna Jackson use it only when you're really pissed off, we don't say "chinga tu madre" unless we're really pissed
It's something we say when we are really angry.
It's very insulting for mexicans... use it wisely
Yes and no. That insult is actually so Mexican that it is less than useless in any other country. It's like angrily screaming "bloody" something outside the UK. That word was a reason for mocking Colombian singer Maluma for using it. There was a Comedy Central Stand-up Colombia comedian who said: "What is even that word? Have you ever used it? Like "Vaya chingue sumercé". (Sumercé is a very Colombian word for "you" from the region that surrounds Bogotá. It sounds like cacophony next to such a Mexican term.)
Don't use it causally that insult is the equivalent of the N word
2+ years later and I’m still dying of laughter cause crass humor is more often than not the best humor
man watching this after January 6th hits different, cause I half expected him to mention it before I realized how old the video is 😂
Bernie speaking Spanish 😂😂😂
So sick of that geriatric douche
obbchannel No it's not. Spanish is a Latin language. English is mixed between Germanic and Latin. It's more like a German trying to speak Dutch.
John Doe fantastic way to ruin a silly joke bro
Honorable Catsmeat Yes except for the fact that most Mexican presidents have been mostly of Spanish descent.
