Man... Valve is not going to see a very positive reception after that backpedal...
I mean, come on, they HAD to know what wording like that on the TF2 BLOG, which is so seldom used for anything anymore, would stir in a community as starved as this one, right?
They HAD to know this would reverb back and forth because they actually announced an approaching update as though it were something special. Had they not said anything people would have just been expecting the usual, and if they had more carefully worded from the beginning people would have just pictured something like Blue Moon, but a bit bigger, perhaps. This update could still be something of a breath of fresh air, but they've now cemented a bad taste in everyone's mouths, and possibly just snapped that last straw for many seeing this as them toying with a criminally under-served community for a game still making them boat-loads of money.
How do you screw up promoting an update THIS fucking badly? Even though I doubt it was the intention, this felt like a spit to the face from them, building excitement just to silently dial it back for plausibly deniability after using your desperate playerbase to drum up hype for what appeared to be a full-on update.
What the actual shit is wrong is Valve?
Massive love hate relationship with valve here. We all love the amazing things they've created for the gaming community in general, But would it REALLY hurt to update this fucking game from 2007 ONCE?

Hearing this news made me die, revive, die, and become an archangel in less than 0.00006754 milliseconds. Christ almighty this is big.
Until it comes out I'm expecting A slightly larger Blue Moon Update. I'm not expecting Decoarted weapons, new weapons, or new modes at all. Only when it comes out will I gush about that. It'll have new maps, weapons changes, and cosmectics/skins and until I'm surprised that's what I'm expecting.

I'm personally expecting a somewhat smaller but still "major" update; new maps, two to three weapons, and weapon changes. So something on the scale of Tough Break or what we ended up actually getting for End of the Line.

At this point I don't care about new weapons that much, just fix the ones that have been shit for half a decade now.

If this update turns out to be a true major update, I hope that valve's next plan is either the heavy update or that they bring back scream fortress spells.
It’ll ruin the spells market if they returned spells, I’d say make a series two of spells so there would be new ones and spell owners won’t be screwed over.
@@Iciclefairy I'm okay with bring back the old spells, but I understand the argument against it. I honestly just really want to see them add the new spells that are already on the Workshop. Some of those are actually very nice, like the green "Matrix" inspired footprints and exorcism substitute.

Because workshoppers, mapmakers etc. noticed how Valve only picks holiday stuff so they started pumping out those. This blogpost serves as an announcement to them that 'hey, make some non holiday shit again, we might actually pick it!'
It is bigger than what we usually get for a summer update.
Not only that, but they also hinted that this update is going to have a theme. Small updates (bar the seasonal ones) usually don't have a theme to them.

From where I'm standing, either TF2 gets some meaningful changes, or there will be some backlash from them getting our hopes up that will at least be kind of entertaining to watch.

Honestly, just letting Heavy rollout with Primary Shotgun & Lunchbox would be great to see for him get a new Subclass (but getting all-new weapons for Heavy & other classes would also be good to see)

You need to keep doing your thing, Zesty. YOURE the reason that valve started picking decent cosmetics. Your scrutiny of the workshop is why the good cosmetics got the traffic they did. Just keep doing your thing, maybe amp it up until this upcoming update comes.

Enabling Valve servers in the server browser would be the absolute bare minimum but a HUGE help to the game
Going into this with cautious optimism is the right idea, we've been burned and baited so much you'd think the community would've learned its lesson by now. It's been so long without a decent summer update my brain is short circuiting from this blog post. I have everything crossed that Valve actually delivers something jaw dropping this time, but of course we will have to see when it arrives.

pretty sure this was the result of a petition UEAKcrash held, since I'm fairly sure he has direct communications with valve
In the petition crash directly addressed the low quality of submissions (specifically maps), and how creators felt that their creativity was dried up because the only way to get things into the game were through holiday themed submissions, and how that left a large wealth of quality submissions on the table in favor of temporary, seasonal reskins. The "not necessarily summer-themed summer update" part is a confirmation of this. To me, this confirms that the low quality cosmetics that were added in the past were a result of valves choices, rather than the workshoppers themselves, as this petition was a direct result of their frustration with being forced to make wacky seasonal maps instead of what they actually wanted to make.
The blog post also stated a specific intent (non-holiday theme) and submission deadline (may 1st) for the update, which is completely unprecedented compared to previous seasonal updates. I don't expect it to be huge, but this update WILL be different, according to valve themselves.
I had a friend told me that *a tenth class is gonna be added in this update* with the most serious expression you could ever see on a man's face. Saying that people are blowing things out of proportion is a minimalistic expression of how fucking excited everyone suddenly got for the first piece of communication given to us for the first time in 5 years.

I am quite divided by this "Valve only taking community stuff" argument. People have been saying that Valve makes terrible or out of touch weapons/balance/items and should take suggestions and items directly from the Workshop. Now that they're doing JUST THAT, it's a problem?

My biggest concern is that this update may have similar problems to MCs mob votes, where big individuals in the TF2 scene could basically rally their followers into giving certain items that aren't needed, for example, since just about nobody actually plays heavy, I feel that weapons, cosmetics and perchance even actual stat changes may be left out and we will still be left with the stock/tom-vich-GRUs that have stuck around since 2012. Or God forbid sniper gets a buff/better weapon.
I am incredibly pessimistic about this, but who knows, maybe it isn't completely over (insert chudjak smiling at sunset)

I remember seeing a letter from the TF2 Community specifically map makers that was signed by people from the tf2 community before this was announced so idk but man if this is true this would be nice finally an different update.

I'm pretty impressed the sinful messiah David Koresh is so interested in one of my favorite video games.
If they do theme the update a part of me hopes it's (somewhat) themed around MvM as a nod to the bot problems, with maybe a new tour and additional fixes for the game mode

I'm cautious too, but I long for the days 8 years ago when my mind was always racing with excitement to think of what valve might change next, buff or nerf weapons... I am not hopeful per say that this update will bring in some weapon rebalances to spice things up, if they don't I kinda saw it coming- but if they do IF THEY DO- That might singlehandedly rekindle my spark for playing TF2.

I'm gonna be honest, that website timer that's counting the days since the last major update, it's not getting reset. Valve would have had to confirm a character centric update where we're guaranteed to get new weapons and maps in order to consider this a "major" update.

They never actually promised much in the blog post at all. All they mentioned was microtransactions, besides new year-round maps for their matchmaking servers currently plagued by bots. Nothing about new weapons, new features, bug fixes, balance changes, FPS optimizations, etc. Or fixing the bot crisis.
