- On a snowy night, two tall men are walking along the highway on the coast of Maine. They could hardly be more suspicious. They wear light European coats, no hats, large suitcases, and they leave a trail of footprints down to the beach… These strange men are German spies on the hunt for America’s biggest secrets!

The Soviets had much more success in infiltrating the USA.

The USSR had the advantage of many, many true believers inside & out who worked hard & smart. Nazis, not so much.
@@UncleJoeLITE Also, Canaris was a traitor who worked for Brits the whole time. So no surprise his 'spies' in the West always faiIed.
SPY KITTY!!!!!
The cat is obviously a German tank. They're all cats!
Some say, Astrid and Anna are still on set waiting for the cat to decide they can leave.
My thoughts exactly
The cat is a nice touch. "Hmmmmmmm - you're obviously in the middle of something important ... why am I NOT FEATURED???!!!"
Admirable spy craft on the German's part. Send two people in looking like something that central casting would created as a "generic enemy spy" character. Because no one who actually was an actual spy would dare to look like that.
Canaris (head of Abwehr) was a traitor who worked for Brits. No surprise his 'spy operations' in the west always faiIed. Canaris himself and his deputy directly worked against Germany.
The cat and the ladies accent makes look like true masterminds in the James Bond tradition.
Should have filmed only Astrid's hands petting the cat while she continues talking. "Well well well, Mr. Gimpel ..."
My uncle was one of the FBI agents who worked on this case in New York. He never told me the details of the case or his specific role so I never knew the details of the investigation and apprehension until now. Thank you so much for telling this story!
Gimpel wrote a book "Spy for Germany" published in UK in 1957 that I read maybe 30 years ago. Interesting story, he escaped execution because FDR died, executions stayed a month and then the war finished. Wikipedia says he spent 10 years in prison released 1955 back to Germany, then lived in Brazil where he died in 2010 aged 100.
A delightful and informative presentation, Astrid, Anna, and Kitty. Many thanks. 👍❤👍❤👍❤
Thank you for watching 😸
That thumbnail though 😂
Hitler dressing up like Uncle Sam, because he thinks that's how Americans dress like.
"How do you do, fellow Americans."
😂😂 Then he'll add _"How about those white-picket fences huh?"_ 😅😅
Ah ja, i(ch) too liebe vreiheit and reichs *cough* rights
They dress worse than that!
That is a very historically accurate kitty. 😂
Great work as always!
Much appreciated, thanks for watching!
I didn't know until I started watching this series just how much of the success of the Western intelligence services was due to Admiral Canaris secretly working against the Nazis as head of the Abwehr. The British successfully turned every agent the Nazis sent to Britain. In this video we see once again that the mission failed due to a lack of loyalty to the Nazi cause. In fiction Nazi secret agents are often shown as scarily fanatic and frighteningly competent, but the reality was far different. I suppose that, in retrospect it should have been obvious that people sufficiently smart to make good agents would be less likely to be fanatically devoted to Nazi ideology.
Indeed. Thank you for putting this point into words !
A similar phenomenon happened with german inventors and scientists. Huge flight of the brightest and best in the mid 30's.
Do not forget however that the Nazis were obviously losing the war. The spy game might have been more balanced if the winning side was less obvious
@@Cancoillotteman That's not sufficient explanation. If you've been watching Spies & Ties since the beginning, you should know that the Allies have been winning the Spy war for a long time, long before the Axis was obviously losing.
How could the Germans have thought they had any chance at all to defeat the United States domestically? The most they could have done was keep us out of Europe, and they would have needed to take England for that.
Isn't it curious that Hitler didn't realize this? I don't know enough about the war to know this, but if Hitler had put the resources he used to invade Russia into capturing England, it seems creepy in its likelihood to have succeeded.
Does it even matter what the germans know at this point
If it's not troop movements and operational level planning, not really.
With hindsight, no. But at the time some in German leadership thought they could switch to a fortress or siege defense. Then drag the war out for another year or more. This would force the allies into a more favorable peace. Delusional, but it was the dream that kept them going.
Infultration post war is important… once you have information to trade, you can move where ever you want, set up governments and cause a new war… or just get wealthy enough to disappear.
Of course it does, the information that these spies gather will greatly aid Steiners counterattack
@@ittositto6494Operation Werewolf was only one of many angles mid-war. Germany didn't suddenly decide at the end of war to set up groups for post-war, since most everyone knew the moment Stalingrad occurred, ist wast kaput. You gotta remember how much documentation disappeared going into the end of the war on the German side. We will never truly know how deep infiltration got, or how much of it was successful.
General rule of thumb is if you catch 1, 4 or more got thru. If you caught 1 of those 4 later, 3 or more were successful that you never knew about. Sometimes, they are meant to get caught to get the others thru.
Secondarily, some long-term operations aren't meant to recover any information or anything of value at all...those individuals are meant to got into deep cover, sometimes for the rest of their lives, to get into county, state and Federal government agencies for control purposes and influence.
Which was actually happening pre-War here in the U.S. as we already know, with both the Soviets and Germans. And British. And French. Basically everyone was doing it. Name of the game.
That opening did legitimately make me think of Nazis smugging themselves in by U-Boot to sabotage the American super weapon: Captain America. 🤣
Being a resident of Maine, this is one of the stories.I heard from when I was just a little kid. It's awesome to hear it on here and all it's Detail.
great that the spies and ties feline surprise wasn't a cat-astrophe. wonderful show as always!
Nothing better than cat approval of content.
not quite cats on vacuums but close
Fantastic as always ladies!! Thank you Astrid, Anna and the adorable spy cat.
I love how you two play off of each other so well. Excelsior!
What a great episode with the greatest mother/daughter team on CZcams! Loved the kitty, too! My two cats appreciated it very much!
Thank you ladies!
Thanks for watching!
Thank you for making history even more interesting, ladies. Do keep safe.
This is truly an incredible, unlikely story. Truth is stranger than fiction. This was great!
What an amazing story! So well told by two of my favorite internet story tellers! Bravo!
Forget the Nazi spies.Your 😺 is the real focus of the episode. Absolutely adorable ❤❤❤
Wonderful story, wonderfully told. I'll bet this story would make an excellent period comedy film, with the two spies being classic "incompatible buddies."
My god this is very watchable. I must watch it again.
Glad you enjoyed, thanks for watching!
My cat jumped on me while I was watching this. Great video, thank you.
I had never heard or read that Germany knew about the Manhattan Project.... this is mind blowing to me.
The third member of the cast was really a show steeler!
Cute cat 🐱
Thank you very much 😻
Astrid n Anna you two are amazing as always. Your dynamic with that cat was just an adorable cherry on top of a wonderful sundae that was this very interesting video.
Outstanding presentation team.
Hi Astrid and Anna
Beautiful presentation.
Want more stories.
And Astrid your looking great in coat.
Thanks for the video.
A bar in Boston, must be one where everyone knows your name.
Fascinating episode ladies. Thank you.
Good one! Thanks to all of you for all the work over the years. Love the cat!
Great episode Anna n Astrid! And everyone saw that a cat goes where a cat’s gonna go-filming or not! What a fun episode! Time Ghost; simply the BEST!
Be lucky that you don't have my Himalayan Cat Rex there. He would sit in between the both of you, look at the camera & then look at the both of you wanting treats/food & sit there until he gets what he wants!
Great episode ladies.
Sounds like a great cat!
You two are marvelous, keep up the good work.
Cool story. I knew the broad strokes but the more details the more interesting it gets.
What a sweet cat 😺
I can't believe I did it... I'm caught up. I never was with WW1, but I finally have watched everything so far!
3:24 Hello Little Kitty
Aww WW2 Kitty! Thanks to you both!
the cat was a fantastic addition to the video!
Someone has definitely let the cat out of the bag. Thank you, ladies!
Made me chuckle, thank you!
- Jake
I live in Nianitc, bit odd to hear that mentioned but I had heard of William Colepaugh before. Niantic is actually pronounced (n-eye-ant-tic) as opposed to (Knee-ant-tic)
Great stuff again ladies!!!
I can hear Sting singing it: "I'm a Nazi spy in New Yo-ork"
You ladies were informative, charming, and the kitty was the icing on the cake!
Hello kittay😂 Love it! Great video
@26:17 - yup.
This was fascinating, and entertainingly delivered. What a great spy tale?
Thank you, really appreciate your continued support.
-TimeGhost Ambassador
We shall give the kitty the spy name "Captain Darling" 😅
Reminds me of a failed plan conceived by the Italian 10th Light Flotilla. In that plan the the Italian sub Leonardo DaVinci( being modified at LaRochelle to carry the”human torpedo” mini sub) goes to every port city in the east coast. And mount Radio controlled limpet mines on all freighters . A the minute the sub heads for home they radio detonate all the mines at once !!😱
The reason the plan failed was Mussolini was overthrown
And now we want to know: what's the name of the kitty?
I still love it, that Spies & Ties is now presented by Astrid and Anna (and the kitty) - makes it so much fun, certainly the most lighthearted series in WW2. Though I miss On the Homefront, havent had a video on this in a while.
Really glad you liked it and appreciate your incredible support!
-TimeGhost Ambassador
Thank you ladies for a wonderful little spy piece from ww2.😊 and the kitty just added that fun little extra, the little scamp! Also i expected them both too put a pinkie finger to their mouths when they said 1 million dollars.😆
It was a great idea that you run the show together. The cat should be also be made a permanent co-host. :)
What a wonderful and thrilled introduction video of that strange sabotaging mission ( destroying Manhattan project) by two or less than hand fingers numbers... it seems to me it was searching for a certain zoo plankton in the Pacific Ocean by naked eyes ....
Two beautiful storytellers, one cute cat and an interesting spy story. What more can you ask for?
Thank you Time Ghost!
- from my three pet cats
(Joe, Maki and Socks)
Good job ladies!
This story deserves to be a movie, my god
I thought the next cat video hadn't been released yet! 🤣
Best ever episode 😸
Thanks for watching 😸
I don't recall ever hearing this story before.
wow! both astra and anna. i must have been a good, good boy. and a cat too! yes, always pet the kitty! kitty looks very happy.
i had a vague familiarity with this story. thanks for fleshing out the details for me!
This was a grand tale. Thank you. From a bullet train..
Thanks for your comment. As a German, I would be surprised if it was a german bullet train as their internet is too often too slow, am I correct?
-TimeGhost Ambassador
@@WorldWarTwoI was Tokyo-Nagoya.
Meeeoooow ,,
Precise,, informative,,, interesting 😊
I'm very surprised Camp X doesn't have a video to itself n this subseries.
The Canadian camp where the Allies trained spies
My favourite family Duo on this series 🥰
Thanks for the lovely comment!
I have a book on U-123 during Operation Drumbeat. This was the initial U-boat attack on the US east coast. It was printed in 2010 and I don't recall it mentioning any of this. I think this all happened after that operation.
You guys (gals) have managed to uncover yet another item of WWII trivia.
Just when I thought my favorite channel could not get any better, They add a cat!
Glad you like it! We always try to get better! -TimeGhost Ambassador
Fantastic as always, and your cat is such a well behaved Feline it is adorable
Great special, but one detail is off that would drive those from the NYC area crazy. It's grand central terminal (not station)
For the railroad it's Grand Central Terminal. For the subway it's Grand Central Station. Greetings from The Bronx.
3:29 What a nice cat!
Yup favorite channel.... they got a cat 😊
Thank you ladies, aaand KITTY!!
So interesting, I am from that part of Maine were they landed
I've read Gimpel's book. Fascinating story, and always astonishing the incompetence of german intelligence, luckily for the free world.
I suggest to make an episode also on operation Greif, probably peak incompetence of german intelligence.
Well, damn.
Love the cat! Nice addition to the team... We all know who's the boss.
Don't tell anyone, but it was all his idea ... -TimeGhost Ambassador
Outstanding video, ladies! Thanks for calling me "darling," Astrid! 😊
I would love to know what they did to keep the odor of a combination of diesel and salt-spray from permeating their clothing and gear whilst aboard the U-boat. In my experience, even a sealed garment bag wouldn't be enough.
Cats of ww2 special NOW!
Spy cat need to become a regular host for Spies & Ties!!!
Isn't it amazing how a cat can bring a production to a screaming halt?!
😼😆😂
WOW you gals have a third broadcaster! What is his or her name!?
Emily - she is a rescue cat and we love her so very much after lots of surgery she is fantastic now - we called her Emily because Indys wife has the same name and when we shoot here in Bernried, he always has one Emily with him :)
@@astriddeinhard433 I have two rescue dogs named Jake and Daisy! Found them as pups at a truck stop in Little Rock Arkansas! So give my love to Emily ❣️❣️❣️❣️❣️
Kitty is a bonus and needs a special episode!!!!
That kit really threw those ladies off their game
Cat checking his sla ve's : )
..the House in 92nd Street ....
It is quite incredible how many resources were wasted on what basically amounted to an expensive holiday for all the success the operation had.
Fabulous fabulous.
I humbly request more kitty in future spy videos folks 😂
I'm struggling with the shoulder pads and fashion.
But can't knock the ladies. The legends. Still down with the content though. Thank you. 💛
Nice earing's! Real emeralds I hope.
I love watching Astrid and Anna. Also, did Anna get a haircut?
The cat is a great 3rd host.
I find it hilarious that Gimpel was released from prison first
Kitty needs to be a regular host!
Is the cat a double agent or a triple agent?
