I Got my Nikon F2 Repaired by Sover Wong - What to Expect (EXTENDED SERVICE)

- While I set out to make this a short recap of my repair experience with the highly regarded Sover Wong, it ended up being my second longest video to date. This vlog is for the few people who own a Nikon F2, need a proper CLA, and/or a full overhaul, and have been thinking about sending their camera in to the legendary Sover Wong. This is not a "how to" or "home repair" vlog. It is simply my experience you Sover's services.
I reached out to Sover in August of 2018 and requested a refoaming and shutter speed calibration (basically an overall check up). He said his earliest availability was in 13 months. I heard there was usually a wait period but I never thought it would be over a year. Nonetheless, I told him that was fine and to put me in queue. He replied that he would email me when it was time to send the camera in.
This was my experience. (Spoiler alert) I was thrilled. Major thanks to Sover Wong for taking such care with my equipment.

Sover is amazing. His attention to detail is second to none. I just completed one of his classes and loved it.
I think Sover took advantage of you. Fixed rate services should be just that. They should not double once the item has been received. This puts significant leverage over the customer. These types of bait and switch tactics are illegal for good reason in countries that have good consumer protection laws. On top of that I would be livid having been sent that DP1 he sent you. Yours was brassed beautifully - and him telling you he was going to discontinue working on your camera unless you continued to cough up dough? Give me a break. Local techs can repair f2s! This guy is not the only game in town despite what the internet tells you.
I guess I was lucky. Sover coached me on what to look for picking an F2 off of ebay. Answered every question I had for him. I got a pristine looking F2 from Japan, have had it for 7 years and though I don't shoot with it much, it's always been great, no problems. He told me to just keep using it as long as it worked. I do have the DE-1 meterless version though- makes things a little simpler.
I got one of these Nikon F2 black body cameras and it comes with the 2 parts motor drives MD-1 and the MB-1 and also I comes with the DS-1 which fits on the left side of the camera and I need to get the camera repaired and I paid TOTAL £10.00 for the complete sets from a camera shop in London in 2023 and when I sale them all one day I can make from £300 to as much as £600
what was the grand total including shipping both ways? You also get bragging rights because you can say Sover overhauled it. !!!

Hi Kyle, you'll be fine with your decision(s). There is value in having a fine working tool, and the value is not always directly in currency. Sover has serviced two F2 for me (first one got stolen a year ago with a LOT of photogear in a burglary) and I am happy. Besides your reasoning: a "pristine" looking F2 would need service too, and more often than not things are hidden/buried inside we ordinary users just cannot see. Your story I believe was a special case anyway, but "repairers from hell" (as Sover calls them) have been on my second F2 as well. Have fun using the camera! Cheers Rolf
I don't know. I have an old F & 600 doesn't sound bad. fortunately I have an F2 in perfect condition so anyway, 600 is steep but probably well worth it as this guy has some sort of god status.
Man…just contacted him yesterday, 26 months waiting list... I’ll consider directly buying from him ; difficult choice between F2a or as

I have my dad's 69 F and 50 1.4 Nikkor that he bought new to take pictures of me before I was born in 1970. His appreciation of Nikon and Panasonic started when he visited Tokyo and Seoul on leave as a radio operator in the Korean war from '52 to '54. It rubbed off on me as I've had several F3 HPs, F4s, 2 F5s and now a D5 and D850. I'm considering a Z9, but honestly, my Galaxy S22 Ultra takes such amazing pictures, it's hard to justify another 6k for a body. I've shot with a couple F2s and they were so good. As usual, everything old is new again and film cameras are making a comeback. Congrats on your amazing camera.

I'm an F2S fan... I used one as an enlisted Navy journalist in the '80s and still have one today. I had it CLA'd last summer. I was looking forward to a follow-up video. Were all your repairs satisfactory? Camera working well?

I am looking for an F2AS now, and you have inspired me to have Sover CLA it - I’m in Oregon: how much was all the shipping back and forth? And how do you ensure it isn’t damaged with all that transport? Great video!
My turn in line came up sooner also. I really don't know how long mine took and I don't care, Sover is a Prince among men. I will never sell my F2. Enjoy yours!
