- Profiles host Mickey Burns interviews Singer, Songwriter and Actress Irene Cara. Irene catapulted to stardom in 1980 when she won the role of Coco Hernandez in the box office smash "Fame". She would go onto make Academy Award history that year becoming the only performer ever to sing two academy nominated songs, "Fame" and "Out There On My Own" - in one evening. And in 1983 Cara added to her stardom - winning an Academy Award for best original song, "Flashdance... What A Feeling" for the hit movie Flashdance.

Irene was phenomenal in the 80's, an everlasting inspiration. She made us New Yorkers proud as hell when we were teens and in our early twenties when Fame came out. I remember Fame being explosive along with Saturday Night Fever. It was a good time for young New Yorkers,, and we danced our asses off every Friday and Saturday night in the clubs.Thank you for giving us so much life through your talents Irene Cara. Rest in Peace.

In the early 1980s I (born 1975) lived in Connecticut where everything from NYC hit us literally over night. Irene Cara was practically worshipped in the early 1980s. I watched Sparkle and Fame on VHS and loved'em. Irene Cara was warm, modest, and appreciative. Today's Pop stars are narcissistic and promote sociopathy, especially the rappers.

Loved her when I was growing up. It was such a shame that her struggles with a lawsuit over her royalties kept her out of the limelight for so long. She still looks and sounds great. A class act.

I respect her to the fullest. Actual music, and talent, she played the piano and sang. No auto-tune no computers no mimicry just talent.
Irene Cara seems like a really nice person. I wish I had an opportunity to meet her when she was alive. For that I would have had to spend half my life in U.S. to get those kind of opportunities. R.I.P. she was a great performing artist.

I agree, there were some poor career choices, especially in some of the onscreen roles that she took. But as far as her music went she was mismanaged and manipulated. There are no guarantees in life, I'm just happy to see Irene doing what she loves.

I've heard of her when I was a depressed teenager struggling in High school during the mid eighties. She disappeared from the limelight during the 90's and so on. Imagine thirty five years later . She's back.
