Really good, honest review. I own an occidental left hand I've had it for the last 25 years. At 70 my hips can't take it anymore. I just bought the 601 dimond back. Live the vest, not so sure about the pouches. I'm still trying to figure them out. I totally agree with your suggestions that you should not be scared to customize your belt. First thing I did on my old oxci. Was cut off the tape holder.
Very awesome video. Love it. Never be afraid to use your own skills to improve your property. That's why I love leather (and occidental) is cause you can cut, sew, rivet leather with decent ease and with some practice make it look like professional work. I only started as a drywaller 4 years ago but after a year of the cheapo Home Depot set up and saving up, sprung for some Occidentals. Honestly probably nicer than what a drywaller needs but HEY, I can carry stuff for steel framing as well as anything else I need to do and modify them how I like em. I recently purchased a $400 cad, CLC elite pouch and on the first day one of the rivets pulled through on the tape holder. I was only using a small tape and hoped it would stretch out over time.

I hear you. I kept the hammer sleeve, flat bar sleeve, and Loki pouch. I like the flat bar sleeve on my occidental and I may put the Loki pouch with the hammer sleeve on the left of its own belt with the occidental tape/knife holder on my right side for specific applications like siding or roofing or something fairly basic. Just got into the construction scene after 3 years in automotive shop, I would've never even thot about drilling into my own belt to save some money where I come it's either buy the tool or don't do the job thank you for the info sir!
The dewalt belt and suspenders I feel are the best utilitarian belt of them all. Also I do have the same occidental belt you just purchased. Durability I'm sure will outlast the dewalt. But for some reason I still go grab the dewalt belt. Dewalt DG5617
Try out the Oxy 9515LH with the Stronghold Lite 1546 suspenders. Super light and you cant get a more comfortable belt. Ive had a set for over 10 years and they will last another 5. I even bought another set a couple years ago just to have.
Ya they're a good option for working in kitchens or somewhere you need to be a bit more careful about potentially brushing a wider tool belt up against finished surfaces.
Great overview. I personally have modified my own belt a lot. I did like the suspender belt less versions. I think I will modify my setup in a similar way. I run suspenders and have my belt loose. Always wondered just how I could make it so I have a belt that just holds pouches, but doesn’t buckle at the front. Thanks
That's awesome. I've never been drawn to vests because I prefer my tools at the waist and don't always wear a shirt in the summer but I can definitely see the comfort and convenience of the vest. I'm glad you like it.
The old school square 25 foot Stanley (the smoothest tape ever) fits perfect . But you don't have the stand out on that... but really you don't need a 35-40 tape . Unless your laying out floors or putting up forms. in that case. Put a pack of cigarettes in the tape holster and carry the long tape in the big pouch.
100%, but their finish setups don't look very comfortable. That's just my opinion, I don't have experience with them. I don't like having my tape at my crotch. I had my old setup like that and jumped off the tailgate enough times to know how much that hurts lol. I was pretty obsessed with Akribis for a while. Luckily their lead times were so long I kept looking and questioning before adding to my already ridiculous belt collection.
@@Tool_Addicted_Carpenter They ship quick now. They have the side work belts now as well as a rear stitched in place. In my experience they’ve been super comfortable. I had diamondback before and over time they became more and more painful to wear. It’s to each their own though with bags. As long as it’s comfortable and works for you that’s all that matters.

Hey thanks for watching man. I definitely take it seriously and I'm always trying to fine-tune my setups. I have multiple belts for different tasks. It's definitely overkill but it lets me be creative and mix and match and I have fun with it.
I don't really have a desire to spend anymore on diamondback after I built my own belt but I'll look into the grande and recommend it to anyone pursuing that setup. I appreciate you watching and recommending.
Akribis look awesome. I very much considered their belts before I built my own. I've since expanded on the custom one seen here and it's perfect for me. Otherwise, I very likely would've tried out the smaller Akribis.
How does your partner keep that left side pouch organized? I have that same one (Pro trimmer tool bag) and was thinking of ether modifying it or buying the electrician tool bag to replace it since it only has a couple tool slots and a big open space that I never use
It's the occidental universal pouch with a timberland belt chicago screwed to the outside to create the hammer loop and a husky clip on pouch on the inside that I cut the clip off of. Just wondering what you think of Occidental's sizing. I want a set of adjust to fit leather framers but am worried my waist is too small. Would you say the 32" minimum waist size they have listed is accurate compared to the sets you have?
I think their sizings are somewhat off. I'm a 32 waist but the small belts don't really fit me well. The green belt I showed here is a small and I'm actually on the last hole. My other belts are mediums and slightly large on me but I usually have hip buddies so they fit the best. I believe when you measure for a tool belt you actually want to be more towards the belly button than the hips, at least with the Diamondbacks. If I had to guess I'd say you're probably a medium, but I don't own any adjust to fit so I can't to say for sure. It's a major purchase, don't hesitate to return something if it doesn't feel right.

I want to purchase the green occidental leather bags and add a diamondback belt. Would the diamondback belt fit good into the occidental leather bags? If so do you recommend it?
I'm actually not sure. I never tried occidental pouches on the diamondback before I sent it back. I don't see any reason they wouldn't, but I believe full size occidental pouches have a 3" opening and the diamondback belt itself is either 2 or 2.5", so they may fit a little loose. I would also say to double check the distance between the belt loops on the diamondbacks to make sure the oxys fit. It's pretty easy to return stuff these days so maybe check out all of your options. Diamondback, buckaroo, nylon 3" oxy with hip and back buddies, etc. They're all pretty similar in price. I know it sounds like a pain in the ass but it's something you're going to have for a long time and wear almost everyday, so it's probably worth it. If you're just aiming for diamondbacks for the convenience of the cobra clip then that's a big factor to consider. Sorry I couldn't provide a more direct answer.
I'll check out the buckaroos but I have to mention that my custom belt is no doubt my favorite. I've done some more modifications to it in the past 8 months. I'll make a short video soon. Thanks for watching brother.
@@Tool_Addicted_Carpenter no problem. Always glad to learn something from somebody who's been there. The essential Craftsman is where I heard about the buckaroo belts. They seem to be pretty highly desired overseas. All completely handmade and they have some interesting takes on the norm.
Diamondback system is not worn on your hips, goes higher up around your waste and eliminates the weight on your hips. I hated it at first belt would slide down to my hips regardless…added suspenders stays put now and can’t feel any weight or hip bruises.
I would go with diamondback if I was always wearing suspenders but I prefer versatility which is why I can't get away from the occidental belt that I built. With the hip buddies I barely notice the belt is on and it allows me to throw suspenders on in 30 seconds whenever I want to carry a little extra.
I’m an electrician and have an occidental setup, i kind of want more tool belt accessories for storage on my belt. Anybody have good recs for what I should get?
Makita makes a pretty crazy one. Go on eBay and search 'Makita ultimate electricians pouch'. Seems a little overkill but sometimes you gotta scratch that itch lol
I checked out Akribis a while back. They do look specialized and high quality but they're certainly not going to make Diamondback or Occidental look like junk. It's all preference.
In Canada the diamondback is $700.. idk if I can pay that after hearing lots of complaints but I really need a tool belt for hvac, mines way to large and going on scissor lifts and stuff isn't ideal. Any ideas? Maybe occidental?
I'm not sure exactly what you carry for tools but I'm happy to give a few compact options that I know of from Occidental. 5 in 1 pouch, 4 in 1, Task pouch, clip on pouches either deep or shallow, forged caddy, snip sheath, telecom pouch, and maybe the universal pouch if you just need big empty storage. It gets expensive quick though. Most of these pouches cost $25-50 and the telecom is $90 I believe. A belt alone is around $60-85 for 2" or 3" leather or the oxylight 3". I think if I was in HVAC I'd look at the 3" oxylight belt with the 4 in 1, 5 in 1, snip sheath, and universal pouch in the back for random storage like rolls of tape. Maybe a clip-on bin in the front for screws. That setup would run around $250-300. If you choose to get a 3" belt then make sure to double check that whatever pouches you choose will fit on a 3" belt. Some of what I listed will only fit a 2".
I started out on a crappy lowes belt it sucked but I didn’t know anything at the time just needed a belt for work. Then I got a gator back belt it was pretty good lasted long had alot space and features and then one day this crack head had a bunch of stolen tools but among the tools he had a occidental tool belt in great shape almost new and I bought it for $40 bucks after haggling with him. It was game changer for me n a once in a lifetime opportunity I know how much they cost new and how good they are. I’m not sure which one is I think it is the oxy lights it’s leather and the green buckets, I have had it for years now it’s probably time to buy new buckets they are starting to tear finally at the belt loop. I am going to try the fat lip on my left side and probably buy the same thing that is on it for the right
I did the same with the $30-40 Lowes AWP brand. It would rip or fall apart but I liked the configuration so I would sew it back together with 30# braided fishing line lol. After ~3 years of that I finally bit the bullet and got some nice oxylights. Good luck with your new setup sir.

That way you could ad and take things out faster as needed. I might try it! Also I figured out the “clip on single tool sheath” type products work for quickly adding room. The bucket boss ones are $5 and then there’s nicer looking ones for like 10 or so
I watched the other one and the next day was at home depot and picked up those mini husky pouches, I’ve had those before and returned them I can’t believe I never thought of putting them in a bigger pouch!
@@chriscolameco6850 I cut the clip off the husky and it fits very nicely in the universal pouch or my fat lip, but I just leave it in the universal. I'm not sure what you mean by snap on. Do you mean the clip ons? I have a few of the clip-on deep pouches and the occidental 9502 clip-on double pouch. The Chicago screws are pretty quick and more secure. Need to use some loctite to make sure they don't come loose over time though.
Two of these are my partners but ya I bought the others lol. I wore out a couple $30 setups and a $100 setup from Lowes and that's when I bought my first occidental probably 4-5 years ago. I bought the Diamondbacks recently but I'll be returning them because I didn't get what I was looking to get out of them.
No one brand is right use them all to create a lean minimalistic tool belt. Thats the winning key factor minimalistic. not a entire 20x36 rv. Dont need a tool dress to do the job 90% of everyones oversized bags are empty. You carry no tools especially framing that requires the least amount of tools of all trades
Not sure what you do for work but as a remodeler my belts are pretty full and everything gets used. At the minimum I carry hammer, tape measure, speed square, 6" combo square, 1/2" chisel, trim bar, cats paw, knife, end nippers, pencils/sharpies, nail sets, drill bits, and wood glue or PVC glue. On heavy or task specific days I'll add snips, chalk line, screwdriver, full size pry bar. I keep a couple empty clip ons for fasteners or small trash like nails/screws I'm pulling out. Your other comment says all of these and I haven't figured it out yet but I've been using my custom belt for almost 2 years and it's worked out perfectly. Most components are occidental but I have the diamondback bar sleeve and an off brand tape clip.
@Tool_Addicted_Carpenter maybe I'm different I set up shop. Tables stacked tool boxes everything I need on-site tool tote close buy with all tools required for the job. There is no need to carry all that at one time. Hammer tape 1 speed square pencil flat bar knife nail pulls as needed cats paw as needed angle finder as needed same for chaukline. And a pouch for nails or screws. I used to carry alot like that but it's not necessary tool tote is where is at

I have dozens of Packouts and Ridgid boxes for general purpose or task specific work but my belt EDCs are my most used general purpose hand tools refined from 15 years experience. I would rather not climb off of staging or a ladder to retrieve a tool. I can use every tool I named in a matter of 10 minutes and I'm not walking back and forth or leaving things on the floor or ladders or in another room.
I hear you. I had an issue with the 'gen-1', we'll call it for lack of better reference. The fold out was a full 32nd off and the numbers wore out overnight. The 2nd gen had some solid upgrades. Numbers last a lot longer and the extension was only a 64th off, which I found acceptable for framing, and that's the only thing I'd use it for. I also value the shelf life of certain tools. If a $17 square that I like can last a year, I'm willing to pay $1.25/month for that convenience. I really appreciate you watching a commenting sir.
LOL why do you have THOSE diamondback pouches? No wonder your having issues with Diamondback. Im rocking Mazo on dominant side with Clavo for trim non dominant. or I switch to Eagle for framing non dominant.
They are actually great pouches. They hold every tool that a finish carpenter or remodeler would carry. The Miter in place of the Flux on the non-dominant would also be great for framing. The biggest issue I found was that I didn't want to need suspenders with the primary setup of the Flux and Loki, but without suspenders the same tools felt like they weighed more because there was only ~3 1/2" of Velcro to hang on. I think if diamondback added some width to that section then I would definitely like having that setup. I considered using some Chicago screws to distribute the weight but I didn't think it made sense economically to modify it when I have a solid setup to begin with. I was able to add the flat bar holster to my occidental which was a nice upgrade. If that's all I get out of my attempts with diamondback then I'm satisfied.
I like having options for different tasks. I mostly use my smaller customized belt. Sometimes I wear the green belt for framing, the husky apron for insulation, and the work shorts for kitchens.
Depends on what you do for work but these are some fairly common belt setups. I mentioned some more compact options in my responses to another commenter named "thee goat." You can research those pouches if you're interested. Thanks for watching.

Well at least you have choices now when i was an apprentice everyone had craftsman or McGuire poutches😂 later on some lumber yards had CLC.

I had my old setup like that and jumped off the tailgate enough times to know how much that hurts lol. I was pretty obsessed with Akribis for a while. Luckily their lead times were so long I kept looking and questioning before adding to my already ridiculous belt collection.
@@Tool_Addicted_Carpenter They ship quick now. They have the side work belts now as well as a rear stitched in place. In my experience they’ve been super comfortable. I had diamondback before and over time they became more and more painful to wear. It’s to each their own though with bags. As long as it’s comfortable and works for you that’s all that matters.

Hey thanks for watching man. I definitely take it seriously and I'm always trying to fine-tune my setups. I have multiple belts for different tasks. It's definitely overkill but it lets me be creative and mix and match and I have fun with it.
You should try the grrande setup from diamondback. Don’t put all the load on your shoulders, you’ll regret it overtime
I don't really have a desire to spend anymore on diamondback after I built my own belt but I'll look into the grande and recommend it to anyone pursuing that setup. I appreciate you watching and recommending.
I 100% agree with all of your critiques of Diamondback bags. Great ideas but some of the executions are poor and keep the value low for me.

Akribis look awesome. I very much considered their belts before I built my own. I've since expanded on the custom one seen here and it's perfect for me. Otherwise, I very likely would've tried out the smaller Akribis.
How does your partner keep that left side pouch organized? I have that same one (Pro trimmer tool bag) and was thinking of ether modifying it or buying the electrician tool bag to replace it since it only has a couple tool slots and a big open space that I never use
He has a few extra occidental "tool shields" chicago screwed inside it to keep tools separate.

On the belt you modified, what is the pouch that you have the hammer on?
It's the occidental universal pouch with a timberland belt chicago screwed to the outside to create the hammer loop and a husky clip on pouch on the inside that I cut the clip off of. I keep my smaller customized belt in an XL Packout in my truck and I hang my framing bag in my trailer.
Just wondering what you think of Occidental's sizing. I want a set of adjust to fit leather framers but am worried my waist is too small. Would you say the 32" minimum waist size they have listed is accurate compared to the sets you have?
I think their sizings are somewhat off. I'm a 32 waist but the small belts don't really fit me well. The green belt I showed here is a small and I'm actually on the last hole. My other belts are mediums and slightly large on me but I usually have hip buddies so they fit the best. I believe when you measure for a tool belt you actually want to be more towards the belly button than the hips, at least with the Diamondbacks. If I had to guess I'd say you're probably a medium, but I don't own any adjust to fit so I can't to say for sure. It's a major purchase, don't hesitate to return something if it doesn't feel right.

I want to purchase the green occidental leather bags and add a diamondback belt. Would the diamondback belt fit good into the occidental leather bags? If so do you recommend it?
I'm actually not sure. I never tried occidental pouches on the diamondback before I sent it back. I don't see any reason they wouldn't, but I believe full size occidental pouches have a 3" opening and the diamondback belt itself is either 2 or 2.5", so they may fit a little loose. I would also say to double check the distance between the belt loops on the diamondbacks to make sure the oxys fit. It's pretty easy to return stuff these days so maybe check out all of your options. Diamondback, buckaroo, nylon 3" oxy with hip and back buddies, etc. They're all pretty similar in price. I know it sounds like a pain in the ass but it's something you're going to have for a long time and wear almost everyday, so it's probably worth it. If you're just aiming for diamondbacks for the convenience of the cobra clip then that's a big factor to consider. Sorry I couldn't provide a more direct answer.

@@Tool_Addicted_Carpenter no problem. Always glad to learn something from somebody who's been there. The essential Craftsman is where I heard about the buckaroo belts. They seem to be pretty highly desired overseas. All completely handmade and they have some interesting takes on the norm.
Diamondback system is not worn on your hips, goes higher up around your waste and eliminates the weight on your hips. I hated it at first belt would slide down to my hips regardless…added suspenders stays put now and can’t feel any weight or hip bruises.
I would go with diamondback if I was always wearing suspenders but I prefer versatility which is why I can't get away from the occidental belt that I built. With the hip buddies I barely notice the belt is on and it allows me to throw suspenders on in 30 seconds whenever I want to carry a little extra.

Makita makes a pretty crazy one. Go on eBay and search 'Makita ultimate electricians pouch'. Seems a little overkill but sometimes you gotta scratch that itch lol

Akribus leather out of BC Canada, the best tool belts, hands down. make all these others look like junk.
I checked out Akribis a while back. They do look specialized and high quality but they're certainly not going to make Diamondback or Occidental look like junk. It's all preference.
Easily the best Leather Bags out there. Makes my Occidental feel basic despite how nice of a bag it is.
In Canada the diamondback is $700.. idk if I can pay that after hearing lots of complaints but I really need a tool belt for hvac, mines way to large and going on scissor lifts and stuff isn't ideal. Any ideas? Maybe occidental?
I'm not sure exactly what you carry for tools but I'm happy to give a few compact options that I know of from Occidental. 5 in 1 pouch, 4 in 1, Task pouch, clip on pouches either deep or shallow, forged caddy, snip sheath, telecom pouch, and maybe the universal pouch if you just need big empty storage. It gets expensive quick though. Most of these pouches cost $25-50 and the telecom is $90 I believe. A belt alone is around $60-85 for 2" or 3" leather or the oxylight 3". I think if I was in HVAC I'd look at the 3" oxylight belt with the 4 in 1, 5 in 1, snip sheath, and universal pouch in the back for random storage like rolls of tape. Maybe a clip-on bin in the front for screws. That setup would run around $250-300. If you choose to get a 3" belt then make sure to double check that whatever pouches you choose will fit on a 3" belt. Some of what I listed will only fit a 2".

you could also check out badger tool belt. they aren't leather, so they are light. you can get off the shelfs sets for 499 cad.
I started out on a crappy lowes belt it sucked but I didn’t know anything at the time just needed a belt for work. Then I got a gator back belt it was pretty good lasted long had alot space and features and then one day this crack head had a bunch of stolen tools but among the tools he had a occidental tool belt in great shape almost new and I bought it for $40 bucks after haggling with him. It was game changer for me n a once in a lifetime opportunity I know how much they cost new and how good they are. I’m not sure which one is I think it is the oxy lights it’s leather and the green buckets, I have had it for years now it’s probably time to buy new buckets they are starting to tear finally at the belt loop. I am going to try the fat lip on my left side and probably buy the same thing that is on it for the right
I did the same with the $30-40 Lowes AWP brand. It would rip or fall apart but I liked the configuration so I would sew it back together with 30# braided fishing line lol. After ~3 years of that I finally bit the bullet and got some nice oxylights. Good luck with your new setup sir.

Also I figured out the “clip on single tool sheath” type products work for quickly adding room. The bucket boss ones are $5 and then there’s nicer looking ones for like 10 or so
I watched the other one and the next day was at home depot and picked up those mini husky pouches, I’ve had those before and returned them I can’t believe I never thought of putting them in a bigger pouch!
@@chriscolameco6850 I cut the clip off the husky and it fits very nicely in the universal pouch or my fat lip, but I just leave it in the universal. I'm not sure what you mean by snap on. Do you mean the clip ons? I have a few of the clip-on deep pouches and the occidental 9502 clip-on double pouch. The Chicago screws are pretty quick and more secure. Need to use some loctite to make sure they don't come loose over time though.

Bro, bro, bro tell you didn't buy all of these belts, in my career I only have 2 and the first one fell apart last year and I replaced it with DeWalt.
Two of these are my partners but ya I bought the others lol. I wore out a couple $30 setups and a $100 setup from Lowes and that's when I bought my first occidental probably 4-5 years ago. I bought the Diamondbacks recently but I'll be returning them because I didn't get what I was looking to get out of them.

No one brand is right use them all to create a lean minimalistic tool belt. Thats the winning key factor minimalistic. not a entire 20x36 rv. Dont need a tool dress to do the job 90% of everyones oversized bags are empty. You carry no tools especially framing that requires the least amount of tools of all trades
Not sure what you do for work but as a remodeler my belts are pretty full and everything gets used. At the minimum I carry hammer, tape measure, speed square, 6" combo square, 1/2" chisel, trim bar, cats paw, knife, end nippers, pencils/sharpies, nail sets, drill bits, and wood glue or PVC glue. On heavy or task specific days I'll add snips, chalk line, screwdriver, full size pry bar. I keep a couple empty clip ons for fasteners or small trash like nails/screws I'm pulling out. Your other comment says all of these and I haven't figured it out yet but I've been using my custom belt for almost 2 years and it's worked out perfectly. Most components are occidental but I have the diamondback bar sleeve and an off brand tape clip.
@Tool_Addicted_Carpenter maybe I'm different I set up shop. Tables stacked tool boxes everything I need on-site tool tote close buy with all tools required for the job. There is no need to carry all that at one time. Hammer tape 1 speed square pencil flat bar knife nail pulls as needed cats paw as needed angle finder as needed same for chaukline. And a pouch for nails or screws. I used to carry alot like that but it's not necessary tool tote is where is at

I have dozens of Packouts and Ridgid boxes for general purpose or task specific work but my belt EDCs are my most used general purpose hand tools refined from 15 years experience. I would rather not climb off of staging or a ladder to retrieve a tool. I can use every tool I named in a matter of 10 minutes and I'm not walking back and forth or leaving things on the floor or ladders or in another room.
Those husky speed squares are sht. The extension part after a while becomes lose and give you wrong degrees when doing rafter 👎🏾
I hear you. I had an issue with the 'gen-1', we'll call it for lack of better reference. The fold out was a full 32nd off and the numbers wore out overnight. The 2nd gen had some solid upgrades. Numbers last a lot longer and the extension was only a 64th off, which I found acceptable for framing, and that's the only thing I'd use it for. I also value the shelf life of certain tools. If a $17 square that I like can last a year, I'm willing to pay $1.25/month for that convenience. I really appreciate you watching a commenting sir.

LOL why do you have THOSE diamondback pouches? No wonder your having issues with Diamondback. Im rocking Mazo on dominant side with Clavo for trim non dominant. or I switch to Eagle for framing non dominant.
They are actually great pouches. They hold every tool that a finish carpenter or remodeler would carry. The Miter in place of the Flux on the non-dominant would also be great for framing. The biggest issue I found was that I didn't want to need suspenders with the primary setup of the Flux and Loki, but without suspenders the same tools felt like they weighed more because there was only ~3 1/2" of Velcro to hang on. I think if diamondback added some width to that section then I would definitely like having that setup. I considered using some Chicago screws to distribute the weight but I didn't think it made sense economically to modify it when I have a solid setup to begin with. I was able to add the flat bar holster to my occidental which was a nice upgrade. If that's all I get out of my attempts with diamondback then I'm satisfied.

I like having options for different tasks. I mostly use my smaller customized belt. Sometimes I wear the green belt for framing, the husky apron for insulation, and the work shorts for kitchens.
All these are too big.
