Building an Off-Grid Log Cabin in a Cedar Woodland using Hand Tools, Bushcraft Survival Shelter ep.4
VloĆŸit
- Äas pĆidĂĄn 22. 07. 2021
- In this episode of building a cedar log cabin using hand tools, I continue working on the roof frame and then attach the waterproof membrane, before adddind a layer of debris. The plans are now to build a porch area, bed, table, and install a wood stove (probably wait a few months for that idea). If you have any suggestions for this build then leave me a comment below!

Very nice.
The definition of real life Lincoln logs. Absolutely impeccable
Watching from kerala india,đđđ
Yea man its turning out really good I really like where this is going can't wait to see it finished!.
Dustin, I just opened up CZcams and, "Voila!" Gonna make myself a cuppa tea and enjoy.
Legend
đ
You are gay!!!!hahaha
Horizontal parts of a roof structure are called purlins đ
Even Red Green in Canada knows you don't lap the edges on the logs so water will set in the joints. They should have been cut so water would drip off.
Love your Brandon and what you teach us. Thank you mate
Always great contact thank you for sharing Tom Long Island New York
Looking really good .
6:37 Finger get hammered!!! LOL đ€Ł that face!
Loved doing this build with you mate! Can't wait to finish her and do an overnighter đđ

I JUST JOIN YOUR CHANNEL I REALLY LIKE THIS GUY WORK BE CAREFUL OUTTHERE YOU GUYS ROSE FROM AMERICA
Good to see you boys constructing this :) good work..... I'll come visit you guys soon in September I hope
Good video love the video
đ
Wow, this shows how to build a very cool wooden hut in a mini but comfortable living room !!!
Love the cabin series
Thanks for watching đ
You soon get stuck in with these projects my wifeâs still waiting for me to decorate the stairs and landing for the past year ! đ
Please build a small little green house next to you cabin, that would be so cool. Or at least a garden.
Remember that he is in a pine forest with acidic soil and plenty of shade.
Good point. Had not really thought that through had I...?
Thank you Dustin... and Kerrbear, popping over to your channel soon as I finish this comment. As they say in the construction business, getting it to the "Dry" stage is a good idea. Then you're good to let your imagination run for the interior while keeping out of the elements. Really enjoying watching your progress.
Love all your videos the build and catch and cooks.
the roof was very good earthy style...very nice and loved your the log cabin..perfect indeed
Good idea for the roof love it
Great progress Dustin! đđ
You are working very hard with great intent. I don't think that roof will last very long in extreme weather. đ
Wow beautiful đ I see Amber, love your dog. đ„°đ„°
After seeing the cabin in the flesh at the weekend just gone ( 14th-15th August on your Most Excellent Subscriber Game Prep Weekend ) and sampling your Bushcraft Cocktail Skills, you know a woodland Tiki Bar add on to the cabin could be a winner !
Love what you're doing, except for one thing. The tarp, you really do need to pull it tight or water will pool and stretch it over time eventually leading to it leaking. My hubby and I used to own a roofing business, I know tarping roofs...lol, and a bunch of other things that I wish I didn't. Now, Dustin, where's your duct tape... that's how you fix holes in a tarp, and most other things...lol
So happy your endeavour a log cabin. I hope someday you visit Oregon, awesome old cabins.
On your recommendation I subscribed to Kerr's channel. I don't know how far you are from the other sites but you may need a fire pit, food prep site, boot cleaning/drying rack...a latrine? I was reading through my old Boy Scouts book, there are some nice setups there. Maybe build an oven in the cabin? Cheers Dustin, you're tops!
Great vid can't wait for next one
Going to need a nice little place to use the Afghan cooker in there! I think you should come up with a new or unique kitchen/cooking area for the log cabin. Maybe a 3 part series. Can't wait to see what you do next!
Looking good. Have really enjoyed watching all your build projects.
A great little project! Can't wait for the next episode.
Iâm not the brightest person in the world but the way you did your roof I can almost guarantee itâs going to hold water I donât know why you did it that way but thatâs just my personal opinion so like I said Iâm not the brightest person but thatâs the way it looks to me
Thanks for commenting. A small amount of water will collect and then overflow , following the ridges and then running off the ends.
BUSHCRAFT TOOLS I feel like the water might pool rather than run off, but it doesn't look like it would pool enough for anything bad. Awesome shelter though bud, real nice.
Outstanding job impressive shelter â€ïž
Cut a small window on both sides to give the cabin a natural light during the day đđ”đ
porch will be a good idea as it will keep the weather off the front of the cabin as it is a bit exposed at this point
Great idea for the roof Dustin. A small cabin like that couldn't support a lot of weight.
why couldnt it ? he pegged the walls all the way up it can support a lot of weight just like any other cabin
Woodcraft go light pioneer, 'Nessmuk,' used short black tacks for tensioning tarps to a perimeter frame. The work went quickly, plus he could easily draw the tacks for reuse on another shelter. Purlins will prevent tarps on your build from pulling such tacks loose. Adding a front porch is appealing. Make it deep to provide space for projects or relaxing on. Architectural surveys show that narrow porches are seldom used. Humans find them to be cramped.
Awesome build brother. That would be a great place for overnighters.
WOW NICE VIDEO
So, there's not going to be a floor to this cabin? Not sure how long you want this to stay up for use but perhaps a place for the stove while in winter use. I like the tarp idea for the roof but I have a feeling there might be some puddling around the edges of roof since it wasn't pulled tight. Lookin good though! Can't wait to see what you do next.
Thanks đ
you'll need a couple of benches for sitten around the fire
Thats on the list mate đ
The porch would be great for storing wood especially when it's raining or really damp.....at least you'll have dry wood!
Two raised beds inside for you and your lovely dog...table maybe and a stool ...
Nice one good vibes
Outside shower or tub as nice addition!!
I would like to see a Dakota fire pit for heating and cooking. Does this need to be planned before the walls are built ?
Nice one.
Knew you would do a tarp and debris roof. Why even ask what weâd suggest?
At any rate Iâve enjoyed the build. You did a great job!
Great video. Looking forward to the next one.
Heh, quite a nice wood hamlet you have there :D Should finaly start working on some amenities, like the long-awaited oven, nudge nudge. Or an outhouse/latrine...not the most glorious of buildings but one of the most useful, especially for the longer stays đ Possibly a well as, well, well.
AWESOME BUILD SO FAR, MY NEW FRIEND. SUBBED AND LIKED ALL VIDEOS SO FAR...
Yo Dustin, looking good dude!! I think the link is broken to Kerr's channel (is for me anyway). Have you done any lives recently? I've got my notifications on but not had any notifications so guessed you've been busy. My wife and myself use to quite enjoy having a virtual drink and chat with you and the other subscribers.
All the best B&Y
Thanks for letting me know...it should work now
@@BUSHCRAFTTOOLS Cool, will check it out :)
Great little cabin there Justin, loving it !........from Australia :-)
Is this your super shelter,
Good morning I'm watching from philippines stay safe God bless
I guess you've no experience using a Froe and a Bodger. No shingles today I suppose.
Definetly add railings.
It will be interesting to see how you set out your porch and fireplace. No livestream for me today and probably not over this weekend either.
How long does moss survive after placing it on the roof? And also how long does the structure survive before it starts to rot away?
Do a rocking chair for the porch
Cover deck with a hitching post.
Don't know about a log cabin, but in normal construction, those horizontal roof pieces are called purlins.
*Of course you can re-wax that tarp roof liner or paint heavy linen with a thinned silicon + turps coat for a different approach ... try it and see ... its all just a big guessing game hombre !*
I've watched many such bushcraft hut videos from all over, and I've never seen anyone build a latrine. Do none of you ever need to use a loo? :)
No đ€
@@BUSHCRAFTTOOLS are you saying youâre full of sh⊠:D
So, is the mulch layer there to dry out and act as insulation before you put another water repellant layer over it? If not, the poles under the tarp will collect pools of water and either drip through or breed mosquitoes and stinky fermentation. đŠ đŠ đŠ đŠ đŠ đŠ đŠ đŠ đŠ đŠ đŠ
If that is the only tarp layer, I would re-do it with the pole-stop-layer on top of the tarp so that the poles will keep the debris layer from sliding off while allowing water to drain underneath and down past the end of the roof and away from the walls. Preventing collection of water at each pole will also help minimize condensation when you sleep in it during the winter. Keeping the roof well drained should also prolong the life of the tarp and the debris insulation layer.
It might be a learning experiment to re-do half the roof for better drainage and then see which half performs better over the winter. Hint: Put the drained half on the side you want to sleep on so you are not dripped on when you are trying to sleep.
Also wondering if you could upcycle some old fishing net to hold down the debris layer and provide a stable base for the moss to grip?
As an accessory build, would it be worth building a small clay-lined (cobb-lined) fireplace with exterior chimney to heat the cabin in winter?
Building anything special for your dog would also bring out lots of smiles (and thumbs up). Maybe a portable mat of some kind to get your dog off the ground while it watches you work outside or inside.
âđđ đđđđđđđ
Lots of good ideas here, especially if Dustin's purpose had been to experiment or build for the longer term.
I don't know what the 'horizontal bits' are called either, but what you did with them is brilliant. But I can see them acting as gutters and pooling the water, even if you do cover it with moss. Could you lay some rope across the bottom, ends hanging just a bit over the ends, to act as a wick to help the water drain?
I also liked how you used those logs to act as steps for the door. But if you put another stake just to the right of the door, you could always cut the rest of the logs just past that stake if you ever have an urgent need for more firewood
a chiminea would look awesome ive seen your clay work lol.
I'm going to try that one day. Thanks đ
@@BUSHCRAFTTOOLS no, Thank you , i love your work and ive learned a few things and a few laughs along the way, your channel and few others have helped save my sanity lately thank you very much i look forward to more
Just watched your mates vid, I got one question. How's your head, you good.
Do you have a list of the tools you use to construct this masterpiece?
Dig a WELL!
Can you post of link or do a video on the laws in the uk about building this type of shelter please and also maybe some areas of the uk this is alowed many thanks
Cool build but you should have taken the bark off the logs they last way longer.
I would like to see you build a rope bed
I cannot wait till you have overnight or and cooking in the woods With your stove What do you use in your curry sauce
Please always make sure your hammer head is fixed tightly because Iâve actually seen one fling off and that surely is super dangerous. The cabin is really cute and the veranda idea is going to make it so much cuter love it, ideas put some hanging pot plants full of herbs on the poles that are sticking out sooo cute and good for you
Great suggestion đ
When you say "short term", how long are we talking about? Few months, couple years...? Just curious. Love the build series, cheers m8.
What size auger do you use?
You will be a bestival end off the week are you going to live stream there...
Haha...might do! đ

@@BUSHCRAFTTOOLS ik that's y i asked đ€Ł
How long did the build take?
The link to his chanel doesn't work for me on my tablet. It wants me to open up CZcams in the browser for some reason but it doesn't open up the chanel.
Hi amber
ADD A WINDOW OR 2...
PLUS CHIMNEY PORT?
đłđł
Honestly the cabin is nice I am not a fan of the roof. The tarp would be better without the dirt on it.
What do you mean a temporary cabin??
who showed you how to roof
Build a clay fireplace inside.
Or brick.
they are called purlins
its just the oddest way ive seen anyone do a roof, to shay i guess its just a place ta stay in time and time again
Done a decent job. Can't understand why you cut the log short they will have come in handy for putting a ladder up for repairs to the roof.. Get some moss and clay mix to plug the sides I would have dug the earth out and built an underground one and put the logs inside and on Top and covered it over with the tarp and leaves and twigs so nobody could see it you could have had a 15x15 wide by 10 foot deep shelter
Have you ideas for the interior floor?
Love your videos, but sorry I think you spoilt it with the tarp, all that hard work should've been shingles.
This shelter is going to be deconstructed in less than 6 months
How abt a floor lol
honestly, I'm a little disappointed in seeing another tarped debris covered roof. nothing original about that at all... shoulda gone with the handcrafted shingles even if it would have taken longer in my opinion.
I appreciate your comment
@@BUSHCRAFTTOOLS my concern is that mulch becoming heavy with rain water and sinking down into the tarp in areas where there is no wood backing. A tightly stretched tarp with a moss covering would work. You find uniform pine trees whereas all of mine taper so much they wouldn't make a nice log hut. I'm trying to build these for my goats.
What's the benefit of a "debris" roof? Strong wind will blow it off and it will soak up rain and weigh a billion tons making the tarp sag and leak. đ€š
