  • This is episode 17 to a complete barndominium build. During this episode we walk through all the steps for trimming out windows with J-trim, as we finish the west side of the building. This will be an 80x56x19, 2-story house with a 56x56 shop. The owners are calling this property Westberrie Acres.

    Beautiful work custom fitting the j trim! Like the attention to detail!

    Great job. We used Haslet Frames around all of our windows and doors after installation. The frames butt up against the J-channel flanges and give the building a better look than having that steel flanges from the J-channels sticking out.

    Best Video I've seen for a leak free window install. Bravo:) you wouldn't happen to have any video or tips on installing a turbine/whirley bird vent on a 1:12 pitch roof that has PBU panels?
    Thank you, your a great Teacher.

    I'm not sure how your "beeper" is designed but we cover ours with tape. Keeps in audible but isn't ridiculous when you're close to it. OSHA approved, of course lol

    So, how do you trim it out if you have the misfortune of having the window end on a rib? Unfortunately, there was no way to adjust the layout to prevent it from happening because windows had to be centered over sinks. Thanks for the great videos!

      im interested to know the same thing. i have two windows that landed on ribs and of course they are leaking!

      I will run my header channel out to the flat and match the overhang on the the other side. Some window details just have to be slightly different. Just the metal world.

    Doing this job soon on my covered deck. My windows are all over the place, so I don't think I'll be able to get a flats on either side of all the windows. There is likely to be a rib somewhere next to a window jamb. How do I work with this?

    Very nice video(s). Do you have a video or link that shows how to intall the windows right on top of wainscoting? Also any videos on how to space out the girts for the wainscoting? Thanks

    Any chance you could explain how you would remedy a rib landing on the side J-channel? This was a great step by step to follow, thanks.

      @linovie Před měsícem

      3ft coverage c to c of rib, have a rib land dead center of the window and you'll come out in a flat

    Question. .. how do you do the rake to valley metal tradition on the porch gable? I am scratching my head as I need to Figure out that transition before Monday

  • @islandtooldepot4772
    @islandtooldepot4772 Před 21 dnem

    great video!!! question... does the metal panels come with the screw holes pre-drilled? if not, what method do you use to get them straight across all yhe panels? TIA

    • @MrPostFrame
      @MrPostFrame  Před 21 dnem

      We measure the girt locations and pre-punch multiple panels at a time.

    • @paulmaxwell8851
      @paulmaxwell8851 Před 13 dny

      I do some VERY careful measuring, then mark out and drill all the holes in a stack of metal panels, five or ten or more at a time. If you make a mistake you've ruined the entire stack. Measure thrice, drill once!

    Great video! Is it alright to use a stapler instead of a nailer to install the j trim? Or did you find that a nailer works better? When doing tin on a shouse have you ever ran the side pieces of J two inches longer than the window so it sticks past both ends 1" and then did the same diagonal cut 1/8" for a more finished look?

    • @paulmaxwell8851
      @paulmaxwell8851 Před 13 dny

      Personally, I don't trust staples to hold in the long run. I like screws. I did once try your idea, to get a mitered look. It was a real pain to make it look just right, and I'll never do it that way again. Just my two cents worth!

  • @Geesum44
    @Geesum44 Před 3 měsíci

    I was not clear on those bottom tabs that were bent outward when you go to fit the the side piece to the bottom piece . Does the tab stick on top of the bottom piece between the window and the channel or does it slide inside the track of the bottom piece ?

    • @paulmaxwell8851
      @paulmaxwell8851 Před 13 dny

      Install the side j-trim, then bend that tab toward the center of the window, onto the bottom j-trim. NOT between the bottom j-trim and the window.

    When barndo building Is it normal practice to not use sheathing on the roof or walls like typical construction??

    • @MrPostFrame
      @MrPostFrame  Před měsícem

      It’s not required because you get shear strength from the metal. However, we now sheath all our roofs for many reasons. If you don’t want sheathing on the roof, like this client we require drip stop on the bottom of the metal.

    How did you set the windows to have that over hang before the j trim. Was it a box frame ? Did you have all the nail flanges on the windows too. Thanks

    • @MrPostFrame
      @MrPostFrame  Před rokem

      We have multiple videos on how we install our windows. The windows do have nail flanges.

    I’m confused as to why you don’t put that j channel on top of window prior to putting up the sheet metal?

    • @MrPostFrame
      @MrPostFrame  Před rokem +1

      It's very difficult to get that metal in there if J-channel is already in place. There is a FJ trim at the top and to get a nice fit that piece of metal needs to be put in prior. Also, helps with getting that J-channel set properly at the top for water proofing purposes.

  • @mkzenthusiasts

    You do have a sheet metal sheers to snip that annoying beeper

    my windows do not have the j-trim filled in like the windows in the video, do i need to buy something to fill that void before installing the trim?

    • @MrPostFrame
      @MrPostFrame  Před rokem

      No you can put your jtrim right up against the window and it will be just fine.
