Nintendo didn’t officially release Pokemon in China until generation 7, so it was called 神奇寶貝 by fans and in the Taiwanese dub. 神奇寶貝 is often literally machine translated to magic baby.

GippyHappy It’s legitimately just the words “magic babies” with the literal definition! The official translation didn’t keep that AFAIK but I’ve never watched or played Pokémon in the official Chinese releases, since they’re relatively new.
