We test three of the most popular 315 watt Ceramic Metal Halide Grow lights for PAR output. The three lights are tested in a 1m x 1m (3,5ft x 3.5ft) grow tent with the same bulb. The lights are hung art their optimum height and 36 PAR (PPFD) measurements are taken evenly across the grow area. The total PAR output can be calculated and the PAR map produced. Results as follows:
Maxibright 'Daylight connect'
PAR output 506 PPFD
MIGRO 'Economy'
PAR output 497 PPFD
Growers Choice 'CMH kit'
PAR output 510 PPFD
Test equipment:
Quantum sensor Apogee SQ 500
Grow tent: Black Box Silver 1m x 1m
Ceramic metal halide grow light

You and 2 other people do I make sure I watch all your vids! Your channel is no bs just straight forward info. Fair and real cant beat that my guy! From east coast USA well done!
Before you all ask.. The hanging height for the Maxibright was 30cm, the MIGRO Economy was 30cm and the Growers Choice was 40cm (the growers choice reflector is narrower than the other 2 and needs a higher hanging height to keep the centre PAR level at 1,000)
Great vid Shane...thank you. Is it safe to assume then that 30 cms (or 40 if using the Growers Choice set up) is an appropriate height off a plant canopy? I'm just concerned about UV and burning/bleaching. Been having some issues in my tent and trying to eliminate things to narrow down the source. Thanks dude...
@@TheMisanthrope. Hi, I calibrate the height using a quantum sensor which is easy because I just lower until the centre, and highest, PAR reading is about 1,000 PAR (the sun is 2,000 art mid day). The CMH spectrum has nly 0.7% UV v's the Sun whch has about 7% so there is little chance of any damage to you or your plants from a CMH lamp.
@@MIGROLIGHT Thank you.
I love these videos, I'd kill for a par meter... unless you want to test my home brew and tell me the results ;)

Can't wait to give your 315w CMH a try. Great video, love the honesty as always! 👌👊
I love the honesty. I have a CMH already, if I buy another I'll look for yours.
I like that this channel is honest on results, subscribed and thums up….I plan on using the migro cobs mixed with growers choice 315... figure get the best of both worlds
Just want say i enjoy your videos. I got really into grow lights here lately since I started overwintering pepper plants. I have always grew with my old shop lights for starting seeds but had never grew through the winter. I got a cheap led light for Christmas and my peppers are really responding to it . I can't wait to get some extra money and try some higher end grow lights. It's kinda hard to spend a whole lot of money on them when I only grow vegetables.
Very interesting, Would it not be useful to also have the surface temperature of each par map square segments to also know how much heat is given out for that particular square.? I would of thought this could be useful info when trying to purchase the coolest running kit.
You are very honest,😎,if o buy a light,is from you
Very helpful video, thanks, and respect.
Love this light
I've a 1mtr high x 1mtr long and 27inch wide cubaord I'm going to use was looking at dimmable ballast but this seem to fit the bill what do you think?
thanks for all the quality content / tests!
would love to see test results of the dimlux 315w fixture :)
do you think between low frequency and uhf are big differences?
Ooh great informative video as always. I'd love to see an Electric Sky 180 or 300 tested if the opportunity arises
Could you please review the Nanolux 1000w CMH grow fixture compared to the growers choice 1000w fixture and compare the Sunplix 1000w DE bulb vs the Maxpar 1000w DE bulb. Growers choice advertised a 1000w bulb but has yet to release it.
Thanks for the info , I've been using the 315 cmh for a few years now and I can tell you from experience that the cmh gives more potent buds ! I have run several of the same clone's for a few year's now so I know exactly how they grow under a 600-1000 watt hps , the 315 plants are more potent ! I'm not a scientist but I assume it's because of the high UV ! 4x4 room , 1 -315 and two 150 watt hps , replaced one 1000 hps , works for me 26c !
Agreed
It's due to the range of the light spectrum, UV included. Don't let anybody tell you different! That bulb creates the closest thing to the suns light spectrum.
@delosombres do better research when commenting: "Under high pressure, CMH bulbs can produce powerful light output that contains Ultraviolets (UV) like the sun.
These UVs include UV-A, UV-B, UV-C, especially UV-B which is really helpful for plant growth, overall all 3 types of UV are harmful to human eyes.
Glass 'reduces UV, it does not block it'
Hey Shane, can you tell anything about the heat development between cmh and hps ? I am really interested in switching to a cmh fixture but especially in the summer time hps produces way to much heat in my tent. Are the cmh fixtures cooler? much love and respect from Germany
so 1 foot ie. 30cm off the plant won't burn or damage it?
Would the Focus be suitable in a 0.75m x 0.75m x 2m grow tent? Or would there be light bleaching, and heat issues in summer? Thanks.
Sorry, i dont speack well english. I have a guestion. May i use cmh witout coolmaster, use only ventilation
Hi, since your a light guy maybe you could get in touch with HID lighting companies. I was going to ask why hasn't a company hasnt come,to the market with a,potassium argon bulb? It would have a great spectrum for plants
Why do you hang all the tested lights so that there's a big "hot spot" of 1000 PPFD in the center (usually 1x1 ft) and then the perimeter is just...crap. Can/could you merely adjust the height to get a more even spread of intensity? Maybe aim for 750-850 max in the center if possible?
Thanks.
Is Lumii solar 315 and 630 any good? Kit goes for around 250 euro, seems affordable.
Did you do a par verification with the Sun System 315 watt lec brand
Why didn’t you compare the sun system CMH/LEC 315w, which has the bulb mounted vertically? I love your channel! Thanks for the informative videos!
So I'm wondering if your bulbs are CE and if they are, What brand of light are you putting your name on?
Phillips is the inverter of the CMH, and makes of the best bulbs in my opinion.
Hi Shane have you tested an adjustawing 315cmh. Would be interested in how they perform.
How is the heat output? Would this be a problem in a 36x20x63” tent?
great video thanks!! was that a juruparri in the tank?
CMH, The only HID worth using 👌👍
Shane, Maxibright have a 4k & a 3k 600w cmh bulb with an E40 instead of a pgz18 connection.
Supposed to be very good. Please check them out . Thanks
I run cmh plus a timber cob kit plus a hlg qb kit. one thing iv noticed with cmh is the shorter flower time im not sure if it was strain related as iv been running the same strains so far but thought id mention it
Thats the difference in hid and led. Cannabis has always responded better to hid. Flowers swell to breathe and move moisture. CMH is crushin the game since they came out. Growers choice is by far the best cannabis grow light for the money.
Does the same apply for wattage / yield iie. 600w hps should yeild close to 600 g rams does the same apply for led ie. for a MIGRO 100 Pulling 96watt form the wall is the most to expect 96grams
A dry gram per watt is high for HPS. However high efficiency led should yield 50% more per watt compared to HPS
Why did you not chose a vertically hung cmh to compare with also,?
since they are all soo closely rated it comes down to price and warranty?
What is the uvb index for your migro cmh light ?
I cant find the migrow CMH bulbs for sale anywhere online.it seems like all you guys have available are LED. How come yall out here making the best bulbs in the market and then discontinuing them? Or where the hell are they at?
Hello Shane. Love your videos and I love my Migro 400 setup. Been meaning to ask you, is that Migro 100 in the water of that tank, in the background? If not, that is great optical illusion.
It's in the tank. It's ip67 so you can submerge to 1m for 1 hour. More practically you can get the light wet or leave in a samo area with no worries
@@MIGROLIGHT wow, I really wouldn't have thought you could do that with these lights. Good to know that they can get wet, though I won't be dunking mine in a tank anytime soon, lol.
Where can I buy your light from in the uk London ...seems it's the best value for money

The best cmh lights are as follows
Hellion Adjusta Wings 630w DE with Super Spreader. 1290 umol
Hi-Par 630w DE. 1150 umol
Lumatek 630w DE. 1100 umol
But yeah if you want to play with 315's then yeah for sure ok I go 100%
Hellion Adjusta Wings 315 with the 4200k Japanese Bespoke Globes!
Roughly 600 umol.
What was the hanging height of all 3 lamp's?
Can you adjust the output and does that effect the Spectrum. What they like to cool? Ta
Growers choice can be adjusted and yes of course it will effect the spectrum since not the right power is going to the bulb. This would happen with all light except led s
Are 630w DE CMH lights using 4k bulb veg and 3k bulb flower. Going to outperform a 600w hps in yield and quality that's all I need to know .cheers?
Yes without a doubt way better
have you done a video yet on Ceramic HPS? I just picked up the hortilux unit, i'm really enjoying its results so far. the one i got came with the CHPS as well as the hortilux blue bulb. i realize they aren't the most efficient in terms of total radiant energy or lumens, but i feel like the sprectrum is more than making up for it.
I bought the bulb on impulse then realised I needed a new ballast too. I haven't bought the ballast yet. It might be the next impulse buy..
I have a question I am wanting to run 2 315 w cmh fixtures. I also have a 400w double ended hamelton balist and fixture I am thinking on running for a few hours a day for a more intense blue when vegging. The bulbs for the hamelton fixture are for a salt water aquarium they come in 10000 to 25000 k and you can also get them in a super blue or atinic . the bulbs are in full spectrum. they simulate the sun at a water depth of up to 25ft. with no loss of the benifical light and form what I understand the higher the k raiting the better the penetration. If used I will be placing this fixture between the 315w fixtures and running it for 4 hrs in the middle of the day with the idea to simulate high noon when the sun is in the highest position of day in the sky.. I have found little info on these types of bulbs. Like a color temp graph. The other question is can I clone under the 315 lights. Also Phillips now makes a 4200k bulb how soes this compare to your brand bulbs? Thank you for your time in answering my questions. I am new to growing and in a legal state... Martin
too add the 400 watt light in question is a hqi bulb
Always educational 👍. Can you comment on vertical vs horizontal bulb orientation? And does the fixture have an performance impact?
More of the light must be bounced off the reflector with a vertical bulb so they are generally less efficient. Also the he reflector has to be deeper to fit the bulb which makes them higher and they require more vertical space. Overall a bad idea for grow lighting.
MIGRO I’m reading that the 315 bulbs are recommended from the manufacturer ( Hortilux) to be in an vertical position. Is this information incorrect?
Just looked at them. They are $550 !!. They say the bulb must be base up in the reflector but I don't know why..
What 630w cdm would you guys recommend
Please do 630 de next!
I use a 630w double ended cmh, it's a fantastic lamp, I have great results with it
Mario Frigo what reflector are you using. And are you using a 930 & a 942 or are both bulbs the same? And which bulbs are they?
What size room

Best veg light ever!
how much heat does this unit produce? Would it help warm up a closet that is a bit on the cold side?
It produces about 60% heat like all HID units.
🇮🇪Up Irish Growers! 🇮🇪Thanks for the always useful and well-explained info! Especially as regards various grow lights’ actual light spectrum and par rating. Of all the lads on CZcams, @migro has consistently given me the most useful info I’ve yet to find!
Hi! As I'm french sorry for my english. I eardrum that nobody use cmh because it's an old technology and mh like hps lamps are better. For ex for végétative period I use MH600W and for flowering periods I use an HPS 600w lamp. I bought a 250 w cmh lamp but in fact I didn't know that ballasts were different between CMH AND MH/HPS. So is it intelligent to by a CMH ballast ?
Lumatek make a cmh now and its cheap. They are suppoed to be more efficent but they are only 315w so until they start making a 600w single bulb system i think its not going to catch on.
@@davesmith95 thnks for your reply, if I understand it's not the same thing I'll have more result mither my CH or HPS 600w.
Hi, CMH is newer than HPS or MH and also more efficient. check out this video for comparison. czcams.com/video/W7SYrgnwoHY/video.html
I don't think you can get a 250w CMH lamp I'm sure they are only 315 or 630 @ 3000k. Or 4000k ; and yes you need a specified ballast for a cmh lamp , hps and mh ballast are not compatible with CMH Lamps..p.s.. lmao ( i eardrum) gotta give it to ya tho, your English is better than my French so...
Buy a longer cable to attach light to ballast. Keep ballast outside tent to reduce heat.
That wouldnt reduce heat much on a 315 cmh you can always handle the ballast even after being on for days straight
MIGRO ~ can you please answer this questions. How high typically should you have your 315 CMH light from the top of the plant? Currently I have mine about 2 1/2 to 3 ft.
If you want 1000ppfd like in the video, then the answer is 30cm or 12 inches.
Or more exact: start at 24" and work your way downwards. But there's no need to go lower than 12"
@@lrrrruleroftheplanetomicro6881 thank you very kindly
Damn I wish you'd tested the Dimlux 315's - I have two of those bad-boys that I run alongside my Cree 3590's. HLG Quantum Boards and ChilledTECH puck. I'd love to see how they compare to the other models on the market. Great video as usual mate.
Canna bis hey, how does the quantum board compare to your two dimlux? I’m trying to choose between led and cmh. Thanks from another cannabiphile!
any suggestions on a led light for a 4x4x5 gorilla grow shorty tent? ($300-$500)
or any light
How much is your migro economy CMH?
what wattage is the hps and mh. your comparing to the cmh
HID comparison video here: czcams.com/video/W7SYrgnwoHY/video.html
At what height do you hang lights away from seedlings?
30 inch depending on intensity and heat
And what's the cost of any of these lamps?
Do these get as hot as MH or HPS?
Well played for keeping it real Shane ; at least your honest if nothing else lol ,most company's would probably not admit/nor post their results if they weren't favourable ,Albeit marginal !.consumers /potential customers can and will identify with and respect that. Ps love the results from migro led, shouldn't be to long b4 I've saved enough to purchase myself, saving 4 the 400, was checking the website the other day but are out of stock! ????
Thanks and yes we are out of stock for a month. Had a problem with a batch of heat sinks and have to wait until more are made. Not the best start to the new year....we will be back in action in February. Sign up to the website for an email notification when we are back in stock
Man, watching your channel convinced me buy a CMH for my first grow setup. Your honesty made me order your setup. That 2% is something to consider but the amount of information and work you provide us is well worth it. Thanks for the video and future content!
Thanks, Let me know if you need any info when setting up, thanks, Shane
Cmh 👍
How about sun system
When do you recommend using those ? When you have less capital to invest ?
After your ass gets sore from the LED guys taking turn's on you.
Is my 2x2.5 tent too small for a 315cmh?
2ft x 2.5ft is 0.6m x 0.75m = 0.42m3. The PAR output from the CMH is about 500PAR so your average PAR would be 500/0.42 = 1,190. This is too high and need to be under 900. You need a 3ft x 3ft tent for a 315w CMH
I thought it was 2019? Where’s all the cmh de’s? Or are they not as good or something?
The best for 2019? But you've got all off brands?
Growers choice is not an off brand. Do you know what your talking about?
They all about to learn Be!!!!!
would a 2 bulb fixture to do a 5x5 tent well?
Just about. You would get about 900 umols PAR over 2.25m2 which is 900/2.25 = 400 average PAR. That's pretty good but you could go to 900w CMH and 600 average PAR would be better.
@@MIGROLIGHT Thanks for the info! I will get shopping and hopefully pick the right stuff! lol. All these options make it so hard!
@@MIGROLIGHT hey Shane, appreciate all the great information, will the cmh push a better quality bud for taste and trichome production over a led?
Si why do anyone buy any light except cmh?
I have testet 315w CMH from Phillips around 4k and 3k. Both vertical and horizontal position. Horizontal wins. No doubt. A good reflector is needed.
I have also testet 3k vs 4k CMH. From seed to harvest. The 4k provide the best over All result (more smell, more taste, stronger potency + 4k is superior in veg) the 3k bulb gives little more Mass Like 20-30 grams more harvest than the 4k. The bud density is the same. But 30 grams is nothing, compared to the quality from the 4k bulb.
I rather lose 30g. Than letting go of the better bud quality.
Another thing i have observed is, plants grown under CMH lights, produce much more resin Early in Flower compared to 600w HPS. Resin production is insane with these CMH lamps.
Done under 315w in a 120x120x200cm tent. Never going back to hps in My flower Room.
Does your migro led outperform your migro cmh ?
samuel desrosiers I think it does
ceili will i get dense flowers with migro led as with a cmh or hps ?
samuel desrosiers the led is well over 2um per watt while the cmh is only 1.29um per watt. Although cmh puts out a much better spectrum vs led.
Hello, Yes the MIGRO LED is more efficient. The 215W MIGRO 200 is about the same output as a 340W MIGRO Economy CMH
Do I need 2 of these for a 5x5 tent?
Yes
I'd go for atleast 3 cmh, ideally in that space i would go for 4 x 315 to maximize light spread.
what is pricing difference between them?
Google. This is a quality review not welfare weed
I got 2 #migro315cmh lights for the flower room last year and the plants love them. Ima get another for my veg room. Very good light for veg or flower.
@CHICANO’S WITH DANK I would say, 630 cmh =1000 hps
you haven't test our cmh light yet
Send me it and I will test it
is that light in your tank underwater?
Yes. The lights are ip67 sobrated for 1m depth for 1 hour. Practically it means you can wash it down and not worry.
@@MIGROLIGHT Class
These bulbs are originally designed to be used vertically in the reflector and the lifespan is cut in half when used horizontally. Also not as efficient when used horizontally.
Cmh are the best! The Girls love it.
So cmh is still best choice?
Till they come up with more efficient but this is truly a gift. Easy on the amps and totally gives bang for the buck.
@@warrenkelsay9554 the Philips that they built through gavita is the best light I have all of them we could do that for you
I dont understand why he does not tell you the recommended height for the other two lights, he just gives you the height for the migro.
Should have used the Growers Choice bulb
I have one but I kept the bulb the same. The test was to compare the overall fixtures. There is a bulb comparioson video on the channel also. They are mostly within 5% of eachother for output.
😀😀
hate how companies always compare old school hps with only red to new lights. these are decent fr veg, fail for flower compared to dual spectrum hps. the ones we used for years now, not them old school hps.
to be honest all this did was test the shades reflection. their all shaped diff and gives off diff results. prove the ought then use all same shades too
Yo
dimlux is the best
Ummmmmm, I notice you don't have the best CMH bulb in your video. Cultilux with UV-X is smashing the competition in the 315 game and setting the new bar with the first ever manufactured 1000w DE CMH. In fact if you look at Cultilux's old 500w arc tube and GCs 500w arc tube you will see they are using our outdated technology. Look them up my friend. You have nothing to lose
I cannot understand why people use this technology when there are cob leds that double the efficiency (ppfd/w). 😕
GC has definitely been hurtin feelings this year lol. We get it shane you hate cmh and i probably would to if i was a led manufacturer. Your results are completely useless. Last video you run them on the same controller , this video you use your bulb on all units. Completely pointless , would you use the same drivers to compair leds ? Would you change diodes ? No , you compair one unit with another one and list the price of each like all your other "fair" comparison videos. Really shady Shane.
That's a valid point.
Great info but you sucking your teeth every ten seconds almost made it unwatchable
