    We test three of the most popular 315 watt Ceramic Metal Halide Grow lights for PAR output. The three lights are tested in a 1m x 1m (3,5ft x 3.5ft) grow tent with the same bulb. The lights are hung art their optimum height and 36 PAR (PPFD) measurements are taken evenly across the grow area. The total PAR output can be calculated and the PAR map produced. Results as follows:
    Maxibright 'Daylight connect'
    PAR output 506 PPFD
    MIGRO 'Economy'
    PAR output 497 PPFD
    Growers Choice 'CMH kit'
    PAR output 510 PPFD
    Test equipment:
    Quantum sensor Apogee SQ 500
    Grow tent: Black Box Silver 1m x 1m
    Ceramic metal halide grow light

    Before you all ask.. The hanging height for the Maxibright was 30cm, the MIGRO Economy was 30cm and the Growers Choice was 40cm (the growers choice reflector is narrower than the other 2 and needs a higher hanging height to keep the centre PAR level at 1,000)

      Great vid Shane...thank you. Is it safe to assume then that 30 cms (or 40 if using the Growers Choice set up) is an appropriate height off a plant canopy? I'm just concerned about UV and burning/bleaching. Been having some issues in my tent and trying to eliminate things to narrow down the source. Thanks dude...

    • @MIGROLIGHT
      @MIGROLIGHT  Před 5 lety +4

      @@TheMisanthrope. Hi, I calibrate the height using a quantum sensor which is easy because I just lower until the centre, and highest, PAR reading is about 1,000 PAR (the sun is 2,000 art mid day). The CMH spectrum has nly 0.7% UV v's the Sun whch has about 7% so there is little chance of any damage to you or your plants from a CMH lamp.

    Just want say i enjoy your videos. I got really into grow lights here lately since I started overwintering pepper plants. I have always grew with my old shop lights for starting seeds but had never grew through the winter. I got a cheap led light for Christmas and my peppers are really responding to it . I can't wait to get some extra money and try some higher end grow lights. It's kinda hard to spend a whole lot of money on them when I only grow vegetables.

    Thanks for the info , I've been using the 315 cmh for a few years now and I can tell you from experience that the cmh gives more potent buds ! I have run several of the same clone's for a few year's now so I know exactly how they grow under a 600-1000 watt hps , the 315 plants are more potent ! I'm not a scientist but I assume it's because of the high UV ! 4x4 room , 1 -315 and two 150 watt hps , replaced one 1000 hps , works for me 26c !

      @delosombres do better research when commenting: "Under high pressure, CMH bulbs can produce powerful light output that contains Ultraviolets (UV) like the sun.
      These UVs include UV-A, UV-B, UV-C, especially UV-B which is really helpful for plant growth, overall all 3 types of UV are harmful to human eyes.

    Why do you hang all the tested lights so that there's a big "hot spot" of 1000 PPFD in the center (usually 1x1 ft) and then the perimeter is just...crap. Can/could you merely adjust the height to get a more even spread of intensity? Maybe aim for 750-850 max in the center if possible?

    I have a question I am wanting to run 2 315 w cmh fixtures. I also have a 400w double ended hamelton balist and fixture I am thinking on running for a few hours a day for a more intense blue when vegging. The bulbs for the hamelton fixture are for a salt water aquarium they come in 10000 to 25000 k and you can also get them in a super blue or atinic . the bulbs are in full spectrum. they simulate the sun at a water depth of up to 25ft. with no loss of the benifical light and form what I understand the higher the k raiting the better the penetration. If used I will be placing this fixture between the 315w fixtures and running it for 4 hrs in the middle of the day with the idea to simulate high noon when the sun is in the highest position of day in the sky.. I have found little info on these types of bulbs. Like a color temp graph. The other question is can I clone under the 315 lights. Also Phillips now makes a 4200k bulb how soes this compare to your brand bulbs? Thank you for your time in answering my questions. I am new to growing and in a legal state... Martin

      More of the light must be bounced off the reflector with a vertical bulb so they are generally less efficient. Also the he reflector has to be deeper to fit the bulb which makes them higher and they require more vertical space. Overall a bad idea for grow lighting.

    • @MIGROLIGHT
      @MIGROLIGHT  Před 5 lety +1

      2ft x 2.5ft is 0.6m x 0.75m = 0.42m3. The PAR output from the CMH is about 500PAR so your average PAR would be 500/0.42 = 1,190. This is too high and need to be under 900. You need a 3ft x 3ft tent for a 315w CMH

    • @MIGROLIGHT

      Just about. You would get about 900 umols PAR over 2.25m2 which is 900/2.25 = 400 average PAR. That's pretty good but you could go to 900w CMH and 600 average PAR would be better.

  • @TheZepernick

    I have testet 315w CMH from Phillips around 4k and 3k. Both vertical and horizontal position. Horizontal wins. No doubt. A good reflector is needed.
    I have also testet 3k vs 4k CMH. From seed to harvest. The 4k provide the best over All result (more smell, more taste, stronger potency + 4k is superior in veg) the 3k bulb gives little more Mass Like 20-30 grams more harvest than the 4k. The bud density is the same. But 30 grams is nothing, compared to the quality from the 4k bulb.
    I rather lose 30g. Than letting go of the better bud quality.
    Another thing i have observed is, plants grown under CMH lights, produce much more resin Early in Flower compared to 600w HPS. Resin production is insane with these CMH lamps.
    Done under 315w in a 120x120x200cm tent. Never going back to hps in My flower Room.

Last video you run them on the same controller , this video you use your bulb on all units. Completely pointless , would you use the same drivers to compair leds ? Would you change diodes ? No , you compair one unit with another one and list the price of each like all your other "fair" comparison videos. Really shady Shane.
