The Impossible Screw will drive you nuts.

  • Welcome to my impossible screw.
    It's a small project you can do in your home shop even if you don't have a milling machine or lathe. A hacksaw and a file will do.
    It also makes a nice last minute present.
    If you try this I recommend to try it first with a brass screw.
    It's very important to deburr it carefully.
    Otherwise it will be locked in both directions.
    If you give this away I recommend to loctite a small second nut on so that the big nut cannot be moved away from the split point. It will drive anyone nuts who doesn't know the secret.

      Quinn Wilkinson went hunting in his property one day. shot a buck right on the neck in which the buck kept running and jumped the fence into onto my property. I was sleeping under a tree minding my own business when Quinn got close to the fence and demanded the deer. I saw the deer just relaxing there. I shock my head and explained that the deer was on my property. Quinn got mad demanding the buck. I was like ok. How about a game. Who ever can take a kick to the nuts the best keeps the buck. Since the buck is on my side I go first. Quinn accepted the challenged. “Ok come on” Quinn said. I got ready like a punter for the Dallas cowboys. Kicked him right in the balls in which Quinn screamed in a delightful pain. “Aahhhhhhhhhhjhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh fuck ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh. When he felt a little better he said . “Ok my turn” in which I replied “ all this shit for a buck, keep it”.

      Quite to the contrary, rabbits eat plenty of carrots and they probably have one of the worst eye sights.They excel at seeing in the dark, but during the day time they are almost blind as they can assumably only see shadows. I found this out when we had a rabbit population explosion in my neighbourhood. The rabbits would be calm as anything during the day as long as they "Knew" you were touching them, but would jolt if you made sudden movements with your arm or body. At night however, if I approached them from any angle, or made any sudden movements, they were calm and peaceful. Just thought I would share that due to it being a bad myth

    I think the angle is less important than the offset. The offset required is determined by the gap between the bolt and the nut. The offset must be able to force the two parts apart by slightly more than the gap. The angle needs to be just big enough to allow the required rotation to accomplish that. So there is a minimum offset and corresponding minimum angle, determined by the diameters and the gap.
    I think it would be possible to do it with ramps on each half. Turning one way, the ramp vertical faces push each other. Turing the other, the ramps force the halves apart, causing the threads to jam inside the bolt. But this would be much harder to make. That's what I thought was happening. Imagine a cut along a helical plate passing out from the center axis through a thread, making one revolution. Where the two ends of the cut overlap, another cut is made on a plane parallel with the axis from one thread to the other. The two pieces would separate cleanly. The amount of rotation to jam would depend on the tolerance of the threads and the pitch.

    I don't thing the angle is the critical figure. I think the proximity to the center is what determines the clamping force, so you want to be as close to the center as you can be without actually having the cut go through dead center. At least, that's what makes sense in my head.

      You got it 👏🏻👍

    • @pentachronic
      @pentachronic Před 5 lety +2

      I think the angle is critical as the thread height is related to angle. Turns per inch. So n degrees = n/360 * thread pitch. You need to ensure that you raise the height of the screw enough to cause it to jam against the thread play (whatever that is). It’s probably a small angle but I’m sure it’s relevant.

    • @squirts1
      @squirts1 Před 5 lety +3

      @@userwl2850 i dunno what you guys are on about, but it simply misaligns the threads between the two halves of the bolt. Essentially the same concept as a jam-nut - taking two nuts and trying to screw them against each other.

    • @awashbowler
      @awashbowler Před 5 lety +1

      I believe you are wrong. Think about if it was cut dead center. The screw would rotate about the natural center line of the fastener and not provide any outward force... just an axial offset since everything would remain concentric. Still, a very similar story if you are as close to center as possible. If the angle is off center significantly, then pivoting about that point will result in a non-concentric path taken by the screw threads and result in binding. Long story short, eccentricity is what is causing this to work, so cutting on center, or as you state, "as close to center as you can be" without cutting through dead center does not cause any eccentricity. Or at least not a noteworthy amount to make this work.

    • @andreww04
      @andreww04 Před 5 lety +3

      This is correct. Not an opinion either. To the non-believers: when you remove the 45 deg. slice, that removes 1/8 of the thread lead. It jams because after a 45 deg. turn, you are forcing a misligned thread. If anyone is familiar with how screws operate, they create mechanical advantages. I'll skip the details and say it would take much more friction to jam it concentrially than it would axially for that reason.

  • @kubeek
    @kubeek Před 5 lety
