Nice set up! Mine seems to be naturally going in this drection; more organized, smaller bins are easier to handle, and more automated to save time.
Your wormery really looks amazing compared to when you started rearranging it into your business!! Everything is so organized!! We kind of just did it off the top of our head and went as we went. Kind of like a Frankenstein.😅 I added a vibrating motor on the side. But machines like this only work when you’re castings are dryer.
Love seeing the updates. It's amazing how everyone have their own busy life but then we have worm hobbies.
Have you ever tried a ventless gas heater? We've used them for years and they have saved us numerous times during power outages. We use natural gas ones but they come in propane as well. Very energy efficient and the heat is fantastic and not drying at all .

It can get me into trouble, but not out of trouble lol. I'm into sustainability and food security. We've created vermiculture aquaponics system to grow greens using NFT channels. It's quite simple and very effective.

I’d love to see the mixed bin as a giveaway! I currently have a mix of Euros and reds (maybe some blues). I spent about 20 hours going through a bin to separate all the blues out, they have their own bin across the room. Blues are quick composers but I wanted a pure reds bin, one pure Euro and one with reds and Euros. The blues seem to be doing great on there own where they are. They also stay warmer, which they seem to like better since they compost faster now. Took 2 months to clear out a bin.

Space heater for the African night crawlers sounds like a great idea. I like the sifter that was a basket for your gift. I just got a waste basket that works great for sifting compost. 😁

I think using the BTI (mosquito dunks) in your watering can helps with the Springtails. It seems to have with mine.
Troy, What mix do you recommend to use in a spray bottle.
@@frederickjamison4549 I usually just use a watering can. They may stop up the sprayer pickup tube? They may not though because they dissolve very slowly. I don't really measure I put about a teaspoon to a gallon and allow it to sit overnight. Of course it doesn't dissolve overnight but hopefully allows some of the BTI to treat the area. As it disappears I add more.

That is a great job, love the separator.
Staple some plastic sheet around the bottom shaker tray. It will act as a chute or shield directing stuff that spills out the side to your trays. Since it's flexible plastic, it doesn't hamper installation or removal of the tray

We are doing another way of harvesting. Just take a juit bag soak in mustered cake dissolves water and cover the bin and all mature worm up and stuck on the bag.

Hello! I am fairly new to vermicomposting but I'm really enjoying it. How do you keep the worms from crawling out? I have a two-layer bin set up (holes in the bottom of top bin in case theirs excess moisture...there almost never is) and I notice them crawling up the sides and on the lid often. Once in a great while I'll see one on the floor (rarely). But it isn't unusual to see them go through the bottom holes and into the bottom bin.
Tune in to my other channel I am going to put videos about these type of containers. The other channel is the Composting worm lady. I’ve always said that if a worm is happy and its environment it usually will not crawl out, That being said having a light on somewhere even if it’s a damn one will usually keep them in. It is not uncommon to find one once in a while on the floor

How can you tell that your worms are dying off / population is reducing? I had a bin of mostly red wigglers (assuming some blues). I saw the occasional dried up worm and a few of them escaped the bin and dried up; but I didn't know that all along they had been dying off until I did a full count.
I started with 250 and now am down to 60 in an experimental bin. I used small rodent "all natural" bedding for them that started the whole mess and didn't break down over 8 months. They also were not producing many cocoons.
I can usually tell when my population is diminishing because I look at them quite often. You need to look at that bedding and see if it had some kind of chemical in it. Sometimes chemicals will kill your worms for sure. Also try to mix up the bedding with other things such as cardboard or newspaper. If you have some dry leaves mix those in also. I’m going to be selling dry leaves on my website this year again because people want them. It’s good to give you worms a variety of things. I dry bin will also definitely kill your worms make sure your moisture levels are good.
Sometimes they just die and it’s a mystery and you won’t figure it out. I’ve had that happen to me in the past. But don’t give up just keep trying.
Can you tell me what size the mesh is in your sifting trays? The top ones look like 1/4 inch but I can't really tell on the bottom ones. I really love what you're doing and have learned a lot so far watching your videos.
Sure and thank you 😊 the bottom mesh is 1/8. It catches most cocoons and babies

You have to build it😄 My husband and I just came up with the idea after watching many CZcams videos and seeing what others are doing. I’m sure you can build one. I will say it’s a lot cheaper than buying one
They are slow on the Mango because it's a high citrus fruit. It's too acidic.

your worms dont try to crawl out? do i actually need a lid or do you keep the lights on in that room all the time?
If the worms are happy in their bedding they usually won’t take off. Blue worms on the other hand they like to leave the bins. because this is my business, I leave the lights on. When it was just a hobby, I usually wouldn’t leave it on.
I just started using a Worm Factory 360. Seems I can't control the heat. I'm using Red Wigglers. An recommendations?

Thank you so much for all the great information! About 20 years ago I tried to keep worms (red wigglers) in a little three tiered system that I think was called "The Worm Factory". I was not successful. Before I give it another try, I am doing some research and want to set everything up to have happy and healthy worms in advance of buying them 🪱
I started with the same one 20 years ago and I love all the towers they have out there now. It’s funny because I am going to start a series on basic worm farming with towers😄

And Usually won’t hurt the worms unless they are fire ants or red ants. They are just a nuisance I would apply diatomaceous earth food grade kind. They don’t like it it won’t hurt the worms

I'm sorry for asking but I'm really new to this, what is a "springtail"?
That’s OK if you’re new, don’t be embarrassed to ask anything. I Springtail it’s like a little white composting friend of the worms. When your bin is very moist, you will see them crawling in there. They don’t hurt the worms or anything they compost just like the worms. They are all friends. With that being said, sometimes they get larger numbers and will compete for food when that happens you just need to fluff up your bedding and let it dry a little bit and they disappear.

I have been raising worms for probably 20 years also, but my method is much simpler than yours.
I let the worms do all the work.
I grow in towers and yes I grow in the $100 (Amazon) towers, but I've been doing this forever so I don't really care about the cost. Back in the day I scored half a dozen free towers, so that kind of offsets ongoing costs.
Anyway, I feed almost 100% soft material like melons and overripe apples and bananas. I also give them avocados, but everything I feed, I bury, so when you lift the lid off, it just looks like manicured bedding material.
Burying the food reduces the occurrence of those little flying things, I guess they are fruit flies or gnats or something, but anyway, if you pile bedding over the top of the food, no gnats.
I regularly arrange the towers with four layers.
The very bottom one is a liquid reservoir with a faucet on the side, where "worm tea" can be harvested, when the liquid level inside is above the spigot level. I use the worm tea on my garden, diluted 10 to 1 with water.
Next up is a bin full of Coco coir and or sometimes shredded newsprint.
The next bin up is the same and the top bin is where all the fun happens. That's where I feed the little fellows.
To harvest, I hang a 60 watt light bulb on, about a foot above the top bin with the lid off. This drives the little guys to the next bin. Once I have determined Elvis has left the building, all I do is dump that tray out into an empty plastic tray large enough to hold it and still be only about half full, then I fill the former top tray with new bedding and put it on the bottom of the tower stack, just above the reservoir, moving everybody up one level.
That's it. That's all I do, well, . . . except for shifting out the castings and the eggs and stuff.
For that I use some gold panning classifiers I got on Amazon as well. They were pricey also, but like I said, I don't really care about that side of it.
Eggs and cocoons and the like, gathered by sifting through different sized screens, go into the second from the top bin.
Usually, the worms go down to the third bin, the lowest one with bedding, and go potty, which eventually works its way back up to the top of the tower.
The separated castings go into my garden or into friends' gardens. I just give them away.
I know, that's crazy, but that's how I roll.
BTW I raise only red wrigglers.
EDIT: if you purchase the green worm towers from amazon, like I do, they come with six bins. I usually only use four at a time and I have already described how I do that, but that doesn't mean you can't use all six; I just find it easier to use four at a time. If you decide to use more than four, you'll have to do a little homework and figure out where they're pooping. Using just four bins, one is a swimming pool and the other three makes figuring out what's happening where, a no brainer.
Oh my gosh! Thank you for the amazing explanation. I have several towers that I play with for my personal use not for business. I raised Worms in Towers for 20 years now and I absolutely love them. I’m like you I don’t care if they cost $100 on Amazon I enjoy them and I get them also. My husband buys them for me for special occasions also. One year he got me the one factory 360 for Christmas and I started crying😂 I was so happy!!!! I have gone up to 6 to 7 trays one time I can’t remember on one of my towers.
I have raised every worm species in a tower it is duop. The latest one my far has been got me was a purple frog tower, I love it!!!!
