Yes African Nightcrawlers are my favourites because of their size and activity. I feed the same way when I do dry feedings.
Nicely when I started breeding European nightcrawlers I thought they would be more active. The red wigglers always impressed and African nightcrawlers

Night crawlers don't handle the Florida heat either.
When I buy worms, I prefer getting smaller worms in the mix. When purchasing by the pound, you get more worms for the money. Now, if I was buying bait, it would be a different matter.
Absolutely! Bait is better suited for Europeans even though I’ve seen people fish with red wigglers too and be successful
Ive seen though you still can buy bait sized worms by the pound. Some websites sell worms by the pound thats all sizes, and then they may offer bait size worms by the pound which maybe twice as much since theyve feed them a lot of other things maybe chicken mash or soy or something. I forgot the website but i think price of bait worms was twice as much. I think theyd take adult worms and put them in a different bin to just grow out even more.
Great video. You have an interesting approach that I haven't seen before. I am new to this obviously and have a question. Having already experienced a small dose of protein poisoning on a batch of worms that I received, found just a few on the top surface with this condition after about 3 days using a dry mix, what are the advantages to using your technique of clumping the mix serving wet? Any help is appreciated. Thanks for posting your videos. They are a big help.
Serving the food wet helps them eat it faster for some reason plus they like it more. When you clump it you give them choices whether they want to be near it or not. It’s hard to come back from protein poisoning , usually worms die. At the first sign you need to get the worms out of there ASAP and to fresh new bedding and hope for the best.

Thank you so much. We get the larger gray bins from Sam’s Club and The smaller gray bins from websturant store.com They are an online store that sells restaurant supplies. The smaller ones are 20 x 15 x 5 and if you buy a certain amount we paid I think $3.10 each. Or something close to that.
No my worms don’t escape. When worms are happy in their homes they won’t run because they won’t have a reason to. It took me years to figure that out😂 I do like to put newspaper on the surface with bubble plastic. Or I use worm blankets made of burlap which I sell on my website. Helps to keep moist inside

Definitely looks like dry to moist, not moist to wet is the way to go.
Grinded egg shells and organic non GMO chick feed. I was telling my worm supplier about it. My worms are big.
I give mine chicken feed also. Another trick I know is to feed them cricket meal, only a little and not everyday. Makes them big

Yes red wigglers are little guys, I’ve known people who fish with red wigglers in lakes on Little hooks. Canadian night crawlers are awesome. They need refrigeration and I can’t store them

I would say it takes about nine weeks for them to hatch and then I bought another and maybe nine to reach maturity. They’re size all depends on their environment and how many you have in the container. If you have a lot in a container they’re not gonna grow very big

According to your experience, which is better: to put the red wiggler und European night crawler in the same bin, or to separate them? In which case can we produce more worms and better Vermicompost?

I keep mine separate but I know people that keep them together on the worms do great. Red wigglers by far out breed the European nightcrawler In my own experience. The casting quality depends on a lot of things such as what you feed them and the sifting process

If you have a deep bin it is good to have them together as the crawlers will process the food and bedding down towards the bottom of the bin while the reds will process the stuff near the top of the bin. It's a win/win situation.
Great video. I have been using this for 4 weeks now and have certainly noticed a difference in worm size. You mention not to feed to young worms, I'm curious why not and what you would recommend feeding a nursery? Thanks
I feed my young table scraps/ a little worm chow. The fattening recipe might be too high in protein but you know what? I’ve been giving some to my young also😆 and they are fine. Just a little amount and not daily. A worm farmer I know told me not to give it too the young but I was curious. Does make worms fat😆
That’s awesome, thanks for sharing your experience and knowledge with us… I recently bought the magic worm ranch from sportsman’s warehouse and I put 4 cups of big red worms in it and I already have some cocoons in there. I’ve only had it for a couple weeks. I did over feed them once and had to take some of the food out. It started to smell bad and I had a couple worms die. But since I got all that extra food out it just smells like fresh dirt again now… I’ve gotta get some of those African night crawlers! I subscribed to your channel too… 😉

Do your worms crawl away...I had mine outside..they were European night crawlers..on the ground...now they are gone...😪😪😪😔
My worms are indoors in bins and my worm towers. Rarely do they do that. It happened to me one time when I first got them and someone in my house accidentally turn the light out.
Where did you have them outdoors? In a bin or in the ground?
If I want to sell to bait shop how can I put them in the containers to not die? What the pros do?

I know a man (now retired) who owned a bait shop in Anniston Alabama. He basically made a living off of crickets and worms and of course other fish gear, but worms were his bread and butter. Mr. Hinds had 9 large wooden worm bins. As far as I know, he raised ENC's and ONLY fed them on top with alfhalfa pellets wetted with water after sprinkling on top. I always wanted to raise worms but only had time to keep me enough to fish with. I am now retired and have a goal of making a hundred dollars a week after expenses. We have worms here that look like a snake when crawling. I am almost sure they are the "Alabama jumpers". Have you ever raised them? Are they legal to sell to other states? My bins are mostly "indian blue worms" as far as I can tell.
I think I know who you’re talking about. I’ve seen some of his bins. Amazing work he did. Yes the Worms you were talking about are Alabama jumpers. They are called snake Worms jumping worms and they are an invasive species, here in Indiana where I am the agriculture department recommends we kill them when we see them. I haven’t raised them for that reason and honestly I wouldn’t do it.

African nightcrawler, they cannot tolerate the cold. They like it warm

Are you keeping the worms separated by breed because you are selling them by breed or will they eat each other? 🤔 If we buy them because some eat more paper but others eat the scraps faster can we have them together in the same bin?
I keep breeds separate in separate containers.
When I sell a mixed I pre-mix them right before shipping if I sell a mix

I think the ones you’re asking about are Eisenia Hortensis which are European Nightcrawler’s
I don’t know for sure, though without seeing them or the packaging

Hi. I’m interested in raising bait worms for grandkids fishing. However. I leave for the winter months. Do worms hibernate in the winter. If so. How do I keep them alive for 4-5 months
On their own?
Yes, you can leave European nightcrawlers and pure red wigglers. If your red wigglers are mixed with blue worms, the blue worms died through the winter and their cocoons turned to mush. That’s why it is important to have pure stock. You can layer food scraps or Manure and loads of straw and hay, and I believe they will be OK. They also go deep into the Earth and come back in the spring.

Mine to get big by keeping a less in the bin, I am measuring a quarter pound, or sometimes a little less for a bin, the size of 20 x 15 x 5 making sure the moisture is more than usual and feeding them regular
I don’t have anymore bins. I’ve taken two cups and did put some in 5 Other bins for now. I don’t have space. My husband is thrilled. Yah right! @@theresarothenberger2264 that’s awesome! You just do what you have to do. I saw someone raise worms in a bucket, not a Home Depot bucket, but a bucket that you mop the floor with any container works. I actually found those at AliExpress but I have also seen them on eBay and I believe Amazon.

How often should you turn the soil?
It depends if you are raising the worms as a hobby or for sale. As a hobby I would fluff up their bedding a couple times a week. As a business they like it more moist and you try not to do that for at least 21 days unless you think there’s a problem
@@TheGardenAndWormLady It's definitely a hobby. I just started last night and very small scale (I'm using a bubble gum tub/bucket). I think I need to redo the process because I didn't use bedding. I used organic garden soil that has the sticks in it and used a spray bottle to moisten it. I want to grow them for fishing.
How fast do those 1/4 lb worms go throgh the feed amount you put in ?
Usually within two or three days

You can tell what it looks like it’ll look like coffee grinds, but every three weeks when I reset the breeders, I give them fresh bedding
Do you add lime to all of your peat bedding?
Yes dolomite, I measured the vanity Pete Moss for acidity. Ideal is seven.

Anytime I work with peat moss I always add it no matter what else I add. Now when I work with coconut coir, I don’t add dolomite lime because I feel it doesn’t need it.

Everything good, they are resting until the Autumn season. I start reselling in September approximately. I’ll probably retire doing this.🤩
I found the video. I shy away from peat moss because it is so devastating to the economy, and so non-sustainable. Coconut coir is renewable and sustainable. I have bookmarked the recipe and will make it substituting coconut for Peat.
Edit: I thought this video showed the recipe I was looking for. However it isn't. On the video I watched today you said you can feed them the same as my other recipe minus the powdered milk. This doesn't have powdered milk in it so it can't be the one I'm looking for
I agree I also use coconut Coir at times, in the rotation video I mention the bedding that is posted in this video. The only difference is the food recipe will have powdered milk in it and the bedding will not. remember you have to harvest every 21 days and get rid of the bedding
