I'm starting small, too. I got 30 ENCs at the beginning of August, 30 more a couple weeks later. Discovered the bin I was using was waaay too big. Downsized to about 1/20 the size. A couple weeks later I finally found a packet of 50 E. fetida and set them up in another small bin. I can only hope they do as well as yours have! My basement is only about 55°F right now, though, so they're not real lively. Not sure reproducing is on their agenda at present. 🤔 Hoping they'll celebrate spring warming with lots of cocoons. I'll be watching with interest, to see how this experiment of yours turns out. 😊

I’m running my worm bin on the wet side. I mean really wet and they are multiplying like crazy. I have to check a little more often to make sure I don’t over water, but WOW.
That is great!! I tend to run my Outdoor Worm Bin wetter in the summer as it sits directly on the ground and drains very well. The summer is always my explosive population time with my bins and the worms love the moisture as long as the bin breaths well. It sounds like you are running your bin to perfection with well timed checkins to make sure your parameters are all "in the green"!! Great job, keep it up!! 🍂🍁🍂 feeding, nice Easter 🥚!! I think I'll see if Susan will put plastic ontop of her bin. Seemed a bit on the dryer side, still moist but the some of the bigger chucks of cardboard were not as moist. I should have cut them in half before I froze them, because cutting them frozen doesn’t work so well lol. I loaded mine up this weekend with potato peels from the thanksgiving dinner. I wonder if potato peels are fast or slow food. Thanks for the video.
I'm sure they are gonna love the frozen cucumbers!! Potato peals are a weird one...they tend to mat down like wet paper making them a little harder for the worms to get too, but when I just put a few in spread out they go pretty quick!! That is a great question!! Anywhere there is moisture the worms will use it as a highway to roam. So if you have a lid that helps the water to condense and drip down the sides or stay on the lid, the worms will make there way up there. You can take the lid off and keep a light on the bin for 48 to 72 hours (a ceiling light in a room will work if it is an indoor bin) and this will let them know to stay down below and probably dry out the top and sides. The worms in this particular bin rarely climb up the walls of the bin or get on the lid because there are such big air holes drilled in it, however my VermiHut has worms climbing up the sides and under the lid all the time because it stays moist. I just accept it. They never escape because they can sense the dry air when they get to the edges or any of the air holes. Now if a lot of worms are piling up at the juncture of the lid and sides, as if they are trying to get away from something, then it maybe something in the bin, like over feeding or fermentation or ammonia arising in the bin (you would be able to smell foul odor if this was the case). I hope this helps, I have a feeling it is just the worms getting curious in moist conditions. if they are not escaping then it is not a problem. Do you think I could use Dolomite instead of egg shells? We don't eat eggs in my house so I'm looking for a substitute grit. Dolomite is supposed to help with maintaining PH also. Thanks!
I have not tried it myself, so I can't speak to it being used for grit. But I know some people us it in their bins. I don't usually recommend sand because my soil is so full of it here in Florida, but it is another alternative to grit besides egg shells. If you use sand or dolomite you really don't need to put that much in there at all since worms reuse the grit over and over again. I put more egg shell grit in for the worms than they need because I know it will end up in my soil providing extra nutrients. Another source of grit is pulverized sea shells...but I don't think I would try to put them in my blender😀 I hope this helps!! Thanks so much for the great question and thanks for watching!!🪱🪱🪱

Thats a lot of banana for that bin! You have hungry worms. Btw, do you check in the immediate area if mites are crawling around? I had some sticky bug catchers laying around mine and found then all over it! But not a few feet away on same table where had other food drying from the garden, onions, etc. Now into mite control mode. 🪱🪲

@@Vermicompost I put these yellow sticky traps all around the outside laying flat on the table and surprised me to find them. Too small for us to see them otherwise. They seem to be moving from bin to bin, but not going anywhere else....much. My solution is to lay diatomaceous earth around the feet in those cups that come with the Vermihut.

How to keep my worms off the walls and under the lid? Need a little help with this.

Do you think I could use Dolomite instead of egg shells? We don't eat eggs in my house so I'm looking for a substitute grit. Dolomite is supposed to help with maintaining PH also. Thanks!
I have not tried it myself, so I can't speak to it being used for grit. But I know some people us it in their bins. I don't usually recommend sand because my soil is so full of it here in Florida, but it is another alternative to grit besides egg shells. If you use sand or dolomite you really don't need to put that much in there at all since worms reuse the grit over and over again. I put more egg shell grit in for the worms than they need because I know it will end up in my soil providing extra nutrients. Another source of grit is pulverized sea shells...but I don't think I would try to put them in my blender😀 I hope this helps!! Thanks so much for the great question and thanks for watching!!🪱🪱🪱

Thats a lot of banana for that bin! You have hungry worms. Btw, do you check in the immediate area if mites are crawling around? I had some sticky bug catchers laying around mine and found then all over it! But not a few feet away on same table where had other food drying from the garden, onions, etc. Now into mite control mode. 🪱🪲

@@Vermicompost I put these yellow sticky traps all around the outside laying flat on the table and surprised me to find them. Too small for us to see them otherwise. They seem to be moving from bin to bin, but not going anywhere else....much. My solution is to lay diatomaceous earth around the feet in those cups that come with the Vermihut.
