God knows how many people I am going to piss off by saying this, but am I the only person who thinks that the Atari 2600 hasn't aged that gracefully over the years? I mean don't get me wrong, I definitely respect the history and legacy it had behind it. I do see it as an objectively good console, and I can certainly see why people love it. I'm sure that for it's time it was an amazing novelty just to be able to play video games at home and not having to go out to an arcade. The video game console industry just wouldn't exist today had it not been for the 2600.
That being said, while there are still some good games in it's library (most of them being from Activision and a handful of arcade ports that were simple enough to translate well on the system's hardware like Missile Command, Space Invaders and Asteroids) there's also a lot of lackluster shovelware due to a severe lack of quality control (You can definitely see why the U.S. market crash of 1983 occurred, though this is understandable as the industry was still very young at the time) and games that tried to push the hardware more than what it was actually capable of. The VCS's hardware was very much outdated by the time it really became popular in 1980 (it was released in 1977, and spent quite a while in development before it's release, which again, was understandable as it was the first video game console to become widely well known and popular), and ports of later arcade games that used more advanced technology like Battlezone, Tempest, Crystal Castles and Zaxxon didn't really translate all that well due to the limited capabilities of the VCS.
I dunno, I'm just not a huge fan of pre-third generation consoles. I acknowledge what they did for the gaming industry and I can understand why people love them, but the dated and very primitive nature of them doesn't really jive with my tastes. I could be just biased as I wasn't there at the time to fully appreciate them, (though I did have a few Atari plug-n-plays as a kid) but eh.
Also I've never understood the hatred for E.T., it's really no worse than the average 2600 game.

Funfact: The E.T. Atari game was programmed by Atari's best-selling programmer; the same guy who did Yar's Revenge and other multi-million selling games. E.T. just sucked because it's not possible to make a good E.T. game. Think about it; *really* think about it; can you even think of one good mechanic for an E.T. game on the Atari 2600?
Also, the landfill wasn't all E.T. carts. They buried all sorts of games (including one copy of Adventure, which that documentary director kept for himself), because the company was going under; some of the greatest Atari games were buried there too. But, I think we've all seen the documentary, so whatever.

I remember having a lot of these games. I was about 4 or 5 at the time I had my Atari. The games were kind of scary to play back then. Playing in the middle of the night and those creepy soundtracks.....
The best part is, that PES14 on PS2 looks good.

Fighter? Is that this one insane game I heard about, where some Navy tech dumped all his experience of real fighter planes into an Atari game? If so, it's really difficult. Suppose to use all those switches on the Atari, itself, as part of the flight experience. Why, I suspect that you've got to physically throw a switch to bring up the landing gear, right after take off. So...wouldn't emulate so well.

Technically 2 people died from heart attacks when playing Berserk. The first person died after obtaining and posting the high score for it on the arcade machine version's leaderboards. The second died after beating the first person's score and posting it. That's why the game became so famous for killing people.

Elk Attack? that game is exactly like Electric Yo-yo by Taito but under a different name. Taito released a lot of other games but under different names, apparently. On The Ball on SNES is actually 'Cameltry' and Flipull on NES is actually 'Plotting'

I honestly didn;t know anyone else who went straight from NES to N64 before. Everyone my age rages on about the SNES, but, I skipped that one... oddly enough skipped the gamecube and went from N64 to Wii...
I went from NES to N64 and then back to SNES[got it as a gift] then to GameCube, Wii, etc.
Between them there was always either a portable or two or some console outside of Nintendo. The Sega Genesis comes to mind, I got a ton of mileage out of that one.
although I had a NES, it didn't work so I didn't play many NES games unless it was at a cousins house. for me it was time order from SNES, N64, the boxumajig to what today would be the Wii U and me playing as the os-so adorable Lana in Hyrule Warriors.

I don't know why that version is just called "Bros." The normal version is actually called Mario Bros. "Bros." does also refer to a Super Mario Bros. clone on Atari 400/800 however, but it is not this.
