Medically BANNED from the NBA? Isaiah Austin & Marfan Syndrome
Vložit
- čas přidán 22. 05. 2024
- Isaiah Austin was diagnosed with Marfan Syndrome just prior to the 2014 NBA draft and was then medically banned from being being able to play in the NBA based on the danger of this condition.
In this video I'm going to teach you why it wasn't safe for him to play in the NBA because of how Marfan Syndrome can effect the heart and lead to potentially deadly complications.
He is now playing professionally overseas, but only time will tell if he'll be cleared to give the NBA another shot.

I think I got rid of the jumpiness with just re-uploading in case anyone got double notifications. Hope you all enjoy!
Brian Sutterer MD notification gang. btw watch recent vid
It’s not sports related, but how would Marfan Syndrome force Austin Carlisle to stop doing screaming vocals for the band Of Mice and Men?
Brian Sutterer MD do a video on shreef O’Neal’s surgery
We don't know any Info about what they did though
It was mentioned I had a heart murmur, is this something related to dilated aorta? My mother had dilated aorta which is replaced.
When you learn more from this than science class
Haha love it
Haha relatable 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
Brian Sutterer MD It’s true, you make learning this stuff really interesting.
@@BrianSuttererMD medicine is science . There not gonna educate u this much in a hs class .
High schools classes are bull shit compared to college, especially when it comes to AP courses
I just want to say getting you to explain all these injuries makes it easier to understand how severe most of these injuries are and I hope people begin to respect the athletes for choosing to protect themselves over the game they play
Thank you
I agree. I think these videos bring to light how much professional athletes put on the line every day, and we need to respect them for making decisions for their own good.
Bosh didn't have a heart problem. I covered his situation in a previous video
@@rickmorty2171 ball is life
Isaiah Austin had a stint here in the Philippines and considered to be a Naturalized player. He is very skilled. Too bad he didn't make it to NBA.
@Papi Dawg I'm sure i had seen him play for us in FIBA asia cup. Together with other prospect.
@Papi Dawg HE DID PLAY FOR PHILIPPINES NATIONAL TEAM DURING ASIA CHAMPIONSHIP CUP 2017
he played on a ball club from the phillippines that participated on fiba asia champions cup, ands its true he is once considered as naturalized candidate.
He was drafted
Hey I got marfans too, I met Austin at a marfans conference he’s a really cool dude!
It's really great to see how he's dedicated time to bringing awareness to it and such !
I got diagnosed this morning so I’m here learning too

Dr. Brian is a smart man. You wonder why these kind of videos were not there earlier. Keep doing you, Dr. Much love and support from Kenya!
Great channel dude! really helps clear up many injuries and how serious they are or how unserious they are.
Simple and concise, liking your content dude, good job!
Fascinating video!
Thank you for the information
Great video, I have marfans syndrome and lucky didn’t play my senior year of basketball, just after the season I went to Stanford and had my aortic root replaced as well at my aortic valve. Probably wouldn’t of made it through that season.
Yoooooo I remember this dude! The NBA showed class by making him the official guest at the draft though. Just really dope
I need longer videos. You are insanely good at explaining such complicated concepts. Binging 🤯
Another big sign is that Isaiah lost his eye after dunking a ball in high school and still has a fake eye to this day
Yep..likely related
I remember that story, didn't know he was the same guy.
Whoaaa. What? How would that even happen???
I have Marfan’s. I was 6 feet tall at 13. Played basketball for 2 years in high school but switched to softball because I liked it better. Looking back I realize how lucky I am I didn’t collapse on the court. So many teenage athletes have Marfan and don’t know it. Thanks for raising awareness with this video.
How did they find it? Sports physical or did you know already ?
I have a good friend with Marfan’s. How it effects the body is fascinating! Thanks for covering this topic.
Im a 3rd medical student. Also a sports fan. Your videos are helpful and informative. Keep making more bro
I have abnormalities in my ribcage due to a fracture and at one point before that what it was recognized being my doctor's sent me to a lab to do Conditioning tests and an Ultrasound on my heart to see if I had this, I learned a lot about the heart in those tests and I appreciate these videos theyre always great.
You’re a pretty smart dude. Definitely good at explaining stuff.
Thank you, that's the goal, simple but better than just searching online
I love watching your videos so much I learn so much from you
Oo
I have Marfan syndrome. I've ripped my latissimus dorsi and my left shoulder. I have an almost dislocated hip with hip impingement. My clavicle is raised up on one side almost like quasi modo but not obviously bad like that. I have a cleft chest and was born with a collapsed lung and I must say that physical activity is a must if you hope to do anything with this problem. Sure you are always more flexible than everyone but without physical activity you would fall apart much faster. Strength training has kept me together more or less. I've had heart pain and lung pain before so I think I should get my heart checked out now that I've seen this video! Thanks, it could be a life saver.
Great video and channel.
First heard of Marfan Syndrome from Austin Carlisle of Of Mice and Men (Great band, terrible book). Never really knew much about it until now. These videos really should be used in middle school and high school science classes. Everything is extremely understandable and the pace is fantastic.
Seth Kasso read that book last year for my english class. While I hated how depressing the book is, the way it is written and the diction used really was revolutionary for the time
The band and the book are great. Reread it. You will catch more from it.
Great book mediocre band
I follow your CZcams series and There are very interesting . I have a question..... does the Achilles injury link to the size of the calf ? I notice most athletes that have the Achilles injury don’t have a big calf ( very muscular) . Thanks
Great video.
Quick question, how come this didn’t really cause him any issues throughout his high school and college career? Was he just lucky?
Yep. He might have noticed some intermittent stuff with heart palpitations or getting more fatigued. Also, the story of when he lost his eye is also likely related to how Marfan effects the eye
Brian Sutterer MD Ahh gotcha man, keep up the good work btw, love the content!
I really enjoy your vids.
Glad to hear it, thanks!
Your welcome
Ran into this video because it's recommended, I remember Isaiah Austin being heartbroken after the diagnosis and the NBA gave him a honorary draft spot.
My curiosity surfaces again as I've heard people say Boban Marjanovic also has Marfan's, is that true? If yes, why is he medically cleared to play in the NBA when Austin isn't?
Doc thanks for bringing that up. I think you should mention that Marfan is a spectrum of disorder. I have all the signs of Marfan (myopia, finger & thumb sign, scoliosis, pectus excavatum, etc) to the point that my Marfan systemic score is above 7. But no family history of marfan (genetic mutation is possible) and observed aortic dilation. So, my doctor cleared me to lift weights and play sports. I still get echocardiogram every year though. To this point I really don't know if I have it or not. But I like to think that I don't have it so I live like a normal person.
how tall are you
That's so interesting! I have exactly the same symptoms (8-9 points) and will get checket for my aorta dilation soon... And I guess I will see my cardiologist each year too, just in case of the aorta expanding... How is your health now? Did you get checked for a mutation in FBN1? :)
@@Julia-wg4yx I'm in a good health I get checked every 1-1.5 years for echo and so far nothing's wrong. I have probably been checked for echo 5-6 times now since I was 18, now I'm 25. No I dont get it because it is pointless as the doc said since my systemic score is above 7
@@Trenacetate43 Bro even i have marfan syndrome, and I am 25 years old. what is your height and aortic root size?

Just stumbled upon this video and heard many similarities to myself. After looking up more about Marfan Syndrome I found myself fitting so many instances of the symptoms. I'm going to talk to my doctor about this.
RoloEdits damn bro I know it’s only been a week but hope u got your answers 🙏🙏💯
Great video, but why no mention of potential treatments such as a David’s procedure? I had one myself after diagnosis of Aortic Aneurysm age 24 and now I’m fully cleared to return to sport.
Sorry im 2 years late but could you explain what David’s procedure is?
i think i saw his story, very sad he can't play in the NBA, hes blind from one eye too so playing in the NBA is even more difficult
Anyway you could do a video on Hollywood browns foot injury?
...So he didn't even know he had this syndome till he was in the drafting process???
It is a possibility, symptoms don't occur the same way in every person. I was lucky to be diagnosed when I was a baby, but even then I still have had a spinal fusion and a retinal reattachment. The symptoms and signs are radically different person to person, it's common for most people to have it go unnoticed until well into their mid 20s.
How has he been doing so well then? Hasn’t he been playing basketball for a while, you think something would have happened by now?
this guy is a way better teacher than my bio professor💯
Didn't he have a retina detachment when he was young
That would suck to be on the verge of earning millions in your dream job, and for it to all be taken away because of a medical condition that you cant do anything about.
Should do a q and a video
I wish you were my anatomy teacher lmfao
I want to be like you and you help understand what happens
1:18, tsk tsk........they didn't follow the house blueprints....smh 🙄🤦🏻♀️🤣😂
Great revision for my med exams 😂
Could a sleeve be placed around the aorta to prevent it from dilating to the point of rupture, or would the aorta simply detach from the heart?
Oh shit, we got a heart surgeon in the building!
Advent Society just use sticky tape
I was diagnosed with it as a baby and was so heartbroken when I found out I had to stop playing basketball
Another banger
I read that he lost vision in one eye. I know he got hit in the eye with a baseball but could the vision loss still be related to his Marfan syndrome?
Yea it's definitely possible. The eyes are a common issue in Marfan
Why don’t you work for the NBA as a doctet or for a team?
Because hes a resident right now i.e. still training
@@ExpulsoPlayz still acquiring clout. He just doesn't have the ego of an attending
hopefully he doesn't join a team, otherwise it will br tougher for him to upload (and probably won't be allowed to talk about players from other teams), and being in the NBA would probably make him stay quiet as well, not to mention he would be full of work
A lot of weird statements in this video like projected high NBA pick (was projected mid 2nd round) and that "athletes with the heart condition". Anyone with this disease is NOT an athlete anymore, tragic but true
I have mild marfan syndrome i go for eco manytimes hopefully my heart is like a normal person's heart
me too
So he plays abroad? Waw
He is playing overseas and averaging 35 ppg that’s insane, g league soon if he convinces nba his is not as bad?
Well jimmer average 36+ ppg over seas... since joining the suns hes shooting 9% fg and 0% 3p% and averaging 3ppg...
What would happen if he got a heart transplant, would that fix the bursting of the ascending aorta?
Ryan DaSilva i would assume that the elasticity would eventually run out as the cells are replaced
great video bro, love all your vids! Im on my grind to 1k!
Keep it up! Took me 1 year to get to 1k, then 3 months to 50 lol so you never know what can happen

Google said that if your wingspan is very long then I might have a sign of Marfins syndrome. I’m 16, 6’1, 155lbs, and a 7’2 wingspand so I’m scared/confused because I’ve had major lung issues that put me in the hospital from ages 5-12, ima have to get checked out.
How did it go? Do you have it? I will get checked for it too in June..
i have all of these symptoms, and workout, run, literally do everything but im fine.. ill have to go to the doctor
This is why I say college players should be paid. Dude literally put his life on the line to play. What if he died on the court.
His choice. It was his responsibility to make sure his body was healthy. Shouldnt have been playing basketball at all
@@travis33425 apparently you didn't watch the video. This is a very uncommon situation. How would anyone suspect his condition?
@@ritterporter4089 well you then just contradicted your original statement. If it's such a rare situation, why should you apply this situation to the arguement that all players should be paid?
@@travis33425 1)not ALL players. Maybe the top 10 players in a division 1 school. Tickets cost $2600 a seat but a player doesn't get a penny? That's okay?
2) they don't care if he's healthy, they just throw him away and grab another kid. Instead of taking the time and looking like they did in the combine. In the NBA they think "my team is paying this guy 20M over the next four years, we better do our due diligence and make sure he's healthy since we're investing in him".
Without delving into the pay issue. Most colleges have medical facilities on site. It would be great if students enrolled could get health care.
NBA just doesn't want that risk. Michael Phelps has marfan syndrome yet because one of the greatest Olympians.
He's playing in ice cube's Big 3 league now...
You and dr. Mike . That would be cool 🙂
I’ve got Marfan Syndrome...
Here in July 19th, 2021 watching the Big 3 as he plays & looks a bit winded. That’s what got me here.
Is there any medicine to stop height in marfan. It's not genetic.
Ohh so that's where John Wick stabbed Common lol
Thats not fair, they sholud let him play if he loves it... if you have Marfan and Akromegaly at the same time there is some kind of compensation....
Could marfans cause an aortic aneurysm?
@William Burnette Yes
The nba was just looking after there assets from a future lawsuit ✨
This is like deja vu haha
Idk what happened that first time. Looked perfect on my computer but uploaded wierd
I recently lost an uncle due to marfan syndrome, he never went to the hospital 😔
Age?
Yo I got PCD does that affect athletics
I'm pretty sure he was medical cleared to play again 🤔

He was actually cleared to play in the NBA but no team is interested in him
Where did you read that?
Apparently he was cleared in like 2016 to play by a dr but I believe the nba still won’t let him play.
I also have Marfan syndrome that cut my basketball career short.
:(
he is risking his life he should stop playing
Or it could be argued that he’s LIVING his life
Also i’m a new youtuber so lemme know what you think of my videos!
How did the college allow him to play when he had this condition all the time?
Crazy.
The school didn't realise and neither did his doctors. Marfan syndrome is hard to diagnose and often goes unnoticed. I was lucky enough to be diagnosed at 4. Signs of Marfan syndrome include thin and slender body, elongated limbs, blurry vision, and spine curvature (kyphosis or scoliosis). It does not always appear immediately and it can be either mild or severe for some people.

I paused the video and made some food. But when I came back I forgot about the video so it just started with "Just like a house or how you make a meal."

How do you get to be that old and not know you have Marfans? Its such an outwardly disease. Maybe its because my best friend and some family members have it, but it's VERY easy to look at somebody and realize they aren't just tall and lanky, there's something else there.
Marfan’s wasn’t even on the radar of most family doctors until the early 2000’s. The genetic test for it is less than 20 years old. Marfan is a spectrum so you might have some symptoms and not others. Also, you can have a spontaneous mutation of Marfan’s so you have no other family members with the same physical problems. That’s what happened to me. Had all these seemingly unconnected problems that no one connected until my eye doctor who had another patient with Marfan asked me if I knew about it. Consider yourself lucky if you knew right away instead of sounding off from your high horse like a Becky. 🙄🥱
My man with the clickbait
Not click bait...he really is medically banned from the NBA ...or at least was last we heard and from the draft. ..
He should have sued the NBA.
Litigation is not always the answer.
It is in the interest of the player and the league to not have athletes dying on the court.
Imagine it the other way. NBA says cool... He plays a few years and dies or has a experience that nearly kills him at practice. Family Sue's the NBA . They knew the risk, and let him play anyway.
Can you brush your right eyebrow next time? It was bothering me throughout the whole video
