The NBA draft is just like any type of betting. The outcome depends on the human factor and luck - which makes the job of a general manager extremely hard at times. Even the most celebrated college players can turn into busts, and sometimes the rawest prospects develop into All-Stars and MVPs.

Well, one thing we need to remember is that foreign players normally have contracts with other leagues in other countries, and since those players don't make as much money as one would in NBA, they can't afford to buy out their own contracts, and NBA teams normally (or rarely) pay that buyout for them, so those NBA teams that picked foreign players, they are RISKING it big time. For instance, Ginobili entered the 1999 NBA draft, but at that time, his contract still had 3 years left, so the earliest time he could make it to NBA was in the year 2002. Can you imagine drafting a foreign player who may or may not be physically suited to play in the NBA and can't even make it to the NBA in a few years? That's almost like wasting a draft pick.

Larry Bird. Because he missed a year transferring from Indiana to Indiana State (it was more complicated than that), Bird was eligible for the draft after his junior season. (At Indiana State, where he averaged 30 pts but was still relatively unknown). Red Auerbach, with the 6th pick in the draft (and a dismal Celtics team), selected Bird even though Larry had already announced he was going back to the Sycamores for his senior season. Of course, he had a spectacular season, taking the team all the way to the NCAA finals, where Magic and Michigan State ended their undefeated season. Well, Auerbach was looking pretty smart, having already drafted Bird. But....Red had to sign Larry before the next NBA draft or Bird would go back into the draft and the Celtic's pick would have gone wasted. But Larry ended up signing the largest rookie contract in the history of SPORTS and the rest is both legend and history.
Red took this chance even though 5 other teams passed on Bird (for the risks described above). Larry Legend, indeed.

Unless you know some guys over 7ft tall that can drain 3's at near 40% while simultaneously being the most dominant scorer in the paint since Shaq while simultaneously going top 3 in rebounds while simultaneously throwing his name in the hat for DPOY ? lol of course you don't ! And don't get it twisted if he wasn't carrying the offense on his back he could *take* that DPOY award *every season* and Giannis is the only other player who could also make that claim (great on BOTH sides of the ball) on top of that he's been leading the league in double+triple teams 3 years straight ! As much as I rooted against Kobe he was quite frankly a legendary player by all accounts, why I don't think he belongs in this list though is because it wasn't that anybody whiffed and missed by not picking him, he was picked where he was because everyone was afraid to draft him due to him saying he would only play for the Lakers, more or less. It's also why I don't consider him being traded one of the worst trades of all time, the Hornets drafted him with the expectation to get a veteran player from the Lakers instead of letting the Lakers have a free and clear Kobe Bryant when they came up to pick their draft pick.

Calipari and the Nets were gonna take him at number 8 or 9, I forget exactly what number they had since he worked out for them and he's from the Philly area so he did also wanna play for the Knicks. I believe he was drafted exactly where he should've been. No one was talking about him he was a skinny high school kid and taking kids out of high school wasn't considered a good idea. A total of 5 players were picked out of high school between 62 and 96 that's a span of 34 years ! If Kevin Garnett hadn't been drafted a year earlier the Lakers probably could've grabbed Kobe in Rd 2. You gotta remember a *total of 5 players* had been drafted out of high school *before* Kobe was drafted. Damm near everybody believed drafting high schoolers was a huge mistake that would stunt a players development. Looking at the list though I'd have to disagree ! Moses Malone , Garnett, Kobe, Jermaine O'Neil, Tracy McGrady, Rashard Lewis, Eddy Curry, Amari Stoudemire, *LeBron James* , Dwight Howard etc a total of 44 and at least 7 are hall of fame worthy. I'm from Philly and am still here I actually remember talking to my friends parents about them drafting Allen Iverson and my buddies parents are *hard core* Philly fans so even his mom knew more about the local teams than I did. I remember her telling me about Kobe and Kobes dad and her looking at her husband and saying "Mike wouldn't it be nice if we got both of em?" lol one of them things that's stuck in your head for no apparent reason. I also remember a Kobe interview where he said growing up he dreamed of being drafted by the Sixers. You seem to know more about Kobe than I do as I was a Philly fan so I never paid much attention to Kobe as he wasn't "one of us" anymore ! But damn Kobe + A.I + Motumbo would've been something to see !

Kobe Bryant doesn't belong on this list.
He didn't "fall" to #13 with 12 teams passing on him. The Nets were desperate for a SG and Calipari really wanted to draft him earlier at #8 but he already let it be known that not only did he have no intentions of playing there, but also that he wanted to be a Laker from the get go. So they had to settle for the next best available SG Kerry Kittles.

He actually wanted to play for the Knicks also but they didn't have a high pick plus were not interested since they had 2 SG's already. Kobe actually would have played for the Nets because he worked out for them and liked Calipari and being from Pennsylvania, he'd be close to home but when Jerry West called him since they were the only team to show real interest he told Kobe to tell them he won't play for them so they went with Kittles instead. But even if he dropped to 8th that is a steal since he turned out to be an all time great.
