Met Jerry West 10 years ago when he was in vacation in Italy, asked him for a picture and told him that he was my father's favorite player. He brushed it off and said he wasn't even the best player in his team. Then he told me and my brother stories about Elgin Baylor and Wilt for 10 minutes.
I coudn't believe the humbleness and the kindness.
One of the very best players ever, and one of the very best GMs ever. And an even better human being.
do you recall any of the wilt and elgin stories he told?
Fr i want to hear those stories
Do you mind sharing those stories?
It's going to be a sad day for basketball when Jerry West passes away
@@your_fathers .
On Wilt: he said that in all his years he had never seen a better athlete than Wilt. He said that he is the strongest player in any era and that no one could match up with him physically. He said that only Bill Russell could get in Wilt's head to take him out of the game.
On Elgin Baylor: he said that Elgin was one of the purest scores ever. He compared him to George Gervin and KD, but that he played with intensity and fire like Kobe. He said that if you disrespected Elgin he would drop 50 on your head (his words).
He said that if you gave Elgin what these players have today (trainers, nutritionists, chefs and shot gurus) he would have scored at least 40 a game.
And then he just left, i had like 50 Kobe questions that i'll never get to ask.
But he is the coolest.
Man, I would love for Mr West to just go over what he loves about each team, heâs so knowledgeable about the game of basketball and the fact that everyone in the room calls him âMr Westâ is just a testament of how respected he is in the basketball world
Thereâs a reason heâs the logo. A timeless symbol for the NBA. He knows his stuff across all eras.

Jerry West is a treasure. he holds so much respect, you can tell by how quiet everybody becomes when he talks.
When nobody puts you in the Goat conversation but for the last 30 years or so you are the NBA logo?
And nobody came out to change it nor they would dare to change, u know you are that dude, the crazy thing is West himself has said he shouldn't be the logo, but that's how much he means to the sport.
agreed - you'd be a fool to disrespect a talented genius like him
Heâs seen the nba as a player, coach, gm, and an executive. He could probably give a perfect description of every player thatâs ever played.
Its funny how he clowns Adam, they must have a really good relationship
His starting 5 was the best because he picked Stockton and Chamberlain. Both statistical monsters. Looked up Magic v Stockton and similar stats except Stockton has 2-3 less TOs a game and creates 1-2 more TOs for his team. Statistically Stockton was better at both ends.
Jerry West almost won the contest just by himself. He didnât even need to consult stats or study hard for it, his sense for talent and team building is just amazing.
Or that he's literally personally seen all eras play. He knows who's best.
He would of won if everyone got one wildcard each so no advantage given as west would of picked the needed bench player. His starting 5 is ridiculous btw.
And thats even after originally wanting to pick all Lakers players, the kobe second overall is otherwise awful.
Heâs was an actual GM
@@Respectedevil1tf you smoking. Kobe was the best pick on the board. Jerry knew this. Which is why he took him .

Everything he touches turns to gold. Trace his career in the front office from Los Angeles, to Memphis, to the LA Clippers, to the Golden State Warriors. Aside from the Lakers, every team he went to struggled amidst mediocrity and worse. When he arrived they immediately turned themselves into teams that could go deep in the playoffs and /or contend and win championships. His eye for talent and team assembly is second to none. i keep repeating that part..đ€Ł
Then a few minutes later Chuck picking Dave Cowens out of nowhere haha
Barkleys face too lol. I don't think he likes to remember when he played on the Rockets with him.
@@asvpfern He picked him in the 2011 draft as well.
You can tell that Jerry loved Kobe. He knew the greatness the moment he saw him.
The irony that Jordan went third again. I love this segment though.
3rd time he went 3rd. In the other Ultimate Draft show he was also picked 3rd
@@calamorta and Allen Iverson went first because chuck didn't know what's actually going on the last time.
who would've thought Nique would be drafted first out of every great NBA player ever
I could listen to Jerry West all day. That man has great stories, and he is humble but you can tell he exudes excellence. Soak him up before he's gone...
Jerry West is the most accomplished basketball figure in NBA history. He was a Hall of Famer on all levels; As a player, as a coach and as a GM.
I know itâs all about the draft but seeing ernie johnson being such a cool and professional host being able to facilitate an event with so many big namesâŠnever fails to amaze meâŠđđ»đđ»
Agreed. He has a perfect feel for when to let people talk and when to speed things up. Ernie is a legend.
He really did one heck of a job
Ernie is the GOAT
I agree was thinking the same before it even started
The greatest sports Moderator and Basketball show host I've ever seen.
The fact that Mr. Jerry West chose Kobe Bryant first is awesome.
Mr. West has seen, played with/against or drafted most of these 75 players. And still chose Bean first. Ya love to see it. All the respect, Mr. Logo.
Jerry loved kobe like a son. It was heart breaking seeing him talk about kobe when he died.
@@jimai808 He talked about him? More like he choked and cried about him. He could barely say a word. To see someone as cool as Jerry be like that just tore your heart out of your chest.
He knew they had took the steal of the draft when they traded Divac for Kobe(13th pick)
@FBI they ignored you
@FBI obviously
Sue Bird is a much needed edition to the Inside the NBA crew. She could do break downs and show how a possession may have been different in the WNBA and why.
Who tf is sue bird
@@kNIGHTWINGKID01lmao did u watch the video
her team was stacked too, she was kind of robbed by the algorithm I think.
@@spanzotab exactly. no way sue's team is 8th. just no way
Sues great much better than Candace and has much better knowledge if the game
I love Jerry west so much. As a laker fan since I was 5 years old. What he did for us and continues to do is amazing â€ïž
This was an absolutely brilliant segment. It was so wonderful to see Jerry West there too, and so much talk about the older greats as well.
Perfect use of the top 75 occasion basically, and union with the old Open Court days.
@@dusk6159 I wish that they would bring back Open Court. I wish they would have done more back then with the older players. Many of them are gone now. It would have been wonderful to have had a record of Kobe and his stories and thoughts.
jerry is an old noob when he keeps mentioning d.green
Jerry: "I like players who can think"
Kenny: "Then why'd you pick Charles?"
âThis other gentlemen over there.â Jerry West still a savage
Denied the handshake a-la Zeke too
Dang why does he hate him I felt bad for that guy
@@manthemanmantheman6611 West respects players. You can have all the knowledge in the world, but experience is the most important.
Yea I'm wondering what's behind that as well..seemed to really dislike him
I think Jerry didn't like it when Lefkoe said Cousy was only there to get snacks for the rest of their team
Quavo literally picked my dream team. Steph, AI, Rodman, Giannis, Dr. J, and The Iceman at starting five!! It will be a dream come true to see my favourite players The Answer and the Chef in the same team. In my opinion, this team has one of the best offensive and defensive presence while having the potential culture that will lead to a dynasty. A combination of unselfish and competitive players. The amount of rebounds we will be getting because of Rodman and Westbrook is gonna be crazy. As the saying goes, the team that controls the rebounds, wins the game.
I wish they did a coaches draft, too. 8 of the best NBA coaches throughout history? That would be insane.
Jerry West made this segment! I'd love to see him more on TNT, he commands so much respect.
Also, it's a shame George Mikan came off the board so late!
Or no Tony Parker as a wild card. How tf is he not too 75 ?! đ
George Mikan was the first true superstar in the NBA. He also fundamentally changed the game with his play. His drills are still practiced everywhere to this day. The 50s/60s players really don't get the respect they deserved, they played when the rules for offensive players were very strict and you had to play smart to succeed.
@Tong Zou Yeah, that was ridiculous. I was constantly saying when are they going to pick Barry and Hondo? I was super surprised that Jerry West took Carmelo before either one of them, but I guess he knew people would overlook them late. Both Havlicek and Barry are in my top 25 of all time, btw (especially if you consider Barry's ABA career as well).
I don't understand why Jerry don't like that white boy from nba on tnt tuesday hahaha
@@PalmdalesAdonis Cause he's hella fake.
After that legendary all time nba draft 10ish years ago. Chuck drafted AI as number 1. Great to have it again!
I watched the first one like 3 times I love it
I was hoping he would just outta respect
I thought they would never bring this back... there is a god
Wow that was 10 years ago???
I would take AI number 1 over any of these guys playing today
I was only planning on watching 5 minutes of this but ended up watching the whole dang thing. Jerry West is a true gem!
When I was a teenager I used to watch Jerry west have awesome battles with John havlicek.. both legendary players very smart guys,. When havlicek was still on the board at the end of round eight I think west was surprised
All we needed was Kenny smith to pick him self as one of the wild cards . That wouldâve been the icing on the cake đđđ
And we would lol
After Chuck's move, I thought he was gonna go for it.
âI WANNA PLAY WITH MAGICđ«đ«â
That's Kenny smith in a nutshell. Just super annoying.
On the 60th version of this Kenny Smiths wife was the Vanna white of that show and MY GOD she is Gorgeous. Money must be nice.
âNext time you do this I wonât be here so make sure everyone gets one free pick.â - Jerry West đŻđđ„ș
That hurt man
83 year's old he need his own show or broadcast the guy is a legend
I canât believe he said that
When he said that
@@jamesleydorante7532 57:25
Chuck randomly screaming âdave cowens!!â Hahahaha
For those who want to skip ahead to when the fun officially starts, go to 4:39.
Jerry West is an incredible touch to this. He's so with it and so knowledgeable. And funny.
I really enjoyed how he showed his absolute contempt at that dude from D Wade's team
Jerry throwing unnecessary shade at Adam Lefkoe the entire show was hilarious đ
Big props to chuck when he corrected according to sources saying âYOUR number 1 pick,â no need to disrespect the other greats
Iâve watched this whole video through at least 5 times since it happened. Such a dope concept
I love Jerry west's polite response to getting drafted: "Thank you. Thank you."
Very humble guy, underrated. He'd be my fourth pick for a guard after MJ, Kobe, and magic because of his defense, scoring, leadership, shooting, and humility
He's an overlooked Big O/Stockton all-around menace of all-time.
His defense goes under the radar by definition.
@@dusk6159 seriously, the model of a shooting guard. Decent playmaker, badass clutch and leader, great defense, great scorer and shooter (perfect shooting form).
And if you pick Jerry West you will get home as a coach and GM for 30 years after he retires. So thatâs the perfect pick
@@camerondrain8166 true. Players back then were badass, bill Russell won a chip as a player and a coach at the same time. Players nowadays are wimpy and take things for granted (not to be cliche or old and annoying, I'm 15 not like 80 lol)
@@camerondrain8166 So the man played with Wilt and won a championship. And then signs Shaq and trades for Kobe in the same season and wins 4 more rings with the Lakers. A legend.
What Jerry West said at 57:26 sink in. Some people might not have heard that with all of the background chatter, but it rings true. One of the most iconic and deeply respected individuals in NBA history will probably not be around for the next ultimate draft. Mr. West is a legend among legends.
Heartbreaking to hear
Thought I was the only one. When the 100th comes around he wonât be there no more. Legendary
Sad but true, but his legacy will never die!
What did he say? Make sure everyone gets what?
He's one of the few basketball icons to witness all 75 years of the league.
I love that Sue shouted out the nuggets. Miss her on the management staff. Sheâs a legend.
