Born in Edinburgh’s Eastern General and living in the city until the age of eight and returning to live there from the age of 18, there’s no doubt Craig and Charlie Reid regard the capital as home.
The most poignant song from their new album ‘Angry Cyclist’, Streets of Edinburgh is a tribute to the city. It sings from the heart about what the capital and the people they have known over the years, mean to them.
“Folk have been asking about that song - were you waiting to write it?” said Craig, who didn’t want it to be sentimental. “It wasn’t like that at all. Sometimes when you get a completed tune it takes weeks and weeks and weeks to get the lyrics. This time I got the tune, then the lyrics just kind of fell out. It didn’t take very long. I hadn’t been thinking about the city or anything like that. I just kind of wrote about my feelings towards it and experiences.”
The accompanying video was written and directed by Rianne White who, as well as directing the band’s recent Angry Cyclist video, is renowned for her work with the likes of Young Fathers (‘Lord’ video). It acts as a sequel to the Angry Cyclist video, offering a new visual perspective of humanity. Contrasting from the high intensity movement and environment, Rianne wanted to focus on the freedom of unplugging and looking up and outward. It includes a subtle continuity of established faces found in Angry Cyclist within the Streets of Edinburgh. Conceptually the video explores experiencing the space and rhythm laced around the seven hills that Edinburgh sits on. Working with each hill as a centre point, the video navigates neighbourhoods influenced by reflection and distinctive architecture. In short, it’s a love letter to Edinburgh.
********************************************************************* “with its Everly’s-style harmonies, heart tugging epic Streets of Edinburgh is a thoroughfare classic to rival those of Messrs Rafferty and McTell.” MOJO
“a gorgeously eloquent paean to their birthplace (Depending on your viewpoint this place is blessed or cursed), as immediate and affecting as Letter From America or Sunshine On Leith.” RECORD COLLECTOR
“Streets of Edinburgh is as good a song as you’ll ever hear about the nostalgic resonance of a hometown.” THE TELEGRAPH
“Streets of Edinburgh is a beautifully heartfelt homage to their home town.” THE TIMES “A touching, grandiose, string heavy paean to their home town.“ CLASSIC POP
“there is definitely no need to second guess Streets of Edinburgh, an emotional tribute to the Scottish capital, powerful in its simplicity.” THE SCOTSMAN
“Streets of Edinburgh is a paean to their home city as beautiful as Sunshine On Leith itself.” THE YORK PRESS
“Streets of Edinburgh, is a sentimental look at the city The Proclaimers call home. The living and the ghosts that inhabit the memories of the writers give meaning to the stones and concrete. “An air of sordid passion, a look of dirty grace. But not right in your face. It’s not that kind of place” might not be Visit Scotland’s preferred description of the country’s capital city, but the song is a firm candidate for the duo’s next anthemic tune.” LOUDER THAN WAR
“With lungs as full and as open as ever on ‘Streets of Edinburgh’, the Reid’s’ emotionally charged outlook is apparent as they locate themselves and their souls in a place and time.” GIGSLUTZ
“a new Scots anthem” DAILY RECORD

I was a bus driver in Edinburgh from the 90s until 2023 this song really resonates with me,ive seen so many changes in Edinburgh not all for the better (Edinburgh council get a grip next to no toilets in the capital)and long story short i pick up one of the proclaimers on the number 10, always very polite happy to talk to folk on the bus about the amazing song catalogue they have especially during the festival so patient with people they are what i would call true gentleman artists.

My mum is from Edinburgh. I went over when I was 7 to stay with my grandparents for a few months. That was before it was "cool" to be Scottish (pre Braveheart) and mum had my first kilt made for me at 5 yrs old. My friends hadn't even heard of Scotland! I went back to visit relos, after my grandparents passed, when I was 17. I haven't been since the '90's. I grew up in NYC but my heart is in Edinburgh. I'm now a mum and I can't wait to show my daughter her roots! This song is everything.

I'd had a superb time, then came up the ramp on a beautiful sunny morning and looked around at Princes Street Gardens, the castle, the old town, North Bridge... I appreciated just how lucky I was to live just 2 miles away from this, the most beautiful city in the world.

The Proclaimers have a way of evoking emotion like no one else. I can have chills up my spine listening to a song about a city I’ve never been to. How is that possible? I guess they make us feel the emotion as part of a collective consciousness, together as one world.

  • @hwyisalive
    @hwyisalive Před 3 lety +144

Sadly, The Proclaimers are, here in the United States, known for "I'm Gonna Be (500 Miles)" because it was included in the film "Benny and June" and for "I'm on My Way" being used in "Shrek". The depth, beauty and quality of their complete discography is positively stunning. Even as a fan since "Sunshine on Leith" (somehow I initially missed the first album) I have probably underrated them. "The Streets of Edinburgh" is so shockingly gorgeous that it's almost difficult to process. In this song, they do something taught by Japanese monks from hundreds of years ago. The monks taught that we all wear three masks. The first mask we show the world easily. It's essentially fraud, but it's what we create and show to survive or because we think we must show that face in order to create or maintain the life we want. The second mask we show those close to us. To our parents, our children and close friends. It's closer to the real us, but still keeps some of us private from those people. The third mask is who we really are. In this song we are hearing them sing of Edinburgh while wearing their third mask. So not only is the song sublimely written, shimmeringly produced and positively spine tingling to listen to, but it is their absolute 100% complete total transparent unfiltered truth. I am almost incomprehensibly moved by this song and so much of their work. I think we cry when we hear this song and others by The Proclaimers not only because it is such a gorgeous song, but because it is also their "Beautiful Truth" In most of the world, and perhaps especially here in the United States, we so very, very seldom see or hear that from anyone. So the tears we cry when listening to "The Streets of Edinburgh" are tears of joy because they represent the hope that everyone in the world should, can and will, eventually, at long last, proclaim their real selves and their real truth to one another.

    Along these broken pavements
I let my mind run free
    The past and the present
Seem just the same to me
The people I have loved most
    Among these stones did dwell
    And in the plainest language
    Their stories they did tell
    They pass, they pass
    They pass, they pass
    The streets of Edinburgh
Hold half the world for me
    In scores, in droves
    The living and the ghosts
    The streets of Edinburgh
    Mean most to me
    Depending on your viewpoint
This place is blessed or cursed
And in the years I've lived here
I've seen the best and worst
    An air of sordid passion
    A look of dirty grace
But not right in your face
It's not that kind of place
    They pass, they pass
    They pass, they pass
    The streets of Edinburgh
Hold half the world for me
    In scores, in droves
    The living and the ghosts
    The streets of Edinburgh
    Mean most to me
    Down greasy potholed roadways
    I watch the traffic crawl
But for the cars and buses
I give no thought at all
    I think about the future
    I wonder at her health
    How with this human wealth
    She does renew herself
    They pass, they pass
    They pass, they pass
    The streets of Edinburgh
Hold half the world for me
    In scores, in droves
    The living and the ghosts
    The streets of Edinburgh
    Mean most to me

To add to what Danielsauntiejo has already said about this superb city, I am a very very English Englishman and very proud of our capital London as nothing beats coming over one of her many bridges at dawn with a mist hanging on the majestic river Thames whilst snaking its way through some of the most beautiful sights at that time of the day, But then there is Edinburgh with its amazing Gothic look and a real feel of magic whenever you go there which has never left me or felt any less than the very first time I went there to watch a Scotland v England Rugby match at Murryfield right back in the early eighties, that turned my opinion that Twickenham was the best ground to watch the best Rugby to be played, as that was the start of my love affair with the fabulous City of Edinburgh its super lovely people and one of the warmest welcomes you will get anywhere in the world. So to The Proclaimers , well done fella's you have summed up your super, super capital so well in this song, I just love it thank you both very much. Greg

Nostalgia - it's delicate, but potent.
In Greek, "nostalgia" literally means "the pain from an old wound."
It's a twinge in your heart far more powerful than memory alone.

My grandparents came to America from Scotland. My family mostly lived in dunoon and Glasgow. I grew up hearing so many wonderful stories about it and when I turned 18, I had saved up enough money to go for the first time for a week. I went through Edinburgh, dunoon, Glasgow and mallaig. I hope I can save enough money to go back. All this to say, thanks proclaimers. Whenever I feel homesick for Scotland, I listen to you guys. Even watching a hibs game and hearing them sing sunshine on Leith makes me smile. Thanks

Thank you for this song! From the time this Yank first set foot in Edinburgh in 1977 to present day, it is the one place in the world that truly feels like "home" to me. I have never been able to explain the pull it has, but between the music, lyrics and visuals, this video expresses how I feel. Absolutely beautiful!

Gail Kreyns Your roots must be connected there. I truly believe that. I got that feeling the first time I went to Ireland. Now I feel it in many places... Scotland, Northumberland, Norway, Finland, Sweden, Denmark and Russia. All of which are in my DNA. It’s as if the blood knows where it’s from.

Siobhan28483, my maternal grandfather's grandparents were from Glasgow & Aberdeen, so yes, I do have DNA roots in Scotland, but as far as I've been able to research not finding any Edinburgh connection yet. I've been all over Scotland on visits through the years, and feel a connection to many areas, but nowhere is the pull and feeling of "home" as strong as it is in Edinburgh, so who knows!

Edinburgh is stunning due in no small part to the Castle in the centre Glasgow has some fine Edwardian buildings and of course the people make a place what it is too. The Proclaimers for all I don't agree with their political stance always seem to capture from the heart what most of us feel about our home towns. Pity they weren't from Glasgow!!!!
