This is a lo-fi video production of the song I Wish I Was In Glasgow. This one was done on a slow Sunday because I kept thinking of and missing Glasgow that weekend. Sometimes I miss it badly.
It’s a tough city with tough people and yet, paradoxically, the kindest place whose folk have the biggest, most generous hearts and sense of community. The chorus says it all, if you’ve ever really lived there: it gives you more than it ever takes away and prepares you for life. It did that for me.
My late father James Andrew Wilson was born in Glasgow 1.2.1901 and sadly passed away in South Africa in 1957. Although I was born in South Africa my heart is in Glasgow and at age 71 my wish is to visit Glasgow before I close my eyes. RIP daddy, miss you.
Sad story I hope you get to visit Glasgow you'll love it I live 20 miles from it was born and bred there myself Glasgow will welcome you I do hope your doing well and hope you get to cone to Glasgow you won't regret it it's beautiful
I love this song. Gives me shivers and a tear rolls down my cheek. Billy wrote comedy songs, but some ballads he wrote are so beautiful. He has a beautiful voice and was a good musician. He is still great on the banjo...this song is the best.
My grandmother was born and raised in Glasgow 30/08/1927 but as an adult decided to move away from the area and over to the east coast and always had family there but her heart was always with Glasgow. She sadly passed away on 17/08/2022 age 94, a long happy life, I chose this wee tune for her funeral and will always from now till I pass listen to it and smile a probably a wee tear 😊😪 Rest in peace Nana x
I don't come from Glasgow but love the song. I think anyone who comes from big northern town that has largely been re landscaped as so many have will feel a resonance with the song. In Billy's own words it's not the environment he misses so much, it is his youth that he misses. Don't we all.
Born and breed in Glasgow, and was once very proud of being a Glaswegian...the people are 10/10 for friendliness, kindness & humour.....the people in our council who have made the city’s decision for the last 50 years need Shot.. sad but true ☹️☹️☹️☹️
@@markcf83 can I please tell you… I read your comment and the first thing I thought about was the demonisation of the working classes in Glasgow, Manchester, Liverpool (in fact the whole North) This makes me so sad my friend
I wish he’d included a line in the song it preparing for a life on the sea though too. She’s gateway to the Isles, Mulls to St Kilda you’d obviously be aware of especially as a MacDonald. Its a lovely song regardless, just Glasgow’s ne the entire Clyde corridor past Greenock and Lanarkshire relationship to the sea is even greater, even if implied figuratively. Every city has roads but only Glasgow has the Clyde. But its his song from the heart. May be I should make one to complement it. Buaidh na Bas.
I love this song...its so touching....Billy doesnt think he was much of a musician or singer. His voice is haunting in this song...he wrote some great songs. He plays banjo better than so many others who think they are the great ones. A very talented, caring, kind man is Sir William. He's the funniest, most alive man I've ever seen. Fond memories of the few times I've been in Glasgow. Sweet wee song. All the best to all in Glasgow from Tipperary, be you Celtic or Rangers! Good folks in that town, if you ain't been, get yer arse there. Good man Billy.

My mother was born and raised in Glasgow and she might have married a kiwi, and wound up in New Zealand, but she never gave up her country she kept her citizenship and told her children all the stories about her city Glasgow. Years later she took my twin and I back to her Glasgow, but it had changed beyond recognition, it wasn't the place she had left all those years ago and she cried for leaving the city of her birth and went back to New Zealand. But inspite of it all she held fast to her citizenship and never gave it up. Stubborn people those Scots but history tells us they've been through a lot, and they never stop loving the land of their birth.
my dad and grandfather left, one went to england one to the usa, but both remained scots to the day they died, they both went through a lot, that's what makes the scots a hard and fare people, jim little
Aye. 33 years here. Different times back then. I came away on an off-chance and found opportunities I could never have found back home. Then you settle in, life is good, and when you go back people treat you a bit like The Man Who Fell to Earth, and you realise you don't belong anywhere any more. But your heart still belongs tae yer ain folk, and that's forever.

I love this song. I remember the old building my Aunt, Uncle and Cousins lived in, in Glasgow. It may have been a run down building, but my Aunt kept the place spotless. The toilet was shared, and was down an old warn out staircase, which i fell down. Great memories. My Uncle Johnny used to play the accordian, but could no longer do so, due to black lung, from working in the coal mines. Miss them days.
Old memories Teresa. My granny lived in a condemned single end and the shared outside loo was down half a flight on the half landing. It was scary in the small hours of the marning in winter.

I'm sure this song would have an even greater poignancy to me were I actually from Scotland (I'm from the Oakland area in America) but I feel like these themes really transcend borders. There's a very universal feeling of "yeah, this town is a mean piece of shit place, but it's MY mean piece of shit place, and I wouldn't rather be from anywhere else". There will always be parts you don't like (like those special places to you getting torn down, something I'm very familiar with), but there's also the immense blessings to be alive and to be around those you come to know and love. Writing this from college, first long time away from home, and I hope everyone here feels like home is never too far away, at least in spirit.

Oh I wish I was in Glasgow With some good old friends of mine, Some good old rough companions And some good old smooth red wine. We could talk about the old days And the old town's sad decline And drink to the boys on the road. Oh I was born in Glasgow Near the center of the town. I would take you there and show you But they've torn the building down, And when I think about it It always makes me frown They bulldozed it all to make a road. And that great old place I miss so much Has seen much better days, And still we talk about it As we go our separate ways. Oh but Glasgow gave me more Than it ever took away And prepared me for life on the road. And that great old place I miss so much Has seen much better days, And still we talk about it As we go our separate ways. Oh but Glasgow gave me more Than it ever took away And prepared me for life on the road. My granny was a cleaner, My grandad drove a tram, My father an engineer, Made me all I am. They have seen the city come and go, Still they give a damn. There's so much to learn along the road. And Glasgow gave me more Than it ever took away And prepared me for life on the road
I was born and raised in castlemilk 1956 in my parents bedroom in our wee council flat in croftfoot rd. It was a tough place but had the kindest people, I worked in maryhill as a apprentice motorcycle mechanic and it was not far from Billy's favourite pub the saree heid. I will miss Billy a lot he was part of my life growing up in Glasgow. R.I.P Billy
Although I'm not from Glasgow, but Edinburgh. Cant help having similar feelings, Edinburgh gave me so much back in the 60' 70's and to all the friends once had who have all gone there separate ways. Miss those days

Thanks so much for posting this gorgeous song, which I never heard until now. I burst into tears from almost the first note. While I've never been to Glesga (something that must be remedied), I live in Buffalo, NY. Buffalo suffered terribly from deindustrialization in the 1970s and 1980s, and hasn't completely recovered. Nor will it ... but this town has such heart and I love it so much. Billy's love song to Glasgow really touched me, as it describes Buffalo, too. Warmest regards to all of you wonderful Glaswegians.
I was born and raised just outside Glasgow. Live an hour or so from Buffalo now. Youreright there are many similarities. I hope you manage a wee visit to Glasgow ay some point Elizabeth.
I was born in Glasgow, lived in there for 30 years, then I moved to Derby, I'm now 45, man I miss Glasgow... I think it left a Glasgow shaped hole in my soul....
This song reminds of my Uncle Johnny. He was such a beautiful soul. He played the accordion. He worked the coal mines in Glasgow. He died fairly young from black lung. This song is for you.
I get the bus to Partick, then the subway to St. Enoch`s every day, i missed the place so much when i moved to the Borders that i rarely miss going there. Glasgow has changed beyond all recognition since the 70`s and 80`s BUT, the people haven`t. We still have that wee sarcastic sense of humour and great banter where ever you are in the city.
I WAS BORN IN ROTTEN ROW MATERNITY IN GLASGOW., IVE LIVED IN ROYSTON, GARTHAMLOCK, DENNISTOUN AND BISHOPBRIGGS ALL IN GLASGOW ... MY FAMILY ALL STILL LIVE THERE......AND I MISS THEM SO MUCH, THIS SONG SUMS IT UP SO WELL, THANK YOU BILLY FOR THIS. AND THANK YOU FOR SHARING PAUL DIVERS...THE TEARS ARE BLUNNING ME!!!!!!
I thought the same thing when he sings "born near the centre" -- I'm also a Rottenrow baby, and that's not near the centre, it IS the centre. Six feet from Provand's Lordship and ten feet from the Cathedral. The name means "La route du Roi" or King's Way. The hospital is gone now, of course. Yeah and me too, I blur my eyes wi greetin.
Saltcoats was our whole family's holidày the fair fortnight was longed for all year round, my uncle even drove from Birmingham with my aunty añd 3 cousins and sometimes his mother in law , my mum and her 4 sisters would be sent to the hairdresser and uncle john took all the kids for a fish tea then aunty babysat all of us and the sisters got glamed up and hàd a night out with their big brother . . Saltcoats was a great place then I have so many photos of all of us there
Just got my 10 month old son to sleep singing this. I genuinely think the Glasgow accent (and other Scots accents but ours most of all 😘) makes really beautiful music
Glesga is so special Like Dorothy in Oz, magical place with magical people. You can be dead and buried and go to Heaven but you would always want to go back in time to be growing up in Glesga. There is no better place anywhere so if you missed it I feel sorry because you would have loved it. I belong tae Glesga.
I always loved Billy Connolly. He really is the best comedian ever. A Glaswegian born & raised, like myself. Me, old Gorbals, then Pollok. ("REAL" Glaswegians: WORKING 💪 CLASS.)

And some good old smooth red wine.
We could talk about the old days
And the old town's sad decline
And drink to the boys on the road.
Oh I was born in Glasgow
Near the center of the town.
I would take you there and show you
But they've torn the building down,
And when I think about it
It always makes me frown
They bulldozed it all to make a road.
And that great old place I miss so much
Has seen much better days,
And still we talk about it
As we go our separate ways.
Oh but Glasgow gave me more
Than it ever took away
And prepared me for life on the road.
And that great old place I miss so much
Has seen much better days,
And still we talk about it
As we go our separate ways.
Oh but Glasgow gave me more
Than it ever took away
And prepared me for life on the road.
My granny was a cleaner,
My grandad drove a tram,
My father an engineer,
Made me all I am.
They have seen the city come and go,
Still they give a damn.
There's so much to learn along the road.
And Glasgow gave me more
Than it ever took away
And prepared me for life on the road
What a great man, what a great song, which may resonate with anyone of us, who live in a great City. Just lovely!
Glasgow people are great, the friendliest people alive.
This song makes me so happy and sad at the same time wonderful song
Just an absolutely beautiful song, makes you proud to be Scottish 👏🏻
I was born and raised in castlemilk 1956 in my parents bedroom in our wee council flat in croftfoot rd. It was a tough place but had the kindest people, I worked in maryhill as a apprentice motorcycle mechanic and it was not far from Billy's favourite pub the saree heid. I will miss Billy a lot he was part of my life growing up in Glasgow. R.I.P Billy
Yes, the kindest people who had close to nothing.
God Bless Mr Billy Connolly may he have many, many long and happy years
Although I'm not from Glasgow, but Edinburgh. Cant help having similar feelings, Edinburgh gave me so much back in the 60' 70's and to all the friends once had who have all gone there separate ways. Miss those days
Great comment.
At 67 and looking back we were poor but life was so so much better than this madness we live in today
Indeed. At least we have some values.
@@DavidAKZ lol have or had? Value,s have vanished and life is selfish and plastic. Once our generation goes it is going to be horrific but hey ho . I have my faith to cling to
@arfermo853 It always is a young person's world. I'm 63 and all I can do is try to reflect the values I was given. Kindness, generosity understanding. Doesn't always work out of course but that is not the point. Thanks for replying.
@@DavidAKZ no probs im 69 and i was dragged up not brought up but i still had certain rules of respect but today its fashionable to be as disgusting as you can be,i live in Bristol England and we have gone from a very rare murder to about eight in the last two months and now it seems to be a challenge to be one of the boys
My Scotland i love and hold dearly to my heart. ❤
My lovely mum Sadie was born and raised in Glasgow. Some of my best memories are of Glasgow when we would visit my grandmother. The Glasgow folk are the most honest and friendly folk I have met in my life. Here's to a City with so much spirit and character. Thank you Billy for your song. I know my mum if she were alive today would have loved this song along with the pictures.
glasgow loves billy with all her heart
Even though I'm from Australia, this song give me a pang of home sickness in my heart for a place I've never been to before. What a beautiful song.
I lived in Australia and missed my home glasgow, but now I miss Australia 😔 🏴 🇦🇺
@@scottmiddleton4149 it's funny how that works aye. I wish I could visit Glasgow, I would love the weather and especially the history and scenery. Hope I go soon but things are so uncertain right now. How long were you in Aus for?
@@willkirkoff1333 just over a year due to COVID, but recently spoke to a visa company and plan to immigrate there in next 5 years 👍 let’s swap haha
@@scottmiddleton4149 haha would love that trade off 😂That's awesome man! By then I hope everything returns back to normal and when you do make the move you have a splendid time in our country.
@@willkirkoff1333 thanks mate. All the best 👍
Native Glasgow man living in Paisley. Missing my City even though I'm only down Paisley Road West.
Save up and make the trip back wan day man.
Alan Hope Don’t need to save I’ll just sell my house one day and be back.
50 Ibrox Street, the greatest start embdy could have hud as a wee boy, made me the auld man i am today!
I'm a Fifer living on the West Coast and I love it.
The old Glasgow was the best its very sad to see the old shops and most tenements are all gone
..Glasgow gave me more than it ever took away, and prepared me for life on the road..
Glasgow smiles better.....a helluva town, heart and soul above so many. Billy nails it.
I was born in Greenock but I love Glasgow just as much
My great grandfather was a horse drawn tram driver many years ago
Just heard this for the first time and it's beautiful. Absolutely love Glasgow, like my second home. As people we truly are products of our environments and the places where we're from shape us hugely.
Love the big yin mans a legend x
Sir Billy done an absolute cracking job with this song has you almost in tears listening to it and what a brilliant guy to play it and sing it than glasgows favourite Sir Billy Connelly an absolute gentleman from Glasgow we all love Billy Connelly he's brilliant
Something you must do, Fantastic place to live and just Graced in history.
The song would bring a tear to a glass eye Elizabeth.
Spent a lot of time in both places, you are right they very similar. Very good people from both places.
I was born and raised just outside Glasgow. Live an hour or so from Buffalo now. Youreright there are many similarities. I hope you manage a wee visit to Glasgow ay some point Elizabeth.
Nice one Rossco.
I was born in Glasgow, lived in there for 30 years, then I moved to Derby, I'm now 45, man I miss Glasgow...
I think it left a Glasgow shaped hole in my soul....
You'll always bee fae Glesga my boi 😏
Cheers big man :)
What a beautiful song we had this at my grandads funeral as one of his 3 songs he was a Baker from Glasgow love this song
For my beloved mother I lost her in February to dementia she was. A Glasgow girl 😢
God bless her.And you

Every time I hear this, I’m in tears. It hits every nerve, point, etc. Love you Billy... x
Me too.😪
This song reminds of my Uncle Johnny.
Haunting. You always got, indeed still do get, a laugh in Glasgow.
I know Andrew. It' gets me too
I thought the same thing when he sings "born near the centre" -- I'm also a Rottenrow baby, and that's not near the centre, it IS the centre. Six feet from Provand's Lordship and ten feet from the Cathedral. The name means "La route du Roi" or King's Way. The hospital is gone now, of course. Yeah and me too, I blur my eyes wi greetin.
Born in coat bridge Is that close enough
Nah man, get back tae Lanarkshire.
Alan Hope long way to go back from the Manitoba border
Saltcoats was our whole family's holidày the fair fortnight was longed for all year round, my uncle even drove from Birmingham with my aunty añd 3 cousins and sometimes his mother in law , my mum and her 4 sisters would be sent to the hairdresser and uncle john took all the kids for a fish tea then aunty babysat all of us and the sisters got glamed up and hàd a night out with their big brother . . Saltcoats was a great place then I have so many photos of all of us there
Beautiful. I sing it to my son every night at bedtime
Just got my 10 month old son to sleep singing this. I genuinely think the Glasgow accent (and other Scots accents but ours most of all 😘) makes really beautiful music
There's something about this song that nails it,...along with B.C, singing it, rough, ready, and Wonderful ….
Glesga is so special
Like Dorothy in Oz, magical place with magical people.
You can be dead and buried and go to Heaven but you would always want to go back in time to be growing up in Glesga.
There is no better place anywhere so if you missed it I feel sorry because you would have loved it.
I belong tae Glesga.
Brings tears to anyones eyes who had brilliant parents, they will forever be in our hearts.
Burst into tears when I saw the tram with Maryhill on it. Love you Billy for bringing out the best of human emotions!
I wish i was back in Glasgow 😞
Conor McGuire Aye, me an aw pal.
I agree with you nothing better than going home.
I’m in tears again. Such a moving track. Means so much in so many different ways, to so ,so , many people. Love you billy. X
Love the old photos of Glasgow and the song brings a tear to the eye.
I was missing Glasgow when I made this slide show Jazz Man. I wanted to keep it as simple as possible and leave gaps between the photos.
special and unique city, No doubt about it
abdiqani farah ❤️❤️
I was born and raised in Glasgow. Since then I have lived in many countries but Glasgow will always be in my heart.❤
I always loved Billy Connolly. He really is the best comedian ever. A Glaswegian born & raised, like myself. Me, old Gorbals, then Pollok. ("REAL" Glaswegians: WORKING 💪 CLASS.)
Gets me right here...
I miss ma Brigton.
Made me whit a um - so far away. .
I'm a Stevenston man n I love Glasgow, a million times better than London, Glasgow people are 100% n Billy likes Stevenston if you listen Saltcoats at the fare he's getting the next train intae Stevenston lol
This song should get played when billy is no longer with us at his funeral
ill keep your suggestion in mind, he and i havent really had a chance to discuss it, its hard for him & i to even bring it up. lately we just focus on our marriage. and never take it for granted . always saying i love you to each other daily.
Love and miss you daddyo ❤❤
Seemingly light and simply put, but oh so profoundly emotional. I could listen to it over and over.
I agree Margaret.
Love this song, have always loved Billy x
