- As evening fell, and with a raging appetite, I headed out to catch a tuk tuk towards Abdul Hameed Street which I'd heard had some of the best street food in Colombo, Sri Lanka.
Having avoided being ripped off by the local rickshaw wala, my Uber driver delivered me to my destination where I dived straight in to sampling some of the street food at the night market.
I began with chicken korma and biryani rice, which was nothing like the curry I had eaten back in the UK. This was spicy, rich, and not the creamy yellow sauce that is usually the go-to for those afraid of a little chilli.

@@InvestedAdventurethe bamboo keeps the flavours soaked into the rice while it cooks on the heat. You should try banana leaf wrapped dishes in Sri Lanka too, along with kothu roti, that is Sri Lanka’s special

Oh for sure! Some of the best food in Asia. Simple, yet reliable. British food just doesn’t compare - then again, we have some of the best ethnic eateries given migration

Hi Manisha, I discussed this a bit in my first video from Colombo when I had just left India, but for me, I think that;
Sri Lanka is cleaner, and more beautiful, without the hassles of India.
It’s still quite polluted in parts but nowhere near as bad. The trains are easy, cheap and reliable, with some incredible views.
WiFi and rickshaw drivers are the only real hassle, and both were worse than in India

When I was growing up in the 60's we all ( the entire population)received free food. I went to Sri Lanka in 2019 and the medical care was free of charge. Now, it is not.
Tourism would be very risky
I didn’t feel it was risky to be there as a tourist. Far from it. Though I expect that like many countries, things have changed over the decades as you have observed. Kindness still exists though! I had a great time

I try to dive into the local way of doing things-it’s part of the fun and helps me connect with the place. I always keep an eye on staying healthy, though. Appreciate you looking out!
