$20 CHALLENGE in Sri Lanka's Fake Market (Colombo) 🇱🇰

- In need of a makeover, I headed to Colombo's famous Pettah Market in search of the essentials for the modern day man about Sri Lanka. Whilst I was yet to understand the exchange rate, my time in India had prepared me for battle in negotiating with the many street sellers that awaited me.
My $20 challenge began with a 1-2 combo in buying a Louis Vuitton wallet and shades fit for Top G himself. Having haggled around 30% off the initial asking price, I was not only looking hella fresh, but also feeling smug with my fake market bargain.
As I continued through the market I discovered an Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Chronograph wrist watch, in steel, and with the much sought after blue dial, for a mere $100... how could it be, I wonder? Unfortunately I didn't have enough cash on me to take advantage of this incredible $30,000 sale, but I did manage to bag myself a Sri Lanka cricket jersey for a great price in consolation.
As I searched for hydration in the form of a fresh coconut, I bumped into a body-popping pensioner who provided me with a live performance resembling that of Run DMC in their prime. When I got to the coconut seller, it seemed that they were both as high as a kite, which provided for an entertaining drink on the stoop.
After a few more encounters with the friendly locals in Pettah Market, I found a shoe cleaner who proceeded to beat my sneakers to within an inch of their life, "cleaning" them with an environmentally conscious "water free" method... which left a lot to be desired.
Nonetheless, I was back on the move, looking fresh as I headed to the next street in search of a beard trim. A barber by the name of Charlie did a great job for me, and included one of the best head massages that I have had anywhere on my travels (arguably topping even the mighty Indian head massage).
After a successful shopping spree, I headed over the road to wrap up with some of Colombo's best Sri Lankan food at the Ruhunu Food Centre. I tried the legendary Sri Lankan Kottu Roti, and a bunch of desserts that were truly top notch.

That shoe cleaner here was not actually a shoe cleaner. He was just looking after the place until the actual shoe cleaner who went for lunch comes back. He was doing you just a favour by wiping off the dust. He asked others to tell you this in English, but no one did.
Hahaha that’s amazing! And explains it all - I wondered why he was beating them so intently. Did he say that explicitly in the audio?
Also, he asked others to tell if you bring shoes the next day he will take them home wash and bring them back in the next day. Enjoy your staying
1400 rupees for Cricket shirt is worth for the price, nice guy too. Normally they start with 3000 - 2500 rupees even for locals.
He seemed like a good lad, and I was happy to buy from him. I wore the shirt yesterday!

What I gathered shoue cleaner has gone out for lunch. And old man is looking after the place until he comes . You hardly find shoue cleaner s in Sri Lanka. But there are rd side cobblers. Shoue cleaning by road side been ended with the colonial era. 😂.
Get your shirt button fixed ask for a tailor shop .you will find plenty everywhere.

Totally! Though it’s not without its scammers (and nightmare rickshaw drivers, as you will see), it’s a MUCH better environment. I honestly dont see why people put up with the BS of India if they are otherwise looking to stay in the south, when Sri Lanka is an hour away

ya kottu is a really one of those foods that invoke a unique craving in u, say like fried chicken, or biryani or spag bol does...a spicelovers heaven. grew up in sri lanka, in new zealand now..not that easy to find here , and its quite the pain to make too. they would have given u a curry gravy too to go with it if u asked..

the orange coconuts are called king coconuts and only found in SL i think and they taste sweeter. The green ones are ones you can find anywhere else in the world with the bland taste

They sell it in corner shops, news stands, and at most food stalls/kiosks in markets and stations.
