- The sport of bargaining makes for some fun banter, and in markets with no fixed prices it's a must if you want to pay a fair price for the goods that you buy.
Some may ask why it's worth my time haggling for the difference between a few pennies on a pair of knockoff Puma socks. Well anything is worth your time if you enjoy doing it.
I found that all the best deals in Sri Lanka were in Colombo in and around the Pettah area. In the largest market in Kandy the sellers were pitching their prices very high and weren't prepared to negotiate much.
In Kandy they were trying to sell fake Sri Lanka cricket jerseys for 1,800 rupees when the original one in the department stores costs the same. The same jerseys were on sale in Pettah for a starting price of 750 and could definitely be negotiated down from there.

I think that's because Dale enjoys bargaining and most of us do not. Besides, If I try something like this, most vendors would retaliate and insult. But seems they are not unhappy when a sudda bargains.

Thunderskaaa Harald is spending all his CZcams money for poor people . He is bargaining for fun but he will give the 1st asked price + some tips too. I always watch Haral’s videos + all advertisements which Google Adsense adding to the videos so he can get some money.
Not a good match for Dale. Harald is such a whining bitch, always complaining about locals and he seems to have a big ego about himself just because he's from Norway. He might have expected something different about sri lankan girls too (this is not phillipine). And he always try to be bossy around locals. I mean he doesn't do anything bad but if you look closely, you'll see his bad mindset about sri lanka as a developing country. I hate that guy.

There are many Indians.Sri Lankans born in western countries and are rich, they dont have to pay "foreigner tax". Many Indians and Sri Lankans have more money than Dale, they dont have to pay rich tax. Only white man expected to pay "foreigner tax". Its wrong on many levels, and it encourages scamming in general towards even the locals. It encourages people to discriminate for other reasons too.

Yeah I guessed that's what they do. There was nothing I could buy in Kandy because every shop was selling for double the price that I knew from Pettah.

Good bargaining. You got better prices than locals. One thing to remember that these street vendors don't make big money , they just make barely enough to feed their families. We step into a big brand store and are prepared to pay big premium handing them a huge profit. Not all street vendors quote higher prices for the tourists. But starting the bargaining at 50% of the asking price is really something that I can't do. Good bargaining but remember that these guys makes barely enough money for the day.

Dale Philip most of their mindset is, ah a foreigner let’s rip off his wallet because he’ll think this price is fair. Then they tend to go overboard and quote a crazy amount. 😂 I’m not saying that all people think like this, there’s a handful that actually does what is right as well.

It's the same I think in all SEA you're expected to bargain, if you don't bargain you're not respected you're just a sucker. A lot of those knock offs they get really cheap less than 400LKR.
I always try and get things for half the price they tell me and I'll come up a little if it's something I really want. That's a good rule of thumb and like you did don't be afraid to walk away. Good chance you'll get it for half price or at the lowest price they can give you from some one else. It's all part of the fun of shopping at the markets.

@Dale Comparatively you got very good prices (I'm not sure about the quality), In Pettah .most customers are locals. Therefore profit margin is less. Thats why prices didn't change that much after bargaining.
And in Kandy it looks like they probably just buy from Pettah and try to sell at high profit to tourists in Kandy.

While I don't really mind people selling knock-off products, it's pretty irritating to see people talk about stealing the camera or speaking rudely simply because you don't understand the language. They get rude the second they realize you can't be scammed🤷♀️
