  • President Vladimir Putin said on Friday (June 14) that Russia would cease fire and enter peace talks if Ukraine dropped its NATO ambitions and withdrew its forces from four Ukrainian regions claimed by Moscow.

On the eve of a peace conference in Switzerland to which Russia has not been invited, Putin set out a series of conditions wholly at odds with the terms demanded by Ukraine.

They have no other choice if they want to save what they have!
They should have accepted Russia's peace offer two years ago: ceding Crimea, more autonomy for Donbass and not joining NATO. That would have cost Ukraine nothing in practice - but now that Russia has had to sacrifice so much to counter the western threat, the price is of course much higher.
      Tough luck, Ukros!

That area Putin is referring to does not want to be part of Ukraine . After the coup where this regime took power from an elected government in 2014 those regions had a referendum to be independent . Or the land they stole from Georgia. or what they're trying with Moldova.Ukrainians rejected Putins ceasefire agreement and even scarthed at the nato members who suggested that maybe Ukraine should accept it. Having ya biggest threat (China) strongest (Russia) destroy themselves is a benefit but Russia isn't a threat to the US if the war ends today, or if it ends 10 years from now .

@@kareneravn2443 You're making it a little more black and white than it really was though.
I am not denying Russia violation of the Budapest memorandum...
But the corruption in Ukraine goes much further back than 2014, and the west and NATO are not innocent in constantly inciting further tension in this region.
I am not absolving Russia of their aggression (nor their obvious agenda)... But suggesting that Russia = bad, NATO forces = Good, Ukraine = innocent is extremely reductive history.
Its the tired and old story... The wealthy elites of either side of the conflict continually took advantages and personal concessions regarding Ukraine's state in the world, trying to undermine the other side (NATO and Russia both guilty of such) until actual live conflict broke out.... at which point, the citizens suffer for the wars of the elite. Russia's goals are territory and land they perceive as originally Russia... While the west wants to milk the tipping point in the conflict at the cost of the citizens tax money for further redistribution of wealth to the wealthy (and at the cost of the Ukrainian populace).

In 2014, the Ukraine-Russia war ended in a similar fashion with a similar ceasefire agreement. Back then, Russia took over Crimea. Now, in 2022, Russia attacked Ukraine again to take over more regions, specifically Luhansk and Donetsk. However, there are problems, even if Ukraine agrees to this ceasefire agreement. There are no guarantees that Russia will not attack Ukraine again. Additionally, this ceasefire will not mitigate the risk of World War III. If Russia is successful in taking territory in a war of attrition with a ceasefire, we could see similar conflicts arise in different parts of the world. I do believe Ukraine and Western countries want a ceasefire, but with conditions that ensure the security of Ukraine in the future. For example, Russia would have to allow Ukraine to become a part of NATO.

It's too much though. Cities of Kherson and Zaporizhia are too big for Ukraine to just give them up, not to mention other cities like Kramatorsk or Slovyansk. Though this offer might be just the upper bar in negotiations. Russia might agree for example to let Ukraine keep the territories it currently has and I think that would be a good peace deal for Ukraine

A key requirement was neutrality to avoid serous geopolitical consequences. In fact, in 2022 they nearly agreed to it in return for Russian withdrawal, but were talked out of it by the West in pursuit of their own goals which have little to do with Ukraine’s well-being.

Not a great Idea considering Russia's past in breaking ceasefires and agreements. He's basically asking for another 15% on top of the 17% he barely holds. The bid for Ukraine not to join NATO on top of the land grab tells me he has not abandoned his plans for Ukriane but things are not going as planned with the "3-day SMO". After building up his army over the next 10-years he would surely invade again. That is his nature, he wants to rebuild the USSR and place himself on top like some kind of Tsar.
