  • A restored cut from the 1965 LP, "The Rafters Ring at the Abbey Tavern", featuring Anne Byrne and Jesse Owens in a live performance of "Buachaill o'n Eirne" aka "The Boy from the Erne". Jesse Owens and Anne Byrne were regular performers at the Abbey Tavern in the mid to late 1960's.
Owens and Byrne deliver a wonderful duet performance of this song in the gaelic, delivered as something of a love song but containing some of the oddest and most obtuse lyrics, such as "A's n m liom do phg n'n bhrg atim ag caitheamh le bliain" which apparently translated means, "And your kiss is no more to me now than a shoe worn for a year".
This video includes photos from the album cover, along with images from an unrelated Anne Byrne and Jesse Owens performance.

Outstanding song and great voices. Have we lost something ? Where are the great young voices of to-day and why are they not performing these songs of Ireland.

Agreed. It is unfortunate that these traditional songs and soaring voices are no longer in vogue.

There are fine young singers every year at the Oireachtas. For example, Conchubhar Ó Luasa…

Many younger generations have forgotten (if they ever knew) that we are the song-carriers. 'Tis not about us as singers, but about how we carry the song to the next generation, and how we feel the ancestors behind us.

I'm old enough to remember when this beautiful ballad was a "hit" in Ireland. Sadly our national radio station never play these ballads now days. Only for T.G.4 it's possible a lot of our Tradional ballads would never be heard of again. That God for CZcams.
